I'm still not understand why people think PS4 streaming is going to be so popular in Japan. First of all, with the kind of price PS4 has in Japan unless that lineup gets a huge boosts it's going to flatline pretty quickly, so not only do they have to buy a PS4, but buy a streaming device for more money and why exactly is streaming at home going to be so popular when the gaming market has shifted so much to devices you use outside the home? Obviously, the device will sell some units, but people are pretending like it;s some amazingly appealing device for the Japanese market and I'm not seeing that whatsoever besides someone thinking that Vita would be a huge hit if the price were lower.
Doesnt Vita TV support streaming from other things as well, like PC? I agree with that i dont see the big appeal with PS4 game streaming within the same household. Vita TV's potential strength is lies in that you can play Vita games for a cheaper price (and play it on a TV instead if people prefer that).

Just like how Torne revived PS3 in Japan.
Does Torne support streaming? I thought that it was a DVR-only device, but i never looked that much into it, so i might be mistaken.

Vita's problem is not price. It has been about the same price as the XL for months now. And Vita TV kills one of Vita's most appealing features-portability.
That's exactly the problem. The reason why is because there's no strong reason to have it. People want it to be cheaper to lower the risk and the The Vita TV show this. I say the sweet spot is $160.

not that big but GungHo's 1 million goal looks more and more likely by day.

how long should VITA develop to become popular? and how do you explain other pictures for revision releases of other systems?

Just like how Torne revived PS3 in Japan.
Both slims were accompanied with a price cut. the psp also had games people wanted to try and the new price point helped. Same goes for ps3.

I know the difference between cross-gen games comes up here from time to time, and this is probably the closest example we will get before launch of a higher effort attempt.

Feel free to judge whether it's a notable difference or not.

To note: This is the PC version of BF4 capped at 720p with some graphics elements like max resolution textures missing since it's the open beta, so it's probably pretty close to the next-gen console versions.

Just open them both up and flip between them.

Of course, Japan seems much less interested in visuals than most of the world, but for those who live there that are, this would be about the most they could probably hope for with cross-gen games early in the lifecycle.

I understand the sentiment that Vita TV will increase sales somewhat in the west, although I think it will be more to levels where it doesn't get thrown off the shelves in America, but why in the world would Japan careabout this thing? Vita's problem is not price. It has been about the same price as the XL for months now. And Vita TV kills one of Vita's most appealing features-portability.

A few points: Vita TV hasn't even been announced for release in the West. When asked about it Yoshida said they might bring it later but for now there is no release date. It is entirely possible that Sony had the Japanese market in mind when they came up with the Vita TV.

Vita and Vita TV as a combo are still almost as "cheap" as a Wii U. For people who prefer a console without a handheld, it's super cheap, for people who want both they can have a real portable handheld and most of the technical features of the Wii U. So it seems like a counter measure to the Wii U.

Another thing is the used/vintage market. Older consoles back to the PS2 are still largely available in used game stores. And budget gamers play mostly these. People here forget about this segment because it doesn't appear in the MC charts.

The Vita may not be too expensive for what it is (if we ignore memcards) but the PS3 still is quite so. The Vita TV is a cheaper HD alternative to the PS3, it's a new device and it is able to compete with older consoles in price. Add PS+, PSP games, used games and you can sell an HD console to some of these budget gamers, maybe for the first time.

It may or may not work but I think it's intended to make people interested in consoles again (prepare for the PS4 too in a way). And it has PS Nova, which to tri-Ace fans is the new Star Ocean. A series which sold between 4 and 8 hundred thousand units. I think we will see more of these type of games too.

Does Torne support streaming? I thought that it was a DVR-only device, but i never looked that much into it, so i might be mistaken.
Yes it does. There is a new tool for Vita called naspocket which you can use to stream all your PS3 torne media server stuff via the internet to the Vita.

The PS3 still has this... thing...
iqgdezdlyhxry.gif

Which will probably be a drop from XIII-2, but will still sell a lot.

The PS3 is also still due for a price cut really; but Sony seem to be prioritizing maximum profit from it.
Guilty as charged.
At this point I am actually more interested in SE making a hentai series for XIII; it'll sell gazillions

You're just giving reasons for why the Vita 2000 is, apparently, unable to boost Vita sales. I think we all agree with you. I think no one in this thread expected a line. But that we all understand why the launch is not working does not negate the fact that revisions are made to boost sales significantly and Sony was trying to relaunch the Vita in some way. You don't re-release all your biggest games all at once on the launch day of your new revision coming in six different SKU's expecting it to just cause an insignificant temporary bump. There were lines for every other revision, so they botched this.

I don't think LR is going to booster PS3 sales, but it can sell well for what it is. A little drop-off from XIII-2 wouldn't be the end of the world. If it ends selling something like 300k ltd, things are going to get ugly at SE... Or maybe not. Perhaps they don't even care anymore what's happenning with their console games.

Even then, it still is crazy to think that we're going to have two FF games that wouldn't even get closer to a million.

Since sony's new management, they have been on a roll lately. With that said do you really believe they tried with this launch? I'm sure this was a calculated move to just reduce cost on their end and not really go after units sold that much. If they really tried they would have released vita 2000 with GE 2 and a price drop.

I'm not really sure of their internal plan but I can say with certainty they weren't really trying. Maybe they're focusing on VITA TV, who knows. My point was the Vita shouldn't be writen off so quickly and that any turnarounds will not be immediate. Especially with how long it underperformed.
I believed Sony wanted to release the Vita much closer to Ps4 launch but couldn't allow the 3DS to have that kind of a head-start. They also couldn't discuss the features of remote play for fear of spilling info on PS4. Now that they are both out we can see what real plans they had for the ps eco-system.

