Media Create Sales: Week 2, 2012 (Jan 09 - Jan 15)

About this, now I understand why Capcom doesn't expect to ship 1 million of Revelations units in Q1. They already have 6 to cover them XD

Oh, do you think this announcement could weaken quite a bit Revelations' performance not at launch, but through time? Still, this isn't a RE4 like scenario absolutely, obvious...

I was thinking this. When I heard about the RE6 announcement a few days ago I was thinking it would take some wind out of the sails (or sales LOL GET IT?) of RE:R.

I based my prediction on comgnet charts and Amazon ranks so yeah, I'm completely serious.

Is 200,000 realistic? I'm not very knowledgeable about Japanese sales but that seems awfully high for portable RE. What price is this starting at in Japan?

Are you speaking technically or graphically? Because 3DS has a lot in it's favour such as better graphics card and lower resolution makes it easier to render things, so Revelations does look as good if not better than Wii games, just at a lower resolution (even in 3D). But then 3DS also has a problem as it has to render most things in 3D to look good in 3D, i.e. not like cardboard, so a lot of polygons wasted on things that normally wouldn't matter.

Screen size and resolution will be a problem in terms of camera angle and scope. You can see this prominent in Super Mario 3D Land (where the camera is generally fairly close and the level's scope smaller as a result), in RE:R (where the camera is extremely close and aiming must be done in first person mode) but also in the PSP God of War games (where the scope is often reduced, and when it's kept, Kratos is tiiiiiny on the screen). The PSP actually had this problem a good deal. Dead Head Fred's camera is very close. Kingdom Hearts: BBS and Crisis Core as well. This is not a new problem for handhelds, of course. Metroid II is a classic example of a great game where the resolution / screen size made it had to find a good balance in this respect.

I suspect that developers will occasionally find innovative ways to deal with it. On the DS, some of the boss fights in Phantom Hourglass seemed very large in scope even though the game as a whole was very small due to the camera / level choices.

But as a whole, I think a lot of the impressive stuff done on the Wii would not be able to be replicated on a handheld, even one with all the power and shaders and RAM of the Wii. The Vita will probably have a number of games that try and I'd be really interested in seeing how they succeed, but I feel like the form factor is a limiter for sure. And so when we talk about overall look, not just specific technical requirements, that's my worry about the 3DS and all other current handhelds.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Wait for the first week numbers (RE:R) to start the damage control engine, Mr. Comgnet ;P

I was simply asking. What damage control are you talking about? Why do you call me Mr. Comgnet? Why it seems you enjoy mocking at me. Stop it. Or I'll search for you. And I'll kill you. I'm damn serious. DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME,J ACKASS?!?!?

XD

But, however, thinking just a bit more about it, it's a much different situation, IMHO

RE4 Mess:

1) PS2 version announced in November 2004, just two months before the release of the Gamecube version
2) Gamecube already completely dead, basically, since it did something like only 600k in the whole 2004 in Japan, just saying
3) PS2 instead the most sold console worldwide, by a monstrous margin

RE:Revelations situation

1) RE6 announced a week before Japanese / European release, two weeks before american one
2) 3DS absolutely on fire, especially in Japan
And the most important reason
3) It's not the same game XD
It's a main RE for effort spent in developing it, treated in a very good way by Capcom.

You can choose First Person or Third Person mode in the options menu, just like Mercenaries.

My japanese is horrible T_T

Heroes Fantasia? (regular version) on sale!

If I write "Rhythm Thief R sell through 50%" you would feel that somehow it was selling.

Unfortunately, if we put that into real sales numbers it sold one copy.

there were two shops where the sell through rate of new software was 0%,

Thus in this sour situation, the stores that received shipments and are selling Heroes Fantasia? among this weeks new software is a breath of fresh air (= i have no clue what the last part of the sentence says)

anywho, at each store there is only a single copy!

Mercenaries 3D did over 100k right? That was a cheap cash-in released when the 3DS was selling badly.

Expecting RE:R (a serious effort with all new content) to not even sell twice as much as mercenaries seems absolutely crazy to me.

Something like that happened on Wii with Tales of Symphonia:Intern Edition and Tales of Graces, where the latter was a proper mainline game that struggled to reach the sales of the crappy spin-off. One bad game can salt the earth for everything that comes after it.

I'm not saying this will be the case with RE:R, though.

I don't know if it's just a bug on my end but the "jump to new post" button isn't working with this thread. Seems to be working fine with other threads.

Anyone else having this issue?

The thing is, despite its cheap cash-in status, I don't think Mercenaries was badly received at all. Plus RE:R has a pretty good demo too, which should help convince some people it's nothing like Mercs.

