Beautiful.

everyone play Fire Emblem: Awakening
(it even got #3 in first-place votes, hell yeah!)

So after all the naysaying and shaming aimed at some of the big press lists...

Its turns out GAF loves all the same "predictable" big budget games. For shame GAF, for shame.

You know, for as often as I hear the chorus of "All reviews suck" here, aggregate GAF opinion tends to line up with mainstream gaming site reviewer opinion almost 1:1.

is that really surprising

also man, Nintendo the developer/publisher and Nintendo the platform holder are like complete opposites

Lol @ forza 5 placing lower than Knack. I'm surprised this wasn't much higher and didn't win racer of the year. Too bad drive club didn't come out, would love to have seen how it fared.

Are you really surprised? There was 0% chance of anything else winning.
Just limited myself to play the game, didn't cares much to investigate the general opinin and reception.

It is the best game Naughty Dog has produced in the PS3. But Since im more inclined to the interactive part of gaming, in my view point there were quite a lot more games from important publishers or indis that deserved game of the year consideration.

So yes, i was surprised. Even more considering the image i have from the GAF community... i say this in not an offensive matter but i thought people in here were a bit more specialized XD

NeoGAF, the hipsters of video games.

(No but seriously, I like games that are fun, I don't care who makes them).

But GTA was a lot higher on all of those ballots than Bioshock. On average.

It was higher by the people who liked it enough to put it on their ballot, but appeared on far less ballots, which is really surprising because it crushed bioshock in sales. More people were like me, bought both but only thought infinite was a top 10 game.

What's QuizUp about? Never even heard about that. Maybe you can make a convert right now :D
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/quizup-biggest-trivia-game/id718421443?mt=8

It's a free multiplayer trivia game on iOS (and Android, soon). It might not sound like much, but I've played it more than any other game this year due to the large variety of topics and the "one-more-round" addictiveness of the head to head and async multiplayer. It's nothing groundbreaking for the genre but it's polished to perfection and very well suited for the platform.

I'm not sure if it would even qualify for this thread since it's so far removed from anything represented in here, lol. It's getting super popular on real life.

Great work guys especially timetokill and cheese! Congratulations to The Last of Us!

I think I should've voted for more than 6 games seing as how my recommended list ended up being a lot of games I've played and mostly enjoyed but don't really qualify as games of the year in my mind.

It probably also affected my affinity scores, still, shout out to these guys:

Interesting to see how close it was throughout between 3D World and A Link Between Worlds. Bioshock Infinite at number 2 definitely surprised me, I thought it would be somewhere around the fifth or sixth spot. Tearaway made it into the top 10 which is pretty impressive. Too bad, The Wonderful 101 and Dota 2 couldn't quite make it there too, both still ranked very high though so good on you gaf.

Wow...didn't realize how bad a year it was for Microsoft on the exclusive front until I saw this

I own but haven't beaten 8 of the top 10 games. Now I really want to go back and finish them. I ended up playing many more indie games just because of time restraints but am looking forward to playing TLoU, Infinite, etc. that are both sitting on my console.

Wow...didn't realize how bad a year it was for Microsoft on the exclusive front until I saw this

Xbox 360 Exclusive Game of the Year: Do-Don-Pachi Saidaioujou = 13 points, 1 honorable mention
2. Gears of War: Judgment = 12 points
3. BattleBlock Theater = 11 points, 3 honorable mentions

Xbox One Game of the Year: Dead Rising 3 = 41 points, 4 honorable mentions
2. Killer Instinct = 34 points, 6 honorable mentions
3. Forza Motorsport 5 = 21 points

That 360 list is so incredibly pathetic, it's obscene.

Glad to see Infinite get that many votes. Fuck yes!

Oh, and TLOU. Both games are among my favorite games of all time. Especially TLOU, one of the best games ever made period.

