Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

I firmly believe that everyone running Microsoft simply has no clue what consumers want. It shows in each and every product line, now including the Xbox line.

I'm the only one who uses my console and I have reliable internet.

I guess if my roommate ever gets an Xbox One he can play my games? I don't know, that doesn't sound terrible.

So if I go to a friend's house I need to wait several hours to download a 5-15 GB game instead of just bringing my game with me? Is this correct?

This is still bad no matter how they word it. Whoever said Gaf is a hivemind was totally wrong.

hell, a week ago Gaf was a hivemind. everyone was against MS DRM policies, flash forward to today we get the same information and everyone's okay with this.......... what?

Can't wait til Sony reveals their policy. Gonna be so much backtracking here, its gonna make your head spin.

I already stated in this thread that I won't buy PS4 if it is the same thing.

Folks, it's time you get with the times. All software except for games moved down this path many years ago. The physical "I own the software" time is over. It's only time when music stops making CD's and movies stop producing DVD's and go all 'cloud'.

Will cost come down with games in this new world? I think so. No more are the publishers stuck with agreements with retail to sell downloadable games at the same price as retail. Steam can offer sales because retail abandoned PC games. Steam just filled a hole. MS and Sony must see this and act accordingly or there will not be another generation.

Are you for fucking real ?

We designed Xbox One so game publishers can enable you to trade in your games

This wording is concerning. Instead of having publishers able to enable your ability to NOT Trade it in, it is the other way around. This points to the war on used games still being around this gen. I'm not reading this as a shift. The only thing we know is MS wont be the one adding on the fee's(Assuming there isnt a back ended fee somewhere, similar to patch fee's).

I still don't get the excuse that MS was forced into this. It seems to me, the only way any of these major companies would be forced into it, if is either of the two major platforms (Sony/MS) gave in first. Once one company gives in - THEN the other remaining company would be in a worse position to refuse. But when the publishers come to each company and say this is what we want, why would any side have to say yes to that? What are the publishers going to do if they say no? Not sell their game on a major platform, and lose half of their profits?

Plus I'm just skeptical about MS. It's suspicious that EA cancels their online pass a month before announcing their exclusive relationship with Xbox One. Seems to me, it's possible MS openly went along to both I. win favor with publishers (which will have an impact on exclusives) and II. to get a cut of the used sales they currently aren't.

am i the only one who think this really isnt that bad, i thought we would have to share to same profile if you are in a family or have two seperate account to play the same game.

I wan't intersted in an XBone anyway. If Sony goes this route, I am strongly leaning toward skipping the PS4.

Just to be specific, combining what we have on that page regarding the family thing:

1. You can indicate up to 10 accounts to be family members and thus access your library on your Xbone and any other Xbone.

2. If you or said family member access the account on a Xbone that is not your main one, it will check every 1 hour if you are online or not instead of 24 hours.

3. Family members can't play the same game at the same time when using multiple Xbones.

So, yes, you could share with a buddy, but he would have online checks every 1 hour on his console and you two can't play the same game at the same time.

Very similar to Steam, except only one family member can be online at anytime with the main account.

Everything is going as expected, claims that this is the future or inevitable. Press and devs backing it, loosing consumer features being "not that bad".

I'd be in the dick
I think the best we can hope for with Sony is that it'll be a publisher decision and they won't have DRM on the games they publish themselves

Jaffe's already coming up with strategies:

That's just as anti-consumer as what MS have implemented. Why should publishers be able to dictate when you can sell something? Especially with games, where they lose resale value the longer it is after release.

Physical games are no different from any other consumer item. First sale doctrine applies. Once I have bought something, it is mine to sell when, and to whomever, I want.

So basically, I am being told where I can sell my games I purchased and where I can buy 2nd hand games. Not only that I can only sell after a period of time that they specify...

How very kind of them.

If by some miracle I purchase this piece of crap, this kind of policy would only limit my purchase of brand new, day one games. No way I am spending 45 quid on something I may not enjoy, only to be stuck with the bloody thing for 3 months and then can only get rid of it to approved retailers with prices fixed by MS..

