Rebuilding The Last of Us Part I: A deep dive into combat, animation, audio and visual changes with Naughty Dog

Have it already bought and installed on my PS5

But from my experience with the game (finished it 5 times or so on PS3 and PS4), and from what I've seen, apart from some animations and AI improvements, gameplay is unchanged

And seems like they added few animations. It's not comparable to Part II by a LONG margin.

I've watched 1 hour or so of leaked footage, and animations during gameplay are 99% the same.

Going from Part II to Part I will be jarring af because of this. I consider Part II to be a masterpiece visually, and what really makes it stand out are the animations.

Old animations + no upgrades in gameplay (no prone or dodge) will make it inferior to Part II from day one.

They should have added more animations and prone/dodge to make it more modern and a smoother transition to Part II. There's no excuse, really.

Same thing, because he then says that they bring on the ramake all the tools they learned from it...except the 2 most game changing features like going prone and the dodge.

Monumental my ass.

Seeing how much they improved IA and gore\animations is the only reason why i'm buying this remake.
They are talking about development tools, that's how I understand it. They aren't changing the gameplay so to speak but using the new tools they have learned from Uncharted 4 to TLOU 2 and remaking the gameplay. The AI tools make the AI better, Animation tools makes the animation better, etc.

And does that sound "monumental" to you?

Especially when they specifically talk about melee combat where the only big change worth mention is the dogde mechanic that is not in the remake.

You are monumentally wrong.

Yes, to me, there are over 10 years' worth of tools and learnings since the original game came out on PS3. We have experienced these new tools on PS4 games in the form of Uncharted 4 and TLOU 2, but it is a monumental shift going from the original to the remake. The way I look at it is they are bringing the old game up to the standard of the new game using the tools and knowledge amassed over 10 years being faithful to the core design and gameplay loop. I originally thought the remake will include some mechanics from Part 2 but then I also thought they would redesign some of the levels to be able to make use of it. TLOU Part 2 levels are very open ended, more vertical and bigger than TLOU 1 and the story is tied to the level design so changing those would mean changing the story which they clearly don't want to do.

Trying so hard to justify that unjustifiable $70 price because they know well this will be a very fast price nose dive just few months after release.
All Sony games drop in price after a few months. I bought Demon's Souls remake for $70 (never again), and it dropped to $40 within a few months.

Oh cmon...literally no one would have said anything if the combat scenario areas were bigger to adapt dodge and prone, they are just combat scenarios, they can make start a cutscene where you want without losing any drama or effect, after all the experience they had in the last 10 years (like you said), you can make them twice bigger and everyone would have praised the level design like they did with tlou2, nobody is gonna care if they start a cutscene in a different room or alley, this is a weak excuse, this is the same shit as joel can't dodge because he is an old man excuse (but he can still fuck up a small army of men without a sweat), the whole remake smell of low budget\laziness when your devs can't even enlarge some areas from a 10 years old game...

Some changed animations and better ia are not gonna make the melee combat monumentally better, cmon, the ia doens't even come to play when you are at melee distance dude, you just bash the button to bash the heads, joel soft-lock on the target and that's it, no dodge or anything, sorry but we are rewriting the english language if this is what you consider a monumental upgrade, it is not even a noticeable one, let alone monumental.

Yeah but this one will probably be faster than other titles as it is clear it is a minimal work sold at a high price so they’ll drop the price fast because they are stilling getting a high profit margin as the original selling price is ridiculous compared to the budget.

God of War Ragnarok and this garbage asking the same price… I would be pissed honestly if I worked at SSM.

Looks like a year and seven months would be the first opportunity at that price point.

I did the same , got GOW at 15 or less , needed to wait like 2 years. Its great since is a single player game with no Dlcs so nothing multiplayer you can miss but the main constrain is keep spoiler free those 2 years, its difficult since a lot of people thinks you played it specially after 2 years of release.

I finished TLOU several times will wait when they give it for free on PS extra, could take 2-3 years

Good, I like when they drop prices fast and despise Nintendo for rarely ever dropping prices. If you don't want to pay full price like me, just wait a few months when the price drops.

It is clearly not a minimal work; Porting Spiderman from PS5 to PC was minimal work and took less than a year with much less workers. TLOU remake has been in dev since 2019 from reports and involved multiple studios at different stages. That is not minimal effort. I wish it was a $20 upgrade for those who already own the original but I'm not mad about that because I enjoyed playing the first remaster on PS4 though I didn't finish it.