Mercenaries is alright when you know what you're in for, so I mostly agree with you. It was just so terribly overpriced that it still left a bad taste in my mouth.

So hey guys. A few days ago I mentioned my bars-as-lines thing and used a DS first vs third party image as example. It didn't take me long to realize that could go beyond the example phase pretty easily; since those are two things I have super groups for, why not just generalize it so it would do the same for any one-to-several groups? So I did.

Here are a bunch of examples. So many because I'm doing my own testing now, and pasting pretty much all. DS vs 3DS first party through 46 weeks DS vs 3DS first party through end of first explosive holiday Third party through 46 weeks, DS vs 3DS vs PSP All known PS2 and DS software Monster Hunter, split by hardware manufacturer Paper Mario vs Mario & Luigi Everything Dragon Quest vs Everything Final Fantasy, at least PS2/GBA to present (The few crossovers get a bar in each color) Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney 2D vs 3D Mario platformers Wii series: Sports vs Fit vs Play Wario Ware vs Wario non-Ware Western battle: Grand Theft Auto vs Call of Duty

"完売" is "sold out" not "on sale", so what he's saying is pretty much: While other new releases barely sold, Heroes Fantasia (Regular Edition) is sold out at every store that got a shipment, which is cool and all... But each shop only received a single copy of it to begin with.

And an additional, partial translation:

そんな中でも一応売れた順に書いていくと…

■ ヒーローズファンタジア (通常版)
■ ヒーローズファンタジア (限定版) リミテッドエディション
■ リズム怪盗R 皇帝ナポレオンの遺産 特典:『リズム怪盗R』スペシャル・セレクションCD 付き
■ ラビリンスの彼方

こんな感じです。
[...]
For now, let me give you a tentative sales ranking of [the new releases]:

- Heroes Fantasia (Regular Edition)
- Heroes Fantasia (Limited Edition)
- Rhythm Thief R (Special, with CD)
- Beyond the Labyrinth

That's how it feels.
Poor Labyrinth.

Eh, considering all you've said so far, it just seems your area is basically Monster Hunter town.

Monster Hunter where you went to see has

1)Big shelves space
2)Invaded PSP shelves
3)It's the only game being bought, even MK and 3D Land can't do anything against it

...Or it's just JAPAN as a whole Monster Hunter town, in the end XD

Thanks for your impressions, however, and I'm looking for other ones from you, even again this week, but especially next week, when Revelations comes! :D

better clarify (i think i'll start noting the location going forward) - yesterday i saw people buying Monster Hunter in Akihabara. :)

Obviously - this is all anecdotal as i'm not going to spend more than a couple of minutes rubber necking to see what people are playing.

I did see one lol moment that i guess i can share as i think it'd be a long stretch to say i'm Vita trolling: Two japanese guys were discussing which model vita to get, wallet out - and which game to go with it. There were edging towards the Wifi. Then one of them just throws up his arms, lets out a "ma... iiii ya" or something similar, reaches over to the monster hunter stack, picks up a copy. His friend follows, and then they both go and line up. This is softmap which has the monster hunter copies stacked just in eye shot next to the Vita display. lol. It seriously has to be something to think of if you already invested in a 3DS and you have a game with X trillion hours to pass you buy instead of an expensive new platform.

will do - i'm all over Revelations, demo was :O , 3D really adds to the experience and Capcom as usual leading the way when they decide to push a machine. There's displays already going up. Tokyo is blizzard hit today, but i'm planning a run out so i'll update twitter (@dcharliejp - anyone feel free to nab pics and post them here)

It's a main RE for effort spent in developing it, treated in a very good way by Capcom.

We all know each other pretty well and we know what will happen when/if RE:R underperforms. First the excuses:

- RE6 announcement killed potential sales.
- It's a handheld RE.
- People still buying the trioDS (MonHun, 3D Land and MK7).
- RE never sells on a Nintendo system.
- It wasn't a full-fledged RE.
- 3DS small userbase/not enough action/adventure fans on the system/the hardcore leaving the system (wait, I got something confused here...)

Then trying to spin the numbers/results:

- It sold better first week than (depending on numbers): RE5: Gold Edition, RE5 360 version, RE4 Wii version, RE Wii version, RE Zero Wii version...
- It sold better first week than (depending on numbers): other 3DS third-party titles.
- Circle Pad version sold out at Amazon!

