This Diablo 4 "highway effect" thing is one of the funniest copes that I've seen

I've seen some Reddit posts about it swirling around my Discord channels a while ago and thought it was just someone taking the piss but apparently, some people really believe this is true.

The gist of it is this:
you are falling asleep while playing because your only zoom options are close and closer

This apparently means that the game's FOV or whatever is what's making you drowsy, and not the fact that playing the boring-ass endgame for hours on an end will make you sleepy because of how dull it is. They've actually pulled some medical condition out of their ass to cope with the fact that Diablo 4 doesn't have any staying power and once you're done with the campaign, there's nothing to do in it. Hilarious.

Some fans are delusional.

Fov related issues absolutely can cause sickness/drowsiness. The only time it's ever happened to me was playing The Darkness 2. Great game, loved it, FOV was horrible on PC at the time and it made me sick and almost exhausted to play.

But to try and use that excuse for why you might not be enjoying D4 is a hard case of copium.

I'd say what's happened to D4 is extremely disappointing. Shouldn't be a surprise, writing has been on the wall for Blizzard for a very long time, but it still sucks if you like the genre or game in particular.

Yeah, that's true. I've had motion sickness my whole life, and taking me on a car ride if you want some company to pass the time is a terrible idea because I will be fast asleep within minutes, lol.

That being said, I've never felt any effects like that while playing Diablo 4.

"If your brain feels safe sees the same thing occurring repeatedly, at the same rate, at the same perspective it will convince you to fall asleep"

My man is literally describing being bored.
That they're describing it in such a roundabout way and then pretending like it's some kind of scientific discovery is probably the funniest thing about it.

While there is some truth to this effect, I don't think it is as pronounced in Diablo 4 as it needs to be in order to actually induce sleepiness. The game is just fucking boring.
(And it would be really embarrassing for Blizzard's designers if no one thought of this effect, that's like UX 101)

Happened to me with Wolfenstein: The New Order. Something about the FOV in that game made me feel queasy and hurt my eyes.

It's as much funny as the "I don't get the hate" crowd.

I'm part of the I get the hate but don't care because I find the game pretty fun crowd.

Explains why I literally fall asleep when reading a book, even if it's beautiful and has a good story.

In games this never happened, but I haven't played D4 for several hours in one session yet. For other reasons, though.

All my pc friends talk shit about this game. Very overrated by the reviewers it seems.
Average video game reviewer won't sit around grinding the endgame for hundreds of hours. They will just blast through the story mode (which is apparently pretty good, all things considered) and call it a day. The main problem with this game is the lack of content.

I think that if you fall asleep playing a game (except if you are really tired) is because the game is fucking boring to you and should play something else.

There's some rare cases where a game atmosphere is so chill that literally put you to sleep even if you love it, happened me few times with Master Detective on Switch. Awesome game that made me sleep at some point because of a perfect mix of chill music, rainy sounds effects and night time. Luckily Switch dropped on my face when happened, so I suddenly wake up and continued to play.

Before I had very hard time to get a good night of sleep. I could get to bed and stay awake hours and have a very bad day after.

Now I use Diablo IV every night. A good 20mn of dungeon bashing and I instantly fell to a dreamless slept, to be fully restored next morning.

Diablo IV has changed my life.

I don’t dislike Diablo 4 as much as others, but the grind to level up is way too long, and the loot is usually worse than what you have. Even the Legendaries.

I’m leaving it installed, but I’ll probably go back to Diablo 3.

And you have a boner for trying to figure me out, it seems.

It's been, like, what? Several months since I even said anything of note about this game? Fuck off.
No need to get so angry my guy. Don't get mad at me because you're easy to read. Hate on.

I don't dislike it either. It's just that this is really funny, lol.

But yeah, I actually just went back to Diablo 3 last night, and yep, maybe it's not very deep but it's still as fun as ever.

I'm not angry, I'm just telling you to piss off because you're weirdly obsessed with "reading me" for some reason. And you're not even very good at it.

Diablo 3 I triple dipped and played through it with different classes on Switch, PS4, and PC.

I recently finished Diablo 4 and just don’t have the desire to start over.

I just hope it gets better as time goes on.

Okay buddy. You're also self obsessed. Might be time to take a break. Why does it hurt you so much that this game is a big hit?

I don't care. This is just funny. Why are you so defensive about it and feel the need to accuse me of hating the game for laughing at this?

I fall asleep while playing all types of games. But that’s because I play late after long days. If I’ve played it, I’ve fallen asleep playing it.

I don't care. This is just funny. Why are you so defensive about it and feel the need to defend the game and claim that I somehow hate it for laughing at this?

Hot take: It's not just Diablo 4 that has boring moments. Too many modern Isometric ARPG games are way too long, bloated, and/or grindy and it gets quite annoying. This includes everyone's favorite, Path of Exile.

I think most Isometric ARPG devs have figured things out gameplay-wise, and the genre itself needs a big shakeup from a storytelling standpoint. The genre needs projects to entice people who normally don't play ARPGs to give them a chance, other than just being the popular 'flavor of the week' game.

Another genre, JRPGs, I barely play anymore(or play very, very selectively) has reached that same stagnation over the years, but all it takes is a bit of creative spirit to make me pay attention. Look at how Eiyuden Chronicle is making a smaller budget JRPG experience feel dynamic, cinematic, and engaging when it comes to scenarios:

I don't even know what this game is about, but it's making me actually pay attention to a genre and type of game that I'm normally not interested in. And that's the point. I just need ARPGs to spice things up a bit more instead of giving me a couple of high budget CG cutscenes and then asking me to go hit some low level rats and skeletons again.

I didn't pick up Diablo 4 nor did I even come close to thinking about it, because there was nothing I saw that was enticing from the outsider perspective. I thought fans of the I.P. would enjoy it and eventually recommend it, but they quickly turned on it after launch. As an outsider, that makes me want to not even bother at all. Something has to change.