Hah, Fine Ham, please take that Crimson Dragon recommendation with a grain of salt. I sort of threw it a bone, to be quite honest. I mean, I sort of bought the system for the game...and Crimson Dragon is DEFINITELY not the reason why I'm assuming 99% of Xbox One first adopters bought the system. So, I'm definitely weird in that regard. I figured most people outright ignored it because of the game's media response/Xbox One general reception. I had a lot of fun with the game though and I still believe there was nothing else quite like it in 2013. The game's got issues, for sure, but I think there's some good groundwork/potential there for a better, more realized sequel (or proper Panzer Dragoon title). Game music overrides a lot for me too and CD's OST resonated with me, big time.

Zeno Clash, on the other hand, is something I outright think is a BIG deal and it's a shame more people didn't play it, for whatever reason/hang up there may have been. Definitely check out both games at some point whenever the mood strikes!

Great OP, and great work running the voting and tallying, and thanks for quoting me in the OP. A fine list indeed, and a well deserved GOTY.

What the hell happened with this game? I didn't even remember that it came out this year. I don't see anyone talking about it at all. The developers was supposed to be good but still what's up?

Nobody gave a shit about the 4th Gears that is also just a prequel? Same goes for God of War Ascension. Both games feel like franchise cash ins because the generation was so long and you have to produce something.

Bioshock and Tomb Raider making top 10 disappoints me.

Hrm well, my stats sound about right...

Fine Ham Abounds
20% Multi, 30% Nintendo, 10% PC, 40% Sony

I feel like I have some weird taste in gaming now, but its kinda expected that my choices will never rank that high.

Also, a bit suprised that I'm only familiar with one person in my affinity list which is ohlawd, was expecting Mauricio_Magus but our list didn't overlap that much outside of a few games.

/wave

Seems there's a couple people on my affinity list that play things I probably wouldn't, and then I seem to pop up on lists of folks I'm more familiar with.

I can't believe iconoclast was the only person to vote for Mamoru-kun Curse. I shoulda played more of it, because I liked what I had. It was probably gonna be my number 10, but then I got hooked on the Vita Ys and ended up playing more of that.

I have to say, the list was kind of okay this year. A good selection of games, including the excellent winner. Nothing outright insulting like when Portal 2 won GOTY. I don't agree with Bioshock Infinite as the runner-up at all, but I can see where people are coming from on that one. I hope that some of you get the chance to experience Metro: Last Light this year, possibly ported to ps4/xbone.

Dat TLoU domination. Also great to see Tearaway get some of the recognition it deserves.

I've actually played 4 of this year's top 10 compared to the usual 1 or 2 in the previous years so I've become more mainstream I guess
lol

Agreed with this, especially about Metro: Last Light. That game was my runner up this year, best singleplayer FPS I've played in a while. Glad it got second in the FPS list though!

I really do hope they bring it to next gen, though I doubt that's financially viable for them.

Great list this year, I was happy to be able to contribute a decently sized write up.

I really enjoyed following the voting thread and reading everyone's opinions about why they love the games they chose. It was probably one of the most enjoyable threads to read on GAF just because of everyone's positivity.

SMT4 not even in the Top 20? *pushes over a magazine rack*
Hahaha yup.

It was really a horrible year for the 360. I was among the few who had Gears of War in their list. Was not a bad game but I only had it in my list because I hardly played any other games that came out in 2013.
Really a shame what MS is doing with their exclusives. That being the reason why I switch over to Sony

Hahaha yup.

SMT4 might have done better if it had come out in Europe.

My companions:

I'll be honest, I don't recognize any of those names, but that's okay. :p EDIT: Actually clicking on the names, I do recognize some of the avatars, though! Like Anth0ny. xD

Recommended list and my thoughts:

