Can you people play a Vita without a grip?

Yes and without cramping, unlike the 3ds Xl which no one makes a grip for save for dreamgear.

It maybe easier with a grip but i like putting my vita in its case when im done with it and i dont want to constantly be putting a grip on and off, would be a hassle.

Fine for me w/out a grip, but I have smaller hands so that's probably why.

I.e. the XL is a little too big for my hands, but the original 3DS hurts to hold so I can't use it.

Bought that CTA grip. I like it. As long as you hold the vita within like 80 degrees of facing the ceiling, it doesn't slide around. Reduces hand fatigue. I use it most of the time now; reduces hand fatigue for those long VLR sessions. My thumbs used to hurt after awhile, because of how my hands hold the Vita, and the grip fixes that. It's not perfect though, still not as comfortable as your average console controller.

I did play it for a year or something without a grip though. The Vita is comfortable as far as handhelds go.

My new 3DSXL... I've been thinking of importing the CPP XL for the ergonomics alone. This thing DESTROYS my left thumb if I reach an hour of play time.

I did this very thing. And it does work; naked 3DS XL makes my hands and fingers cramp or hurt after 30-60 minutes. The CPP XL was lighter than I thought it would be too, so it doesn't add much weight at all. Only problem is that on non-CPP games, the replacement R shoulder button on the CPP doesn't work, so you still have to hit the original R button. This requires you to arch your pointer finger over the right hump to reach the R trigger. I thought this would be a deal breaker, but I got used to doing it pretty quickly. And it's still way more comfortable than a bare 3DS XL. The circle pad's buxom bulk makes my XL almost comfortable :p

I truly want to love the 3DS. I've tried the original model (with/without grips) and the XL. They are both just completely unplayable for me. My hands start to cramp within minutes. I've even considered a 2DS b/c the lineup is so incredible.

As I said previously though, I find the Vita completely comfortable.

I bought the PDP grip and really like the form factor. It's an all new device for me. However, the right trigger gets stuck down sometimes. I was playing Pinball Arcade, so admittedly I was spamming the triggers constantly. Id like a grip that leaves the L and R buttons naturally exposed....

^ Had a chance to play with the Hori grip? *wondering how you'd rank them

I haven't tried the Hori grip, but from the pictures I'm seeing it looks most similar to the PDP grip. For me, the handles on that kind of grip are too short to make a difference with hand cramping.

I just got one, and first thing I thought was I need to buy a grip.

Analogue sticks are too low to hold comfortably for me, a grip will allow my to hold my Vita a bit higher up so higher analogue sticks.

I use this. It is godlike.

The vita is fine on its own, but this is SO much more comfortable and it increases the battery life by about 8 hours, in my experience. The downsides are that it itself takes a very long time to fully charge (maybe like 12 hours? lol) and that you can't directly hook your Vita up to a computer while this thing is on.

Nyko Power Grip

Same here and I leave my Vita brightness all the way up.

I use the Assist Grip posted in the OP. Its awesome, totally worth the money. You can get one off eBay for 30$.

The main pro side is that is makes the Vita seem like a big Dualshock.

I should get one of these. I feel like it'd be fine without the rear touch, but there isn't enough non-touchpad space on the back to hold comfortably.

damn wish these things were more readily available in stores, really wanna try the Nyko grip. I'll probably get the CTA since that seems like the easiest to find

The Vita feels great to me. Hands never cramp, and the thought of a grip never crossed my mind.

No cramping here. The vita pretty comfortable to hold. I'd buy a grip if there was one with a foldable design. I like keeping my vita in my pants pockets when im out.

Nope. My hands are too big for this console. It is especially painful when I play Killzone Merc. or Remote Play BF4 and Shadow Fall. It either gets really painful, or I have to hold it in a way that sometimes leads to me dropping it on my face while playing in bed. I thought it was ironic that FPS games give me the most pain considering it's what everyone instantly thought when they first saw the handheld. I need to buy a grip. I would definitely play my Vita more if I could play these games without any issues.

I struggle without a grip but that is an injury issue that made my left thumb have sharps pains even on the 360. The 360 controller is fine now but the Vita still hurts if I spend too long playing it.

I used to get cramps when I play the vita because I grip the sides of the system. Then I realized that you are supposed to rest your fingertips on the finger pads at the back of the system (your palms are not touching anything).

I have a vita grip, it works, but now I hardly ever use it since I've changed the way I hold the system.

If you cannot get comfortable holding the system this way, Just get a grip accessory. They are ridiculously cheap anyway. Got mine for 5 bucks.

Palms not touching anything? Thanks for this insight. I'll give it a try.

