So is this because of Steam or just general PC adoption, obviously running Windows so it helps Microsoft. But other than doubling the pain for people using directx, what has Microsoft actually done there? or does he just want to take it over and buy Valve? Valve needs to get SteamOS into Japan.

That's a completely meaningless statement without context.

Doubled in size from what to what?

Doubling, for example, from 2000 to 4000 isn't especially impressive, as 4000 pc players in a country as technologically advanced, with the history Japan has in game development, and hardware manufacturer, would be a pretty low number.

Now, if it went from a healthy 1 million to a even healthier 2 million that's quite good - after all, a million people who have gotten into pc gaming in 3 years is a respectable amount.

They went from 2 people to 4?
From other sources it's a billion dollar industry in Japan and has over 5 million active users.

Woah.. Gamechanger...!!!!

I can definitely see them reaching 115+M GamePass subs by the end of 2026 now.

Almost started to feel bad about making fun of Spencer, but good to see he has a chance of saving the industry. ♥️

Serious question, can regulators prevent the purchase of a private company and private sale?
Yes, they don't care who buys whom, only if the consumer is worse off.
Isn't Valve privately own? And does it mean that different rules apply to let's say Activision acquisition? I'm genuinely asking, I don't know...
Acquiring Valve will dramatically reduce competitiveness of PC digital game market. Microsoft stopping SteamOS development (that runs Windows executables better than Windows) would further restrict the OS market. That thing is not getting approved.

Let's hope it will never happen. Valve is an amazing company, I don't think any PC user would be in favor of them being bought by Microsoft or by whoever.

Did they give details on that growth? Maybe F2P games was a big driver?

Why not? It would add value to GamePass. I thought lots of PC-gamers were happy with GamePass?

No it wouldn't, they would still need to get publisher agreements for games to appear on gamepass in the same way that they do now. It would change nothing in that respect.

Beyond that, considering how they've handled the windows store/xbox app, I think it's safe to say nobody on steam would want them anywhere near what valve had built over the last couple of decades.

Then there's the Linux side of the equation which is a whole other tin of worms and would have implications for the steam deck.

While overall it's obvious MS buying valve would be bad for us consumers, TBH I couldn't see them doing a worse job than valve, they do almost nothing with steam these days, wtf does all their money get spent on? Yachts for Gaben?

Well, yeah, I was being sarcastic.

I wouldn't have believed you 10 years ago that PC would be a good place to play JRPGs or Japanese games in general.
It's kinda nuts!

I'm not surprised. Get a nice Fractal north case and slap awesome components in it and leave these abominations of consoles in the dust.

When PC gaming gets decoupled from Windows I'll be fully on board. I won't use that spyware! Proton is pretty great in that regard but still needs work.

Is this forum just anti xbox now lol, every thread i swear
Microsoft is a terrible company and would be just as bad as apple of given the chance.

We need to move away from all of them. Ditching windows for linux would make PC completely independent.

Right, so we can tell the Japanese PC market is growing, but it's unsure whether it's huge.

There is a general trend, but I wouldn't discount the effects of PUBG's insane success back in 2017. It might have changed the landscape.
Other countries in the region like Korea and China are basically PC Country which also contributes to a positive image.

I wonder how much it has grown when you stop counting VNs as videogames.

Alternatively: Isn't most of Japan entiring retirement now? Make sense they're bored af gonna game.

Pc gaming is held off mostly because people want to give consoles a chance the good news is things like steam deck, and I buy power help pc gaming growth.

did you just wake up from a coma and that’s why you’ve never heard about the Steam Deck? 🤔

KADOKAWA ASCII also says there were 16 million PC game users in Japan in 2021 – among a total gamer base of 55.4 million people

That’s two years ago.
