IGN’s Top 100 RPGs

They were released a whole year apart though.

My memories of the reception at the time: FF6, unrivaled masterpiece. Chrono Trigger, great, but a little too short. I even remember Nick Rox calling Chrono Trigger "disappointing" in a Bahamut Lagoon preview. CT's reputation kept growing though until it achieved master class status a few years later.

That's the way it was in my circle of friends at least, other people have told me their experiences were different. That Gamefan thing is definitely 100% true though!
I was 8 years old(1995) when my classmate in 3rd grade first introduced me to FF6. We thought FF6 was so cool how it let you have "multiplayer". We would debate all the time on who got to rent the game at the local video store that weekend(our town only had 1 friggen copy). We liked CT, but it just wasn't as good in our eyes as FF6 was.

a couple years later he ended up buying the copy of FF6 we used to rent because he had this masterfile going and didn't want anyone to delete it(huge problem we used to have) and I ended getting a copy of CT from funcoland's sales magazine. I can't believe we used to rent RPGs and not beg our parents to just buy it. I got in trouble one time for asking my dad what kind of nane cunt was because someone named Relm that in their file. lol.

There is so much wrong in that list but damn...

FF4 is not even brought up when people discuss what the best FFs are. And I feel like they crammed in those WRPGs in Top 10 just for the sake of having WRPGs on there.

Woah hang on there. Lots and lots of people will tell you FF4 is the best FF by far.

I have no real idea why, besides the music...but it has very vocal supporters.

World of Warcraft should easily be top 3. There probably is no other game at all more widely appreciated and played than it so consistently and by so many. Hate on it all you want, but it is fun before you hit 300 days played and its sales and activity prove it.

I don't think any of those FF games should be top 10 (or even 50). FF games do not stand the test of time particularly well. Their mechanics are simple and boring. People play them and still say they are best due to two factors: nostalgia and hype. There are other games which are far better designed and far more fun than them. They just happen to be a part of a long list of copycats that at some point become more of the same and not as special. There's simply no way that the games of olde could stand up to today's gameplay mechanics. There's a reason no one produces big budget 2d RPGs anymore. It's because those games aren't better than what we have today.

The main point I try to make is that the list of top 10 RPGs should probably come from this console generation and last generation. Before that, consoles were incapable of making gameplay that is even remotely compelling by today's standards. At least not as anything other than XBLA games and the like. I'm sure some of you will disagree with that, and a few of you may actually feel what you purport to feel, but most of you don't play old RPGs because....they suck.

Oh really?

Well how about you mention what you hold up as an example of 'compelling modern standards' and I'll see if I can beat it with an older game?

Pretty bold statements there.

Wow, did you really say old rpgs suck? Graphics are not the only important thing about rpgs. A game like FF6 got me emotionally more involved than any rpg released this gen.

Btw, didn't know FF4 had such a following but still, discussions are dominated by FF6-FF10 and everything inbetween.

Well, they are not gonna please everybody with a list like this (or anybody in this case lol).

I personally can't even take it seriously

Shitty list overall, the top ten was pretty predictable. Ofcourse I disagree with most of it, but interesting nonetheless. Awesome to know I've played nearly every RPG of note!

EDIT: Didnt notice the lack of nocturne... holy shit. Thats offensive.

I'll never understand the hard on IGN has for Fallout 3. I tried finishing it on 3 different systems and never could. Terrible combat, looks like garbage, awful level design and by the numbers writing.

Some notable omissions:

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Radiant Historia
Dragon Quest 3 & 4
Anything from the Quest for Glory series

These guys aren't the biggest fans of the Dragon quest series and it show. It doesn't really surprise me that they picked DQ VII & VIII which are some of the longest jrpg ever made and V with that storyline which follow a hero over 30 years. DQ III should of been part of that list, especially since the gameboy color review from IGN was incredibly enthusiastic (although it's from 11 years ago by a guy who surely doesn't work there) . If FF IV is there, DQ III should be there as well since it was a huge step forward for the series (class system which eventually inspired squaresoft, day/night cycle, etc) .

Please tell me you are still in high school or under 20 years old.

If not, explain this drivel.

Its not nearly overrated as Xenoblade is, probably due in part to the "i have it and you dont!" effect of that game's localization

Chrono Trigger really wasnt that popular at release anyway
yeah Look at my avatar" assume I am going to get mad with such comment" yeah Chrono Tigger still overrated it.. well played... ;)

2D RPGs are still popular and the mechanics of a Final Fantasy, Pokemon or Tales game still stand up with modern RPGs. Their simplicity is why new players buy games like Pokemon and Final Fantasy re-releases by the millions. Simplcity isn't a negative and modern current and last generation RPGS aren't too mechanically different than their PS1/SNES/NES counterparts.

This guy sounds like a current activision or EA marketing executive.

it is a nonsense to put toghere WRPG and JRPG ..... They have almost nothing in common.

It is just a list to make people angry => to get clicks

Is this list based on how good the game is? or the impact a game had regardless of how it stands currently because if it's the first other pokemon games have already outclassed them.

"The Top 100 RPGs of All Time list celebrates the games that we believe most accurately exemplify the tenants of the role-playing game genre: building characters based on experience earned in the game, scaling combat based on the statistics of weapons, armor and abilities, making decisions - good or bad - that impact the game world."

2+2=5

The Amiga Brotherhood
Place 82 for Might & magic vi? Are they kidding? And where is heroes of might & magic III?
Other than those... Still a really bad chart.

10 - Fallout 3
9 - Mass Effect 1

8 - World of Warcraft
7 - The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
6 - Diablo 2
5 - Final Fantasy IV
4 - Pokemon Red/Blue
3 - Baldur's Gate 2
2 - Chrono Trigger
1 - Final Fantasy VI

I'm alright with everything minus 9 & 10. It wouldn't be my top ten but it's reasonable.
