Clearly it's still this guy's fault...

Any non-warring reason for the 30% drop? Is that historically normal?
In the third year of the new console generation when the first two years were supply constrained? No. It's unprecedentedly low.

Reason? Can't be sure unless we take a deep-dive into internal data and apply numerous filters. But my best guess is that Xbox market shrank significantly from 50 million to somewhere around 35-40 million by the end of last gen.

The XBS performance so far was masked by (1) early Xbox adopters and (2) PS5 supply shortage.

Now both those factors are behind us, so we're seeing the real picture of the supply-demand. That's my best guess based on the limited amount of information we have.

My guess is people were buying the Xbox Series S due to it being the only next-gen console available in the market since it was basically impossible to get a PS5.

Sales are down now because the PS5 is readily available and the most desirable product out there for consumers wanting new-gen consoles. Xbox was always the second choice if in case there was no PS5.

Thanks for the responses everyone. MS better hope that games like Starfield, Avowed and Fable are absolute classics if they want to gain ground.
My theory is that even if Starfield is a 90 MC "must-play" game, just oozing quality, it still won't move the needle much for Xbox.

For Xbox's sake, I hope I'm wrong. But if I'm right, we can talk more about it when the time comes. No point in spreading negativity, theorizing stuff in advance.

Tbh there is no reason to have a Xbox. Even GP isn’t that big of a deal (at least for me)…. And this comes from a person heavily invested in the Xbox ecosystem. It is very hard to justify one if you can play all third parties + exclusives on Sony’s console without any major difference when it comes to visuals. MS needs ASAP the big hitters out (Starfield, Fable, ID games, etc)

We can only speculate. Posted this in the NPD thread where they also saw a drop. A drop so big that it caused the entire console tally to drop despite switch and PS5 outperforming their last year totals.

Probably because Playstation is up. With PS5 finally in stock, people are likely not impulse purchasing the xbox like they did last year.

Or just like last gen, Xbox has now already sold to its loyal fanbase and has topped out. Remember, it kept pace with Sony for the first two years last gen getting to 25-30 million really quickly before just completely dropping off limping to 50 million.

Series S was $199. The casual market MS was chasing shouldve made this the best selling console of the year. But i guess even the price conscious gamers/soccer moms/grandparents dont want to buy that console for their kids.

I wouldve thought that people wouldve bought it in droves with Starfield coming out next year and CoD going exclusive. It's really odd that XSX is already starting its downward slope 2 years into this gen.

Like i said, a lot of assumptions. We wont know for sure. Only MS (and maybe Sony and NPD) have the real data and they wont reveal their sales numbers, highly doubt they will release their internal data.

Why are people of the opinion this is bad news for a Microsoft attempting to close the Activision Blizzard deal?

Sounds like this is precisely what I would want regulators seeing.
At this point why does Microsoft even want to close the deal? Yeah, lets spend $70 billion to sell games exclusively on a platform with shrinking sales and marketshare. Brilliant strategy.

Remember, people have known for over a year that Microsoft is buying Activision, and have known for over a year that the future games will be exclusive. And Xbox is still underperforming significantly.

No console wars, but does this console EVER have any fucking good news?

It's always "wait for next year", game cancelled, sales down 300%, 900p, etc.

They've been in this thing for 20 years now ffs.
The specs were really good. It still wins its share of face/offs against the PS5 when they lost nearly 100% of all face offs last gen. They have bungled everything else.

I just heard that Coalition is only now starting dev on their next Gears title. 3 years after shipping Gears 5. In the meantime, Respawn shipped Jedi Fallen order in the same month and are coming out with a sequel next month. How MS let a studio waste 3+ years on nothing is beyond me.

If it makes you feel any better switch is still outselling xbox and playstation as well in most areas. Hard to call ms or sony a monoply with that being the case.
MS is the monopoly. Nintendo doesn't count since they apparently aren't part of that market according to regulators. Sony is the victim. I'm just glad they were able to secure FFXVI or else they would be completely crushed this year.

That's an exaggeration.

If we are talking about regulators they take steps to prevent monopolies. It doesn't mean either of the three have a monopoly but regulators ensure that none of them become one.

However looking at how they define monopolies a natural monopoly is fine. As long as that company isn't controlling the market in a way that hinders competition.