Why? the developers do not set price, Sony does.

Or it is not worth it but they still buy it anyway because they get trapped by the hype machine.

Lol, what hype machine? Discourse surrounding this game has been negative overall. If people decide to buy it, it's because ND/Sony successfully demonstrated why this game is worth $70 price tag in some way or another. Same as every other game.

A lot of people here on Neogaf would make horrible business men. They have no clue how the real world works or what the purpose is of Social Media when it comes to marketing lol. It's quite hilarious.
I think that everyone understand a simple concept like hyping something on social media, it is not rocket science for elites dude, but for many of us it doens't make what they say less hilarious.

those threads full of local gamedev experts writing essays on how it looks worse than the original on PS3 will be a fun read next week
I just find it so annoying that people pretend to be perplexed by this release. They’re releasing it for the PC. Can you imagine if they released the PS4 remaster version with those dozens of hours of pre-rendered .mov vídeos instead of these jaw-dropping real-time cutscenes that they’ve built? PC gamers would go apeshit with upscaled video files for cutscenes.

The leap in cinematic fidelity is constantly downplayed, but I think it's much more important for this type of game than others because of it's narrative focus. Great example is this cutscene (timestampped); I don't ever recall finding the dialogue exchange here nearly as funny/charming as I do now and that is because the animation and fidelity really brings it all to a new level of vitality and believability.

I feel this game will blow up in a way the first and second never did due to timing. This is the perfect way to introduce this game to a larger audience, especially with the HBO series coming.

Really? Could be right, still it's still a big upgrade feels like it's being played down too much IMO.
The thing is, tlou1 melee animations on ps3 are still better than 95% of melee animation in similar modern games, so even if the change is small they are still gonna look super modern.

I mean look at the melee animations in days gone...

Motion matching is a tech that pick the right animation for any given moment from a archive of animations, so better chained animations basically and less awkward moments.

Nah.

It's a PS5 exclusive, and the PS5 doesn't have a huge install base like the PS4. It cant sell like 10M copies.

Will sell pretty great on PC tho, when it eventually comes out

"The same" animations...sure.

Original:

Remake:

It's more like "the same" as TLOU2 you mean? Cause...i swear some of you guys forget how the first game wasn't nearly as fluid in terms of animations, lmao.
They have an agenda to push. They will go for any straw-man argument and find something until it sticks.

$70?
Same animations?
Built from the ground up?
No Crawling?
Abby?
Woke?

The list goes on and on.

As I said in another topic, after so many excuses why this game shouldn't exist I can't imagine how things are going to go if this game has great debuts all over the world in a week. Can't wait to look at all.the excuses

If this tri-release has soft sales on PS5, will the PC release launch at $70? A $60 PC release with a good PC feature set will be a better pill to swallow than what PS5 players are willing to pay for. 🤞

Considering that Sony underestimated the demand for the Firefly Edition and is trying so hard to have more in time for the game's debut, i really don't think we'll have to worry about "soft sales" happening on the PS5.

Cant wait to replay this. But still cant stop feeling like they missed a trick by not remaking uncharted 1-3 instead as they are more dated.

If they added prone They would have to redesign all the layouts. That’s was not their goal for this. That is not tlou. It would be a different game. Don’t know why this is so hard to understand.

I dont buy it

What layouts? You can crouch already, so why no prone? So you can enter some places where you shouldnt go? Put some invisible walls

What's their excuse for not putting dodge in then? Map layout?

"Thats not tlou". Those are features present on the sequel, ffs.

They just didnt bother because they would have to put some work into it. Simple as that.

Dodge button would mean more animations to Joel and enemies

They are charging premium for what should be the deffinitive edition of their magnum opus, but they couldnt bother to put features that would elevate the game

Whats clearly happening here is: ND got this project after a failed attempt at remastering it from another Sony studio. They had to save the project with limited budget and time to recoup the investment already made developing it, and this is what we got.

I doubt that they are happy with it, but fuck it, Sony is forcing their hands, so they sand "lets ship this shit"

Crouch is not prone, where the player can see under objects. Tell where that exist in tlou. Then you have add the in the Ai search functions all the animations to support that. And yes background layout that what’s it called it would all have to be changed to accommodate that gameplay. It’s huge job, if they added that the game probably would not be out this year and it wouldn’t be TLOU.

“ Put up some invisible walls?” BAD, crappy horrible idea, are you a gamer? You know that’s bad game design right?