I tried to google some images to illustrate:

Holding it like this cramps my hands:

Holding it like this does not (the guy is holding the left side a bit weird, the right hand is what I am talking about):

I can play the Vita just fine without grips, maybe because my hands are very small. I could play GBC, GBA and DS as well just fine, the only handheld that give me cramps is the original 3DS.

It's not a problem when it comes to slow marathon games (e.g. Persona 4), but it becomes difficult once I play Wipeout.

If I hold it like in that picture showing Wipeout, I feel like I don't have enough control over the sticks/shoulders since my palms are floating. If I hold it with the fingers curled on the back, my hands cramp.

I'm not at all sold in the 'palms floating' method, since in trying to get a firm grip on most objects, be it a tennis racket or a sword, I find two parts of the hand must be in firm contact with the surface - the palm and the pinky. The 'floaty' grip does neither.

I can use it fine without grips, but oddly enough I find the PSP uncomfortable on my right arm now. Hm.

I don't have a problem, but I also hold the Vita in what I guess is a weird manner.

I kind of rest the middle of my thumbs on the sticks so the tip of my thumb can press the d-pad and symbol buttons without moving and index fingers on the triggers. Side of the Vita touches the inside of my hand between thumb and forefinger.

Might be my large hands, but it works for me.

Killzone Merc was the reason I got a grip. I use the CTA grip:

$13 is hard to not recommend when it improves comfort so much. Sure, it has flaws (covers charging port, adds bulk) but pros overshadow the cons, especially considering the price.

I have the Biogenik Pro Trigger grip:

It's an improvement, but I'd like something bulkier so my hands can grip the device in a more natural position. The Wii U gamepad is the most comfortable controller I've ever held, it just melts into my hands. If there was a Vita grip that had the same form factor, I might never put it down.

I used to play without a grip, like the 2nd photo here in bbtankcs post, similar to the right hand stance for both but, my middle and ring fingers would actually be on the rubber pad, and my pinkies would be right behind the strap loop. Very little bend in my thumb to the stick. But I could never play comfortably when laying on my back. I bought those Nyko Power Grips and it solved that issue. Could it be played without? Sure, but a grip really adds to it. I have huge hands.

I'm actually surprised how fine I am holding the Vita. Even for extended periods.

Genuinely surprised. The PSP, 3DSXL and 2DS always used to cramp up my hands after a while.

I use the pdp trigger grips for remote play most of the time but when playing on the go it varies based on how i'm feeling. Without the grips its so sexy.. With them its a little less sexy but still nice.

Got the nyko grip and I love it. For those looking for them, check Gamestop stores in the US, its sold out online but theres still some scattered about. My Gamestop had one shipped across the state for me

GSG Flash

Nobody ruins my family vacation but me...and maybe the boy!
I wish there was a grip that had L2 and R2 buttons (for remote play) where pressing those two buttons would make a capacitive tip touch where L2 and R2 are assigned to on the touch pad.

Would make playing PS4 on the Vita much easier :p

I honestly believe this is why a lot of people get hand cramps playing handhelds. They grab onto them like they're afraid they're going to get away. Loosen up, guys. You're not going to drop it.

I was just about to post this. If there was a grip like that I would buy instantly. Instead im looking at a few different grips, but dont know. I have pretty good sized hands so I need one. Any recommendations?!

I have and never will use a grip on any handheld device. The Vita is extremely comfortable without one anyway so it's not a problem.

No problems, but I prefer with a grip. Been using this:
And it's quite nice for Killzone, Tearaway and PS4 Remote Play.

Same with the 3DS. Use the Circle Pad Pro all the time...even while playing A Link Between Worlds at the moment. No problems without it, just...more comfortable.

I have the Trigger grips, but want to try out the Nyko power grip for added battery life and better grip factor. The Triggers are great for BF4 remote play though.

Even though I can't say I like the ergonomic aspect of the Vita much or at all I've still never bothered to use a grip. I guess I've just kind of accepted it and gotten used to how painful it is to hold for longer sessions. I have big hands though so most controllers and especially handhelds make my hands cramp after a while. It's getting better though, PS4 controller has been great so far, and WiiU gamepad too.

This looks quite good. Do the triggers hold out?

I've given up trying to use my 3DS XL. I picked up a 2DS over black friday for $100, and it's been wonderful. The ergonomics are vastly better, and my thumbs are in a much more natural position. I didn't care much for the 3D effect anyway, so I'm not going to miss that.

A lot of people dismiss it as being built for kids, but to me it's vastly superior to the 3ds and 3ds XL.