1. [360][PS3] Grand Theft Auto V (Adventure) = Hmm, this is probably because I had Bioshock Infinite and The Last of Us so high on my list - both big blockbuster games. But I've never been into the GTA games, so.. yeah, not interested. xD
2. [NWU] The Wonderful 101 (Action) = I actually JUST bought this last night off Amazon. I've been playing the demo a good bit and the combat seems very fun. The whole Power Rangers-ish vibe is kind of a turn off, but the gameplay seems great.
3. [3DS] Fire Emblem Awakening (RPG) = This is definitely on my list of games to buy ASAP. I'm not a big fan of SRPGs that much, but this looks really interesting.
4. [360][PS3] Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (Action) = Definitely on my "to buy" list. I enjoyed Platinum's other games for the most part, so this will probably be fun as well.
5. [3DS] Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (Horror) = I've never played the original Luigi's Mansion, but I am curious about this one. I want to buy it when it's on sale, though.
6. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf (Simulation) = Honestly, I have very little interest in this one. I'm not big into those types of sim-games anymore.
7. [3DS] Pokémon X/Y (RPG) = Nah. Not into the Pokemon games. Nothing against them, but they do not hold my interest for long.
8. [360][XB1][PS3][PSV][PS4][NWU][PC] Rayman Legends (Platform) = I own this game for the Wii-U, but haven't played it yet. Looks awesome, though.
9. [360][PS3][PC] Metro: Last Light (FPS) = I never played the original, but would like to give it a go as well.
10. [PSV] Tearaway (Platform) = If only I had a Vita... sigh. I'd love to play this.
11. [PS3] Beyond: Two Souls (Adventure) = Ehh, I dunno. Heavy Rain was entertaining, if a bit silly. Maybe later.
12. [NWU] Lego City Undercover (Adventure) = I am interested in this one, but I've never played a Lego game before, so... a bit iffy on buying it.
13. [3DS] Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies (Adventure) = Never played this series, so.. no idea.
14. [360][PS3][PS4][PC] Contrast (Puzzle) = I have this game waiting for me when I get a PS4 thanks to PS Plus.
15. [PC] Outlast (Horror) = Maybe...
16. [PSV] Soul Sacrifice (Adventure) = Another game I want to play on the Vita...
17. [PS3][PSV][PC] Guacamelee! (Platform) = This does look quite fun.
18. [PC] Antichamber (Puzzle) = Hmm, not sure?
19. [PC] Papers, Please (Simulation) = Not my cup of tea.
20. [PC] Total War: Rome II (Strategy) = Same as above.
21. [NWU] New Super Luigi U (Platform) = I have this game, but haven't gotten to play it yet.
22. [PS4] Resogun (Shooter) = Waiting for me when I get a PS4.
23. [360][PS3][PC] Dead Space 3 (FPS) = Haven't played any of the previous games, so.. not sure.
24. [360][PS3][PC] DmC: Devil May Cry (Action) = I will play this soon thanks to PS Plus.
25. [PS4] Killzone: Shadow Fall (FPS) = Already played, didn't like it. Gorgeous graphics was really all it had going for it. Incredibly boring gameplay scenarios.
26. [3DS] Shin Megami Tensei IV (RPG) = Not sure about this one.

Surprising to see Nintendo do so well in light of all of the recent doom threads.

It's also nice to see two Platinum games in the top 20. I really need to get around to beating W101.

SMT IV was robbed as expected :/

It did have the best version of Diablo 3, my most played game of 2013.

Game quality does not have anything to do with how they perform on the market. Keep that in mind.

wonder how Bravely Default will do in the 2014 GOTY thread when much of Europe has already voted for it :p

I specifically didn't vote for it so I could this year if it holds up to the rest of the games coming out. Otherwise I would have put it on my list.

As someone who has Gears of War 3 as one of their ten favorite games of the generation, that was a pretty huge disappointment. They shipped with four deathmatch maps, bro

four

4

IV

as in less than five maps for the most popular gamemodes.

They made a lot of multiplayer changes that went against what I felt was the core flow and philosophy of Gears of War, balance went out the window, stupid control changes for no benefit whatsoever, spent a lot of dev time and money on a mode nobody wanted to play, whole thing was a mess. Campaign was boring, too, sorry NullPointer.

It just felt like a last-gen cashgrab. It wasn't even the best GoW last-gen cashgrab prequel to a popular trilogy release that month(God of War Ascension was better)!