They get released on Thursday (October 17th) after market close (4 PM EDT).

However, it will take a little bit for Microsoft / Nintendo PR to spin the numbers in their favor.
At least they acknowledge the previous month. Sony PR just pretends the whole month didn't happen :(

Damn . even trees where cut out entirely.

And BF4 Beta on consoles has such an outstanding amount of textures and things loading while you play, it' amazing to see some saw poligons when you're approaching a building :lol

Playing it on PS3, maybe that's the reason though

PS3 lineup just keeps getting better. Interesting to see if it will outsell 1.5.

Dragon Quest
Monster Hunter
Resident Evil
Tekken
Ninja Gaiden
Warriors Orochi

Lol, this reminds me of that thread, "Is there any reason why WiiU won't dominate Japan" where people were arguing that the WiiU having a late DQ MMO port, and late a MH3 port along would make the WiiU the have amazing sales. Good times.

By Media Create it sold 5,706 (1,714 first week) on PS3 and 4,853 (1,364 first week) on Vita. The 3DS version which released 3 months later didn't even make the top 1000 for 2012 so it sold under 3,529 total while the Xbox 360 and Wii versions never released in Japan.
Thanks for the numbers. I really hope that Rayman Legends does better than this.

the point is that it's an accessory to provide additional function to the console.
Sure, i was thinking more about that the features can determain how popular it will be. But when i asked, i forgot that the PS3 itself supports streaming media from PC, so Torne wouldnt be needed for that function.

Yes it does. There is a new tool for Vita called naspocket which you can use to stream all your PS3 torne media server stuff via the internet to the Vita.
I was actually thinking about streaming the other way (streaming to the PS3, but i forgot that the PS3 itself supports streaming without any need for an addon), but its cool that Torne allows streaming from the PS3, thanks for the info :) Then people can use the PS3 as a media center (at least for the media formats that the PS3 supports).

I think screenshots tend to undersell the change. Looking at these screenshots themselves, I find it hard to imagine that an audience that is not tech-hungry would care.

Are there many reused assets are in this, by the way? Considering XIII's reputation, I think it's a waste for Square Enix to continue trying to push it further instead of trying to build up a different IP/setting. Even if they just tweaked everything to be slightly different.

I'm really curious as to how KH3 will sell but its way too early to make predictions.

To be fair, many people weren't expecting the huge droughts and lack of SW in Japan to the degree that we've seen.

I would wait until this week's sales numbers come out before proclaiming the Vita 2000 was "apparently unable to boost Vita sales". You (and others) seem to be basing all of your assumptions on 1 picture of 1 empty launch day line outside of 1 store in Japan. Surely you can see how ridiculous that is?

I see the Vita TV more as a product for the western markets (bigger average households), and I guess it's only releasing in Japan first to somehow "make up" for the late PS4 launch.

I have a bad feeling about Vita 2000. I'm also under the impression that Dangan Ronpa underperformed.

Lowering my random prediction from 40k to 20k.

surprised by how many people seemed to think it fly off the shelves. Other than different colours I fail to see why the same people who have ignored the original vita would go out and buy an inferior product for the same price.

There was this on page 11:
So, first impressions retailers:

- About the new Vita, a modest start according to Tadapon. Only 2 pieces of hardware were sold in all the chain of shops (don't know how many shops are). Azalyn says also a calm start, but they sold out the black color.
- About GTAV, Strong sellthrough (80% on Tadapon shops). Best western selling game on Azalyn.
- Strong sellthrough as well for Fairy Fencer on both shops.
- The rest of titles just going.

In a few hours the general selltrhough will be available.

Anecdotal evidence, but zero reports of lines + "modest start" with only two Vita's sold + "calm start" would suggest that the Vita 2000 isn't doing much at all in comparison to past successful revisions. To be clear, I do expect it to have caused a strong increase in Vita numbers week over week, of course, since even new colors boost hardware, but I just don't get the impression that this is the kind of stuff we'd hear from a product that would go on to make a big and lasting impact. We've heard nothing about the 2000 other than that. You either choose to connect dots or you don't.

Game is practically built on reused assets. And while SE could of have stuck and ended with with XIII instead of going full out on a trilogy (I personally think XIII-2 shouldn't have been created in the first place) it's not necessarily a waste for SE to develop LR. In fact, it's probably cheaper for them to make and market LR instead of handling another IP because LR is built on top of existing games.

I believe they stopped trying six months after launch. Basically the only reason the Vita is still selling is because of third-party support.
If they stopped trying we wouldn't have vita tv or the remodel. Not only that be we wouldn't have gravity rush 2, freedom wars and whatever 1st party games coming out.

I think you should mention that the next-gen version is also running at twice the framerate.

Any guesses on 3DS hardware?

Does 300k sound wildly inappropriate?

I don't think the new Vita model will turn things around tbh, but it should be somewhere around 30k at least?

I hope SmokeyDave makes it back to Wednesday! :) just aint the same without him around

Nothing yet on Famitsu. So, I suppose they'll follow the same pattern for MH4: posting the game's sales just hours before the overall charts.

Looks like Pokémon had a healthy launch, no sold out reports as far I can tell, but now both X and Y are sold out everywhere I could look.

Monster Hunter 4 got a new shipment on Sunday and it's still available. Hopefully the end of shortages!
