"GTFO: A Film About Women in Gaming" on Kickstarter

I kind of agree with you, but at the same time I wonder if fresh eyes might provide a different take on this instead of just rehashing the same tired arguments that are repeated ad nauseam.

That's my thought, I'd rather see someone with some actual investigative journalism cred do this instead of some 'gamer'.

Well I sure hope so. I just worry about her ability to convey nuanced analyses due to her prior lack of interest in the industry.

Geeze, seems so easy nowadays to create a kickstarter and get funding.

It was never that hard as long as you could get the audience while they were paying attention. At least in the case of this documentary and in spite of being 'casual' she has tracked down more than one voice to put on film. I just hope that in post production she's able to properly credit the contributors and mark her research so those interested in the topic can follow up and broaden their knowledge.

I'm much more interested in projects that look to analyze the roots of the sexism in gaming and/or provide possible solutions than projects that seek to expose something that is already out in the open. I'm tired of so much attention being given to the creeps and losers.

I'm not opposed to this project or anything. Just not something I'm interested in.

While I feel Sarkeesian has almost no valid points, this is certainly more interesting because it deals with real life work place ethics rather than the subtle suggestion of censorship.

Sounds... okay? I mean, at least she's not "pay me to play games as 'research' and make simple youtube videos that I created before without a kickstarter".

But I feel like this would probably do better if it came sooner given the recent drama from that one woman whose name escapes me right now.

If Reddit finds about this, expect the donations to far exceed 20k
Wasn't Reddit against the other one?

Where is the documentary about no gay leads/characters? Why is it always straight males/females? Some bullshit. I am gonna start a kickstarter about that.

sick of women being treated like crap, or sick of hearing about it?

I'm sick of hearing about it

It's gotta change, but the way the whole gaming industry acts around this is lame. Please don't think I'm saying everyone should shut up and stop talking about it, but when there's a stupid kotaku article or something every week and then we have Santa Monica changing a trophy and stupid crap... it just rustles my jimmies

I long for the day that women are treated like human beings in the industry more commonly, there's not such a social stigma around girls who like video games (not 'girl gamers', just girls who play or like games, which shouldn't be surprising to anyone anymore. Hell, as a random example, I and other bigger gaming LP'ers on YouTube can attest that our viewership is a higher percentage women than men), and that we can stop hearing about it/having people cash in on it all the time.

It's a serious issue, but I feel this has to be solved more directly than this sort of going-around-in-circles mentality that seems to be going on about it.

So instead of Confirmation Bias: The Series she want to make Confirmation Bias: The Documentary.

I wish I wasn't so cynical about this because it's a legitimate problem, but I doubt any real research will go into it and a bunch of spurious claims will be made, like with Sarkisian. Now if they wanted to look inward at the gaming industry that might be interesting, but more expensive.

Exactly. People over blow so many things as
sexism now that the word has lost its meaning and now its just going to be one big joke or groan for a while.

Great job games journalism, instead of actually examining the mistreatment in the industry you take smarmy shots at Dragons Crown and pretend that an achievement name is going to cause some guy think all women are bitches.

You don't have to donate anything, just work to make the videogame subculture not a shitty place.

Like Kotaku did with their tryhard bullshit over Dragon's Crown? Or Polygon with their pushing a false narrative over Mojang and "strippers" at their GDC party?

Stuff like that is why there's fatigue.

What a load of shit.

If she really believed in what she's doing, she'd do it without the KS money... Disgusting.

My biggest issue is that changes never get proposed. It's all "LOOK AT WOMEN GETTING TRASHED IN GAMING", and after the billionth article, we need to start sitting down and finding solutions.

What this is becoming is old hat. It's nothing more than an issue with no solution, that people are eventually going to get tired of. Imagine coming on NeoGaf and having only one thing to talk about.

Eventually, it's going to suck.

Right. That's why I like the idea of getting outside perspectives on this. Otherwise, it's the same voices raising the same concerns, facing the same rebuttals, employing the same rhetoric in the same stalemate that is never resolved to anyone's satisfaction.

But the fact remains that this is a real problem, and it's time that the non-gaming public know about it.
Why? What exactly are people who don't play games going to be able to do about it? It seems to me she should be pitching the project to gamers, developers and platform holders.

Maybe there needs to be a smarter feedback/encouragement and punishment system in place.

I'm glad someone called Kamitani out on his bullshit. I like Vanillaware but there are legit reasons to object to those character designs. Beyond that, he doubled down on it with homophobia. The article has legitimate reason to exist and people should be aware as to what is wrong with those character designs.

I don't know a damn thing about the Mojang GDC party, so I won't comment.

Homophobia? lol.

The perspective of a previously uninformed and biased person can only contribute to the pile instead of making her own fresh take.

But this isn't an issue that can be solved directly. It requires social change, and that only happens through awareness and education which takes time.

Yeah, Kamitani basically accused the kotaku writer of being gay. Thats fucked up and not funny.

No he didn't.

He made that picture as a way of joking way of saying "well, now we have handsome boys as well".

The intention was never to call the Kotaku guy gay. At all.

His article said Kamitani was 14 years old and he probably felt offended about it, I know that his response wasn't the correct choice but I don't see it as homophobic, it was just a joke. He can design the characters however he wants, the game looks beautiful and everyone is making a huge deal over a single character design.

Then he said the Sorceress was pandering to Lolicons and everyone laughed, haha Kotaku

Title seems somewhat loaded, but I'm not getting the Anita/Susan vibe from it just yet.

Still not going to touch Kickstarter with a 10-foot pole after the whole Susan episode.

I'm not entirely convinced of that. I think people within the industry are burdened by biases and baggage, and everything eventually becomes a big territorial pissing match. Someone from the outside, though, has the opportunity to introduce something new--and what that is, I don't know--that isn't just self-interested bullshit from people who feel threatened or marginalized, depending on their stance.

Kickstarter is so lame. It had potential to be cool. But now it's just a simple cash grab for lazy people. Go broke and shop your movie like the rest of the world.

A homophobic joke is still a homophobic joke. It isn't funny and Kamitani was wrong, he apologized so that kind of seals it.

Kamitani implied he would prefer these buff dudes; thats accusing him of being gay. I'm sorry you can't see blatant homophobia.

Me neither, but aiming for one side just seems not that investigative. I hope she proves me wrong, but as others have said, that loaded title is telling.