Sorry but its now official for me, its time for MS to fuck off out of the games industry

Sony...Your turn to talk policy.

I'm fine with everything that has been stated. It's going to be awesome having the ability to play my games from any console. The family plan seems really nice too.

I am guessing they will all have to share the same billing information.

Let's say my wife has an account that she pays for, and I have an account that I pay for. The billing info would be different in many ways. They won't allow that? Plus, that's saying you need to be a Gold subscriber for it to work which I find highly doubtful.

Honestly, sounds pretty good and some features are an improvement, like accessing your entire library logging into a friend or any "family members" playing your games. I wonder how they'll limit it to family members.

IP address, guarantee it....Otherwise the GAF game sharing would be off the chain....I am sure its up to 11 Xbox ONES on the same network can play the same games.....

However, I would love to hear further details about family sharing

So you buy a DISC GAME , play it and once you had enough of it you can´t sell it online or someone how want it at work or school? is that right?

I fear that MS and Sony are together in this matter. It's a very silly move to do this con your own.

Exactly.

It is confusing, though, that Sony already clearly stated that PS4 won't require any internet connectivity. Either (a) they where not fully accurate/true on this and will in effect (e.g. through publishers) have a similar DRM system or (b) Sony won't have a comparable DRM system. But then Microsoft would be playing a very bold game if they pull this shit off on their own.

This is pretty bad. It's just so horrendously confusing. I imagine trying to explain this to non-nerd, non-GAFer types (hell, even TO those types) and it's all coming up "hell naw".

As a player, this is bad. As a developer, this is still bad. I didn't ask for this, etc.

It is late afternoon and deep in a dense forest a father and son are out hunting deer. The pair have been out for a couple of hours now but have been unlucky thus far until they hear an almighty bang from the distance. It came from way beyond the forest and even beyond their hometown. The teary eyed boy looks shocked by the loudness of the sound and clings to his father looking up at him.
"What was that awful noise father?", the boy asks trembling. "It sounded so close but that's not possible.".
"It came from far off son.", his father explained.
"What was is it though?".
"Microsoft finally shot themselves in the foot and made sure everyone heard about it".

It'll make jackshit difference to Wii U sales as 95% of consumers will not be boycotting the console purchase, it'll settle down in a few months IMO.

What happens in 6-8 years later when the Xbox One's servers (activation servers and DRM servers) aren't online anymore? I can still play all my 10 or 20 year old games fine. Will all of my games I (potentially) buy for Xbox One just stop working? Am I going to be able to even buy more Xbox One games beyond that point due to the dumb used game restrictions and lack of activation servers?

This is a major issue that isn't even being addressed.

This is a confirmation of everything nobody wanted.

The 24 hour online check is ridiculous. This is a (likely) sub $400 mass market device with a reasonable expectation to be used as a video game console offline and online.

Can't rent games? Everything can be rented: Books, DVDs, Carpet Cleaners. This has to stop.

Third-parties can set up trade-in fees with retailers. Right now we are looking at about 50 percent credit for AAA titles traded in. This looks like it could cut that down to 40 to 35 percent. I'm guessing 'select' retailer trade-ins means no ebay, which means getting the least amount back for a 100% investment in Xbox One games.

I really can't understand these policies coming from MS. It's not like they're the worldwide market leader. It's not like there isn't any competition and consumers don't have a choice. It's like they're shooting themselves in the foot in every way possible to damage the Xbox brand and make up new rules that no one has to abide by or sign up for.

Speaking for the whole of South Africa, with rampant internet cable theft and some of the most expensive mobile bandwidth, this fucking suuuuuuuuuuucks donkey BALLS.

you only need to log in for a few minutes once a day to verify licenses ... would that be possible for you? maybe even mobile tethering?

This 24 Hour check-in 'for updates' is a PR spin and a joke ... the 360 updates itself already and no 24 Hour check in required ..
