The people who are deeply into this "xbox tax" conspiracy are about to get a rude awakening.
It's funny how users I always had a feeling were just undercover warriors very subtly trolling OTs are really just that when big industry-shifting events happen. True colours come out.

Exposing the sinister cartel of retailers who allow companies to pay for advertising space.
It wouldn't matter to me if they did as I have a PS5 alongside my Xbox. The reason I'm struggling to believe this is because unlike SEGA, Microsoft have the financial clout to ride out this difficult period.

I think Nadella's patience has run out. Imagine spending $80 billion dollar on a large number of studio and publisher acquisitions and then being told by the author of that master plan: "Eh, about that plan to spend Sony out of business and to make Gamepass the Netflix of gaming? Welll ... ehm ... Actually we're losing more money than ever with Game Pass and Xbox consoles are cratering. We need more money or else we'll have to close many of the studios we just got."

Microsoft's gaming division as a whole is irrelevant for Microsoft. The whole thing started because MS thought the living room was an important battle ground and they were afraid Sony was going to walk away with a huge prize. Never happened. MS got into console gaming and stayed there for the wrong reasons. That's not a big issue when the division is performing well, but that's not the case. I don't think MS shareholders see any point in going on with Xbox. Either make money or close up the whole thing before it's becoming even more of a money pit.

After 22 long and hard years, the war is finally over.

MS held out the white flag and have effectively ceased their console operations, surrendering the market to Sony and Nintendo.

MS will live on in the gaming space of course, as a multiplatform publisher for the two main platform holders and PC.

The wars been over since kinect just daddy ms didn't want to let it go.

Ultimately Phil going for Activision put eyes on how much money they're losing.

If they didn't buy Bethesday and ABK this wouldn't be happening.

First I heard about this xbox tax was yesterday, what's it supposed to be referring to?

Piss poor reviews for piss poor games?

Yep, essentially boils down to how well (or not in this case) Xbox games are received, both in terms of reviews and public perception.

The delusion is that the games are great, 10/10 masterpieces in some cases, but because they are made or published by Xbox they are getting unfairly critiqued.

What they don't understand is the fact that these games are about to get exposed to a whole different level.

The issue is the Xbox fans, nobody seems to want to explain to them how this move will benefit them in any way, shape, or form. How do you explain to the loyal fans who spent alot of $ on an Xbox console to play Xbox exclusives, that those exclusives are no longer a thing, when many of those gamers now feel like they wasted $500 on Series X or $300 on a Series S now that those games are no longer exclusive? Money they now feel would have been better spent on PC or PS5. .... How do you soothe those who feel cheated and burned by Microsoft due to this move?

Yeah, I assume that's why they are sending Sarah Bond out to do the PR later this month. Having Phil do it would just be too painful.

Great. Now I can not play it on PS5 like I not play it on the Series S I bought to play it because it was a total flop. Thank god I only paid a month of game pass for it too.

They banked on Starfield being a massive success for them that would bring in millions of Game Pass subs that would play it for a long time. Then none of that happened. This is the backup plan.
Similar to their first plan, it isn't going to work.
Playstation and Nintendo gamers have better things to play than whatever contemporary Xbox Studios are publishing.

I thought this was a sure thing for years because you just don't leave that kind of money on the table if you are a publicly traded company, but then the game kind of sucked and I thought they would just eat it.

Yeah, poor deluded souls.

This thread is riddled with them.

'Starfield about to become a good game'

Lol

I can’t wait to see the performance comparison videos for the first batch of games for PS5. Also hope they port over Sunset Overdrive

With how much AAA games cost these days and Xbox Gamepass strategy, I'm not surprise one bit.

I could see Xbox having a Xbox Gamepass "Light" subscription on PlayStation with only Xbox Studios games in there while Microsoft release a cheap 249.99 digital only console/Gamepass machine.

Seriously, with games costing 200-300 millions to make these days, you can't ignore other platforms with the only hope of selling more hardware. The future is games available everywhere with each big guys having their own subscription services.

The next big story is if Nintendo will follow this trend as well. When their first party games start to cost hundred of million to make, they'll have no choice but consider other avenue to make a decent profit.

What a time for the industry!

Fucking hell and I almost bought an XBSX for this game alone. So this will only get a digital release for Playstation 5? If digital only I'm out lol.

I don't think Sony would bump up game prices to £150. People would either just flock to Nintendo or PC.

What might happen is that somebody else comes in to fill the void. Maybe Valve will have another crack with some Steam Machine or Apple enters the market. Somebody will step in to fill the void and there will be competition for Sony.
Competition is a must. Hopefully you re right and i am wrong

God damn. Phil should've been given the boot so damn long ago, instead he stayed way too long and is now taking the Xbox brand down with him. The worst thing about it was everyone keep giving him the benefit of the doubt and still blamed Mattrick. Starfield itself isn't much of a loss as it just isn't great but what it represents is insane - the end of Xbox as a competing hardware platform.

I just hope Nintendo and Sony start going at each other more directly again. Sony will probably have to if they want to keep making bigger and bigger games.

If it turns out all future Bethesda games are coming to PS5 day one, that's me never renewing gamepass ever again, literally the only reason I bought an Xbox this gen is that I thought some games wouldn't be available on my PS5

So far the only game I even bothered to finish on my xbox this gen was Starfield, and I kinda wish I hadn't bothered

what if its one of the PS+ games for November this year instead....
I don't have Playstation Plus because in the last two years I've downloaded maybe five games. I'd only get Playstation Plus Essential for a new Battlefield game or Killing Floor 3.

Playstation Plus is essentially worthless to me.

People should stop referencing data that makes me feel uncomfortable because games get ported to platforms I don't like

Xbox got rid of their division that helps getting games printed on a disc, the FTC leak shows that their mid gen refresh has no disc drive and there are reports that retailers are getting rid of their Xbox physical games or they are are not restocking them.

Whatever and however Xbox decides to do business with PlayStation it's definitely staying full digital going forward.

Sooo, do we have a list of meltdowns from the shills/evangelists? I would love to see their reactions. Imagine hearing that GP and/or ABK acquisition was the reason why MS became third party

Timdog is full of shit.
Never before have such true words been spoken on the internet.

I bet they REALLY want those 70% from each sale, not a cent less

Everything they have shown for the past two weeks shows that they are willing to make mercenary decisions for the sake of getting money or saving money consequences be damned so if I were them I too would be aiming for that 70% instead of allowing retailers to get a cut for a user base that not only stoped growing but also wasn't profitable enough to begin with.

I can’t believe jim ryan. bro is retiring with konami exclusives back on playstation, and xbox games going to playstation. What would have been next? splatoon and mario kart? metal gear back in the hands of kojima?
