Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

What in the actual fuck is this shit? What an unmitigated disaster Microsoft has become. This is not only the third console curse, but it's that curse on rampant steroid use.

I still don't understand why they can't just do a one-time online check at the time the game is installed. The 24-hour check seems superfluous.

Other than that, this seems like a reasonable set of policies to balance things out.

So since we have established the concept is ok with you from a consumer rights perspective as long as the value is there for you, if MS has decent sales and prices, you would be ok with this?
In my case no, as I previously posted in this thread:
Most of it seems fair to me (Steam user here), except for the checking in every 24 hours. But that small detail is enough to keep me from buying an Xbox One.
The mandatory online thing is enough my main issue.

From the #PS4NoDRM thread. No solid info, but an educated opinion.

My educated guess from talking to a bunch of people - none of whom know any specifics, but are around Sony a lot - is that if Sony has something it won't be nearly as insane as what MS just showed.

But there's little things that can cause a lot of aggravation. Microsoft is basically saying "We let publishers decide whether not you can or can't sell your games and we decide where you can do that."

Even if Sony doesn't have the other stuff but they have the above... that's not acceptable. There's an awful lot wrong with MS's policy, but the dictating what customers can and can't do with physical media that really aggravates.

Eh, you have a choice to not buy the X1 just as you have a choice to not use Steam. Being educated out in front helps you make an informed decision ahead of time. The market will reward who consumers support with sales. Choose another platform that has DRM you can handle.

The problem is that Microsoft is setting a precedent for the whole industry, and other platform holders (i.e., Sony) will follow in their trail. Just because, it's now A-okay to ban game rentals or selling used games on ebay/Amazon/Craigslist, if Xbox One still turns out to be successful.

So only one person in my family can be playing from the shared library at the same time? No thanks, my kids and I often are playing different games on different consoles in the house at the same time.

And boom another one. This thread is already graveyard. Bish is on fullspree.

I whinny my fervor lowly, for his length is not as great as those of the Hylian war stallions
I wonder how many outside of GAF/Hcore circle even know about this (or care, until it's too late).

Educate your friends and family so they don't buy it. One person can have a pretty big impact, and the facts are on your side.

So
PS4 has stronger Hardware
Has free Online Play
More Consumer friendly
More Indi Dev friendly
Will be around the same price as the xbone
Sony showed that they release many AAA exclusives the whole Generation and not like MS only in the first 4-5years.

Why should anyone buy a Xbone at the moment?

Money hatted initial sweetener exclusives, Halo, Titan, Forza etc. Luckily no where near enough for me.

Trade-in and resell your disc-based games: Today, some gamers choose to sell their old disc-based games back for cash and credit. We designed Xbox One so game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers. Microsoft does not charge a platform fee to retailers, publishers, or consumers for enabling transfer of these games.

Give your games to friends: Xbox One is designed so game publishers can enable you to give your disc-based games to your friends. There are no fees charged as part of these transfers. There are two requirements: you can only give them to people who have been on your friends list for at least 30 days and each game can only be given once.

Those saying "It will play used games" take note that these games are sold only through authorized resellers, which means mom and pop game stores are SOL. Also, it almost certainly means these publishers are getting their second dip and getting some money from used sales. Know that places like gamestop will pass this right on to the consumer, both with higher used game prices, and lower trade in values.

Looking at his history: yes, he did.

That one is not joking, shill as well.

Many of them aren't "people" as such.

It gets better when you start looking at the posting history of these accounts.

You find accounts with 40 posts that are only active to either defend Microsoft or shit on the products of one of its competitors, over years. You find people that implied XB1 hardware secret sauce right up to the reveal. Then you can start identifying the various diversionary tactics that have been designed to deflect from or counter genuine issues, and how they evolve over time. It's a dark place, and discovering it has made me a more angry poster.

Yeah. It looks like some of the corporate shills Bish alluded to is working overtime in this thread. Thankfully it looks like the mods got them.

Holy shit, you for real...

Just a couple of things about the present system.

I can trade in my games at ALL RETAILERS!

My car enables me to give my disc based game to a friend.

So please tell me why do I need MS's so called 'help' with either!

You know, while I don't actually like this policy, I appreciate that the're finally giving us straight answers and we now know definitively how it works. That's more than we can say for Sony.

any one of your family members can be playing from your shared library at a given time.

Oh man, seeing the whole gaming "press" sticking their heads collectively in Microsofts anus is a sight to behold.

At least mainstream media is shitting all over this anti-consumer box 24/7 (mostly over data mining/Kinect) - and as we all know, mainstream media can influence more consumers then the so-called gaming press, Pachter and GAF combined.

Pretty crafty of Microsoft to say it's up to the "publishers discretion" at whether to allow used games to be traded in or not.

That is 100% horseshit and we ALL know.

The average consumer won't even understand all these requirements.
Hardly anyone reads manuals.
They need the requirements plastered all over the box, or there will be lots of angry customers.

It's to check if you still own the license. If you resold you game through Gamestop, they force you to go online so they can strip the game from your account.

Slippery slope. Wonder if the Xbox One turning out to a big success means more anti-consumer crap from other companies in the future. We really are entering an age when we don't truly own what we buy.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around how they're going to determine where a player got a preowned game.

I'd really like to know how the retailers are going to transfer the license. The best theory I've come up with is they're going to input a code unique to the disc on their computer that signals Microsoft to free up the game.

They have to do something. Otherwise people could just give the game to their friends to install, instead of gifting them the game through XBL. That's what I'd do. Your friend would just install the game to his Xbox, and you wouldn't be able to play until you got the disc back. Just like how it has always worked.

The whole "You can give your games to your friend, but your friend must be your friend for 30 days first, and can only do it once" just seems silly.

I could understand if that was a requirement to transfer digital versions of games. That would make sense, as most of your Xbox Live friends are going to be from the internet but it says "disc-based" right there.

I'm probably never going to use that "feature", but I hope they explain more later.

I mentioned it before but I am happy I'll be able to play my Xbox One games without having to change discs. That's at least one positive thing that came out of this announcement.

That and the family sharing, but I won't use that either as I have my consoles all to myself.

The online check in thing makes sense to me, just because I can understand that they'd have to periodically check to see if you're still eligible to play the game you installed. 24 Hours is a little short though. 72 Hours would be way better, as that gives people a three day weekend.

Xbox One will still a day one purchase for me, but I don't blame people for not wanting to. Lots of hoops to jump through just to play your games.

I'm a little worried about not being able to play my games in the future. Hell, I still have my NES hooked up.

I don't really consider myself a vicious person, but I hope they are all permanent. I don't want to see them popping up again at E3 2014. At least make them go through the trouble of getting a new account.
