Uh.

It is now stupid easy to get GBA games on your iPhone without jailbreaking. TA has the details.

Just tried it and it is simple and very fast.

Didn't install for me- stops around 80%. Am I doing it wrong, or is this already borked?

Wait, does this work on iOS 6? Maybe I should read...

Edit- didn't work in iTunes, either.

I wouldn't be surprised if it were as early as tomorrow! Deleted it as soon as I tried it. It even lets you download ROMs directly to your phone, kind of neat, but also made me pretty nervous.

why does that make you nervous? you think Apple is going to brick your phone? and it doesn't let you download roms, if you click the little button it just inputs a google search for you. you have to actively click on something, that's where things would be of questionable legality.

Bombastic action theme tune playing throughout the entire gameplay segment? That's a bit chuckle worthy and not very fitting. :p

Reminds me of the early R6 planning stage music tbh.

My issue: ignored UK SAS, German GSG9 etc... and have 3 US teams and 1 Canadian, yet claims to offer SF teams "from around the world". I get they will probably be in an xpac but still.

Oh and no pistols? wtf.

The GBA emulator is exactly the same that was hidden in that baby names app, which means poor controls and stuttering audio. Meh.

I'm not sure, I think it's a newer version, on the baby names version Golden Sun had graphical glitches but on this one it doesn't and the audio works correctly.

What I meant by "it lets you download ROMs" is that it lets you do it all through your phone. Other emus you need to go into the root on your computer and drag and drop. With this, however, you just click download and "open with GBA4iOS". Why does it make me nervous? Just the nature of the beast, more than anything. I know Apple won't brick my phone (and I'm already jailbroken,) but just the way it installed so easily and all that is what made me uneasy.

Anyway, tried it again on my mini and it runs like absolute crap. Graphics stutter like mad, but the audio works fine. On my iPhone 4, the graphics are a little slow, but the sound stutters. It's not worth keeping around unless you want to play GBA RPGs on the road, though. Tried playing Super Mario World and it was just a big headache.

What other async games do you recommend? Or even turn based strategy for that matter? If it's free that would be a bonus as well.

I'm sure the resident TBS expert Pitta can better recommend games, but the excellent Ravenmark SOE $5 sale ends today. Free TBS games - that are worth playing - are a rare breed:) Well, there is Ravenmark Mercenaries which is an async multiplayer TBS (but I really haven't had the chance to get into it).

And no, the king of async games is Summoner Wars:)

thread going way too slow, since it was blazing when I was gone

Blame the Steam sale...

We just released an update for Swords & Arrows:

- Adding in-game hints & help (can be turned on & off in "Options").
- Adding shiny new checkboxes to the "Options"-view.
- Adding the option for you to turn off turn timeouts when playing with friends.
- Giving the game a new notification sound.
- Improving the friends-list when you invite friends for a match.
- Fixing various bugs.

Got lots of other improvements and additions in the works, so stay tuned! Also, we recently passed 1000 players (which feels like a big deal to us, at least!), so big thanks to all of my fellow NeoGAFers for trying out our game! :)

exactly my thoughts.. I have very little time for async play these days

Yeah, I completely understand (I'm usually a SP kind of guy myself in Advance Wars). We decided to focus on MP first because it works with the strengths of the platform, being able to play async online etc.
But a lot of people have been asking for a SP component, so we're definitely going to add some kind of single player later on! :)

The next big update is going to be this though:

For the ones interested, Breach&Clear is out.
It's a quarter past five. The UK store never updates at this time. I know you're talking about New Zealand. I know that it releasing in New Zealand now, means it'll be up on the UK store at midnight. It's always been this way, it'll always be this way. I've been through it hundreds of times.

With all that said, why did I immediately fire up the app store and search for the game when I read your post? Will I ever learn?

Well, as for async, after having tried almost everything, I developed hate for everything BUT the games that let you understand the tactical situation at a glance, not requiring (or not that much) previous knowledge of the situation. This let you have several games ongoing.

So right now my async life is all Lost Cities, Battle fo the Bulge (iPad only for now), Carcassonne and Sword&Arrows.

Similar to S&A there is Uniwar, with a sci fi setting.
I put a lot of time in Hero Academy too.
All have much more than meets the eye under their belts, but they all share the accessibility of Sword&Arrows.
Many love Summoners Wars, but personally I hate it (it's very well done tough...tis' just me).

