Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

So basically, almost everything bad is confirmed if I'm reading this correctly. Some stuff is even worse than previously thought.

No wonder they cancelled round tables and 1 on 1 interviews for E3. Scheduling conflicts for meetings that have been set up weeks if not months in advance, during the week of the biggest industry event of the year? Hard to believe, tbh.

Nice they finally got around to clarifying some of their policies. They should have just owned their new direction, would have stopped weeks of negative and loud speculation.

Too bad they decided to do these though, as this is completely unreasonable for me. I won't be supporting them going forward, it's been fun MS.

Give your family access to your entire games library anytime, anywhere: Xbox One will enable new forms of access for families. Up to ten members of your family can log in and play from your shared games library on any Xbox One. Just like today, a family member can play your copy of Forza Motorsport at a friend’s house. Only now, they will see not just Forza, but all of your shared games. You can always play your games, and any one of your family members can be playing from your shared library at a given time.

This sounds like Amazon Prime + PS3 game sharing on steroids.

Thanks for the clarification.

I still will not be getting one. I need to be able to completely own my games, and not have my games be held hostage to an authentication server that won't exist in ten years.

Dear Sony:

In about two sentences at your E3 presentation, you can assure that you have every single dime I spend on gaming for this new generation.

Just say the magic words.

Really does not sound awful?

That shared game bullet point seems kind of crazy. If my understanding is correct, i can basically buy Halo 5 or Shenmue 3(lulz), and share the games up to 10 people on my friendlist? So they won't have to buy the game at all right? And i could access their games and vice versa?

Edit: Ah, its limited to family members...

Only two people at a time can play them, you and one other. So your 10 "family members" would have to work out a schedule so that they could play them.

Assuming the publisher allows it, of course.

You can access them for one hour. Wouldn't you need to download and install the game first?

According to Microsoft, you should be able to start playing games you are downloading immediately.

I wonder why they don't let users go into an "offline mode" like Steam, where they would preemptively disable the transfer of any game licenses that the owner owns until the next time they log in to Xbox Live.

I will never buy a console that has limitations like these.

Now we can safely stop the whole "it wasn't confirmed, you're just being pessimistic" arguments. This is the reality of the Xbox One.

What a convoluted setup. Confusion will prevail.

Haaaaaa hahahaha.

I won't defend the rest of the stuff but voice search with Kinect is pretty quick. Instead of searching for a game on my HDD I just search for it and find it within seconds. The only really lag is switching between services when you find what you're after (eg, search for music, find it but the player takes 10 seconds to load) but that shouldn't be an issue with xbone.

Can someone clarify this for me.

If I own multiple consoles. All the additional consoles require a 1 hour online check, or would it still count as mine if originally installed with my account details?

What about replacements if something goes wrong with the system?

What a cluster fuck of hurdles and rules and variables and exceptions.

They took PC gaming and made it worse in every way imaginable.

I'm completely out.

Give your games to friends: Xbox One is designed so game publishers can enable you to give your disc-based games to your friends. There are no fees charged as part of these transfers. There are two requirements: you can only give them to people who have been on your friends list for at least 30 days and each game can only be given once.
Why would any publisher opt into this?

So you can have ten people total in your family/friends. Interesting - going to be a lot of adding and deleting people all the time. No transfer of a game (only once) unless someone has been on your friends list for 30 days.

So here is a great scenario. Hey, can I borrow that TitanFall game? Sure, let me put you on my friends list and come back and see me in thirty days.

That's realistic.

Some of those quirks actually don't sound too bad, but in the end it requires that daily check in (and now it's clear even digital copies aren't exempt due to their features) and doesn't allow you to freely resell games it seems. Hell, in some ways it could be more restrictive with publishers that just don't allow the trade ins period, though I guess those publishers would just throw a code in with PS4 copies anyway if the PS4 doesn't have anything like this set up.

With Xbox One you can game offline for up to 24 hours on your primary console, or one hour if you are logged on to a separate console accessing your library. Offline gaming is not possible after these prescribed times until you re-establish a connection, but you can still watch live TV and enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies.
So about what we expected

Isn't COD's biggest audience college students? Why the fuck would you cross-out such a big audience, when a lot of dorms have bullshit internet...or none at all?

I don't understand how it is better than we thought. It seems like a restatement of the shit Phil Harrison tripped over a few weeks ago with one exception-- sounds like there will be a limited lending feature but not at launch (no time commitment given). No private sales, and potentially no used game sales depending on publisher.

Yeah. This is as bad as we thought, or worse.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Theyre going to have to show the most fucking incredible exclusive to console IP's ever created to get me in on this thing any time soon as I don't care enough about Halo to give up all those consumer rights for entry.

Doesn't sound as bad as I thought it would. I'm not saying I'm in. I'm just not fully out at this moment.

•Share access to your games with everyone inside your home: Your friends and family, your guests and acquaintances get unlimited access to all of your games. Anyone can play your games on your console--regardless of whether you are logged in or their relationship to you.

This is too much.

The ability to "reauthenticate" over mobile broadband is interesting. It'd be nice if you could sync via your phone's Xbox app or something so that even if your home internet is down, you'd be ok with a cell signal

Good on MS for actually laying some of this stuff out there, even if it confirms most fears. Now it's on Sony (and publishers) to present how they're going to approach these online infrastructure issues, if at all.

This confirms much of what we thought. Still can't freely resell games to individuals. Still can't simply loan/rent discs. Still always online.

About those that say that Steam is the same... when i travel or go on holidays i can take my laptop and play every game with offline mode even if i don't have an internet connection :|

This is not nearly as bad as what people were anticipating, so color me content. Honestly, I still won't be picking up an Xbone; but hopefully this brings about less vitriol towards Microsoft.

Except that the system is ALWAYS online (24 hr period) and that used games are up to the publisher.

This is a disaster.