And finally, the ultimate spin:

- It sold better than RE Mercenaries 3D, RE DS... and RE Gaiden!!! BEST RESULT FOR A RE HANDHELD EVAHHHH111!!!unouno!!!one11!!!!oneuno!!!!

half j/k

I call you Mr. Comgnet because you are the one who's always posting the Comgnet charts. And I don't think you can find me but I'll give you a hint: next weekend I'll be in Milano so you can pay me a visit if you want! ;D

haha, ouch.

you know, i've got a whole bunch of reasons and theories as to what will happen with the Vita and how it will end up being fine but as loathed as i am to admit it the simplest most obvious route -this time- is simply to go to Capcom and fund a Vita exclusive Monster Hunter and start making noise about it NOW along with MH3P HD to tide people over (G if you can, or built in adhoc party)

Everything else hinges on maybe's and "well, it'll pick up eventually..." but MH is clearly right now a license to print oodles of cash.

However, i'm starting to get the feeling that Capcom and Nintendo are in cohoots now to make sure that Monster Hunter -never- loses it's popularity and given it's now primarily a handheld franchise the alligning with Nintendo has massive benefits for both parties and makes sense.

So maybe Sony are just out and out SOL on the MH front.

Anyways....

Oh, the irony. Sonyfans "begging" for Segas support, this is priceless.

The accumulated filth of all their costs and hubris will foam up about their waists and all the techwhores and management will look up and shout "Save us!"... and Sega will look down and whisper "No."?

Or maybe... it's just business, and they'll make stuff where they'll make money? I don't *think* Sega will bear grudges.

What is that? MH3G advertised being advertised on the Vita shelf?

yup - advertising that you can play MH in 3D on the 3DS along with the Vita. lol.

This stuff happens all the time in Japan though - the X360s at my local store plays DVDs of adverts for 3DS games as well. lol.

Interesting news via Andriasang:

In other ranking news, Media Create reports that Nintendo's Spirit Camera sold 74.24% of stock, a high sell-through rate. The game placed 7th this week with 16,351 unit sales

Hmm - looks like more displays up today for Rhythm Thief and Beyond the Labyrinth.

Forgive my ignorance, i've no idea who the very homely looking girl is that they are using as a cardboard cut out advert for Rhythm Thief but i'm not sure if that's a great advert :/

Both games have a fair number of second hand copies already (4680 each the cheapest) so i'm going "hope they both bomb so i can pick them up for cheap" (i'm too busy playing something else for me to justify the purchase right now)

Not sure if they are new but the MH3G range of Monster Hunter monster figures is out and they are quite quite awesome.

Pictures in @dcharliejp - i can't post or see them from office.

Considering RE: Mercenaries 3D sold ~60,000 first week, I'll say that RE: Revelations will sell around 2x that so 124,000 in its first week.

EDIT: To be clear my earlier post was asking if 200k was realistic for the first week.

My guess/kiss of death : RE:R - 148k

Come on, don't be lazy and fill all the predictions! (or at least until the Gundam game)

[PS3] Armored Core V -
[3DS] Resident Evil Revelations -
[PSV] Tales of Innocence R -
[PSP] Mobile Suit Gundam: Mokuba no Kiseki -
[360] Armored Core V -
[PS3] The Idolmaster: Gravure 4 You! Vol. 4 -

In my opinion, RE:R will be good if it can manage 400k. It's not a mainline entry, but it has potential. I hope the demo will help and word-of-mouth as well.

Si, bello. For you I am ready to open Garaph and make educated assumptions:

-

[PS3] Armored Core V - 51'000 (based on Armored Core IV LTD with a 60% Week 1 sell-through)
[3DS] Resident Evil Revelations - 127'000 (I keep that number)
[PSV] Tales of Innocence R - 43'000 (I hope Bamco gets its money back plus some)
[PSP] Mobile Suit Gundam: Mokuba no Kiseki - 131'000 (I keep that too, Mobile Suit Gundam VS in Japan on PS3 launched pretty hard).
[360] Armored Core V - 3'500 (based on how "alive" the X360 is)
[PS3] The Idolmaster: Gravure 4 You! Vol. 4 - 7'800 (ok, I blew this one totally)

[PS3] Armored Core V - 70'000

[PSP] Mobile Suit Gundam: Mokuba no Kiseki - 140'000

I think he may have been going off the initial Idolmaster releases on 360, rather than the more recent releases or the Gravure for You subseries :p

Lol. I didn't think of that.

What people need to realize is that G4U are basically the anime blu-ray releases with a bonus PS3 disc which are interactive photo shoots with the characters. They have been selling about 16k or so consistently, and will likely continue to sell the same amount every month because they're being bought by people collecting the anime series (this is the best LE version with everything a fan would want).