A recent awesome game I haven't put the time I wanted to in it (due to my friends neglecting the title at the moment) is Ravensmark Mercenaries.
It's the free async version of the excellent Ravensmark, which should be even on sale now: an outstanding game with a super cool lore and several campaigns.
Speaking of single player TBS, remaining among the recent ones, besides the already mentioned Ravensmark there are Warhammer Quest and Hunters 2 and obviously XCOM.

There are many other TBS that I'm neglecting...I just picked up the ones I loved most/more recent/more famous.

EDIT: already beaten with several great advices.

Eh...sorry :*

But I guess inside your heart, a tiny part was hoping for a worldwide instant release.
I know I've been there.
Several times :p

Ravenmark: Mercenaries is really really good. There's a lot of strategy & planning involved because all the different mercenary companies have their own strengths and weaknesses. In my last game my opponent was purely using slow moving infantry so I flanked him hard with cavalry and those quick marsh runner ninjas. He was not able to counter my tactic so he surrendered pretty quickly.

I am going to download this and I am going to play it and I am going to hate myself for it. Why wouldn't they make it like you're running through the tunnels, you know, like a Pac-Man game? They could keep it side-scrolling like this, but just make it look like the Pac-Man tunnels. Avoid the ghosts when you see them, pick up power pellets and then eat them. It's a no-fucking-brainer. What the hell.

To be honest, as much as I love Eclipse in single player, it was my major letdown of the year so far :(
The mp implementation is really lacking IMHO (no past turns review, spotty notifications, some crashes when resuming turns) plus some mechanics (not really devs fault) are not that suited to async (like in combat).

I love Big Daddy as everyone else and I hope for future updates (even if you can't help some mechanics that make taking some turns really tedious) but still it was a letdown for me.

Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded - $4.99

Released: Jul 17, 2013
Version: 1.0
Size: 513 MB
Universal App

Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards was first released by Sierra On-Line in 1987 and be-came an international phenomenon. The lovable loser Larry Laffer -- a 40-year-old virgin in pursuit of losing his vir….um, finding true love -- and risqué humor were unlike anything anyone had ever seen or played.

Now Larry’s original creator, the world-famous game designer Al Lowe, has teamed up with Sierra Vet-eran Josh Mandel, to bring this amazing, perverted game back to life – updated and expanded in every way imaginable! All we kept from the original game is the plot. EVERYTHING else is fresh and new including:

•Incredibly lush new high-res graphics! Explore all the seedy sights and sounds of Lost Wages, where fortunes and reputations go to die!
•A brand new musical score by Grammy-nominated and BAFTA Award-winning composer Austin Wintory! Fresh from completing the musical score to Journey (available for download on the PS3), Austin composed the best music Leisure Suit Larry has ever heard!
•Everything in the game was rebuilt from the ground up, including all hand-painted backgrounds, characters, and state-of-the-art 2D animation!
•Thousands of hilarious new lines, gags, jokes, and dialogues, written by Al’s old Sierra partner, Josh Mandel (aka the voice of King Graham from King’s Quest)!
•New characters, new locations, new puzzles, and a major new love interest for Larry!

We gave away the final $500k of cash prizes in Turbo Racing League today in the winners tournament. The $250k top prize was won by the 18 year old depicted below.

Was kind of hoping a GAFfer would be in the mix of finalists, but nobody here seemed to want to try out for it so... oh well :/

For what it's worth I tried playing when the game first released, but then I realized I sucked. So I gave up. I know, I'm a quitter:(

Would have loved to have gone for the gold, but the game just didn't interest me in the slightest. The prize was enticing, but the game just didn't make me care enough to carry on. I love the idea, really, but the big media push behind it actually made me less invested in it. It just reminded me of all the contests I saw as a kid that tied into a big blockbuster release. The bigger the movie, the less of a chance you had at winning something.

To be honest, with the numbers involved in the competition, I think GAF could have had a couple of people in the finals.

Downloading Breach & Clear and Futuridium

What else is GAF downloading tonight?

Going to give R-type a go.

Let me know how B&C is. It looks interesting, but I suspect it is pretty bad for some reason. Doesn't help that I considered it last night and it is 50% off this morning.

Alpaca Evolution thankfully gives you double XP per alpaca on a second playthrough.
Yep, that was a relief haha. And only on my second run I started sliding across the screen instead of tapping, which makes killing and absorbing quite the vicious affair for the poor, doomed alpacas.
