Apple Vision Pro | Review Thread + OT |

I was expecting this to blow every other headset out of the water at $3500. I'm not sure where the medium goes from here if a headset SEVEN TIMES more expensive than a Quest 3 is only marginally better. I mean it's twice as expensive as my new laptop, and that has an M3 Pro chip in it.

I loathe Meta as a company/ecosystem but I guess the Quest will continue to keep the entire VR industry afloat. I'll only expect incremental improvements from here on out.

Sounds like what a Quest 3 'Pro' would be but limited by the apple ecosystem and with an apple price.
The universal shining star of the device is the displays which are custom built for Apple and only Apple by Sony, which are essentially a sweetheart deal subsidized by Apple's massive economy of scale and buying power across other devices. Facebook couldn't buy these displays if they wanted at any price, and Quest 3 Pro is already strongly rumored to be using low res LCDs again cause they're retarded and don't understand a "Pro" device has to have premium specs to justify its premium price (which was why the Pro 1 bombed catastrophically).

Maybe not these exact displays but something pretty close. But I was hypothesizing a Quest 3 pro, didn't even know it was rumored to even exist never mind that it's displays were already rumored.
The Quest Pro flopped because they specced it out with face tracking tech that raised the price but literally no-one was interested in.
But that's the point really. This isn't doing anything new - well except for googly eyes - it's just an expensive refinement of the tech but severely hampered currently by the apple ecosystem.

I honestly think the headset looks awesome. WSJ's review was great where their journalist wore it for 24 hours. Very fun review. She went skiing. Cooked and created timers by placing them over cooking pots on the stove. As someone who sometimes likes using MR devices for work using the Quest 3 and remote desktop, I am actually super impressed with Apples hardware from these reviews.

But man, this headset just makes the Quest 3 look like a better headset right now. Better price. Dedicated controllers for games. An already robust library of apps and games. Hand tracking that is good enough for moving windows. Clicking links on websites. PCVR is great. Passthrough is infinitely better than Quest 2. It's surprising how similar some of the limitations are between both headsets.

Ultimately, Apple Vision Pro is amazing. And it's going to sell a lot of Quest 3's.

I couldn’t agree more. After watching a few reviews that were all super well done, I feel even better about my Quest 3 purchase.

Side note, I think I’m gonna get high and try some VR this weekend. I’ve never tried it before. I play Fortnite drunk/high all the time.

I just finished the review video from the Verge and it’s one of the best, most articulate tech reviews I’ve ever seen. He goes into detail as to why some aspects of spatial computing may never work or be worth the trade off, regardless of how good it gets. He highlights the incredible tech well, but also gives a very measured and realistic look at its practical use cases. Fantastic review, I definitely recommend watching it.

As for me, I reaaaalllly want to experience the headset for myself, but I already know it’s not a device I’d use daily. I’ll probably buy one, use it for a week, then return it. 🤷

I agree, it’s a really good review

Watching the reviews as a Quest 3 user feels like I'm not missing out on much. It is amazing how much value is in the Quest 3 and cost 7 times less than the Apple Vision Pro. I'm just waiting for augments.
As a Quest 3 user I'm hoping that a lot of the innovations that Apple develop in this space will trickle down to our headsets. Native spacial video playing being the first one.

lol $3500

$3500

LMAO

The biggest thing limiting these headsets isn't the screen or the tracking tech, but batteries. They can't make the headset heavy or else it'll be uncomfortable so you are stuck having to carry an external battery.

I can't imagine this being 7x better than a Quest 3 to justify that cost, and the Quest 3 is pretty awesome for the price. I mean, I'm sure it's neat if you've got an iPhone and are already in the Apple ecosystem, but not $3500 neat.

I guess the question I have to ask myself is should I spend almost $4000 after tax just to enhance my masturbation experiences. I’m thinking probably.
The hand tracking is gonna go nuts when you watch porn on this.. awaiting reviews

The carrying case might be the ugliest thing Apple has ever made.

Apple could shit in a box and sell it for $300 and it will still sell 500k.
That's pretty much exactly what we said at work today.

Personally, I think $3,500 for a headset that hardly has any apps, is beyond stupid.

I think regardless of whether one will actually be getting one of these things or not, the Vision Pro is gonna make waves in the tech world, now that Apple is onboard with VR/AR. The technology here is brilliant, and it’ll be even better once it’s in a $1,000 SE model in a few years time.

The Wall Street’s review was the best one by far, btw.

Parts of it are brilliant but parts are still pretty weak:

+++ Clarity/Resolution/HDR/Blacks - I haven't seen direct comparisons, but I'll just assume it's the best of the best of the best here.
++ Passthrough quality is better than anything else out.
+ OS. Even if it's not super productive like a desktop OS, it's going to get better and better, and the hardware is the best a headset has ever had natively.
+ More streaming 3D movies and more streaming app services than the competition.
+ Odd features like spatial video recording, and the screen on the outside.

- Comfort. Most people are finding it painful after longer sessions. Probably need to purchase additional head strap like almost every other headset device.
- Materials/Weight - not ideal for headset.
--- FOV is not great (worse than Quest/PSVR2). This is not something that will ever get fixed either.
- Passthrough is still not great in low light. Colors are a bit off compared to real life and you still feel like you're looking through a screen, at times text is hard to read and can't see as detailed as real life.
--- Battery configuration/life is bad. You need a cable and a battery pack to use this device, and the battery life is a few hours. Probably can't even watch a LotR movie on it before it dying.
-- No native Youtube/Netflix. Youtube is a pretty big one.
-- No VR games or at least very limited selection due to no controllers.
- No sideloading apps/games (at least at first).
- Really expensive.
- First gen. Likely to be massively better a few releases later.

There's probably some +s and -s I'm missing, but that's how I see it so far.

I think the Apple Vision Pro will be a great product for a very select type of person. It is absolutely a niche product at this time, particularly without a lot of features or content available yet.

Let us not forget the iPhone launched without the ability to take video, send ANYTHING other than plain text messages, didn’t have a flash for the camera, didn’t have an App Store…

The iPhone was a massively limited product. It wasn’t the first smart phone but it did a lot of phone things really smart and that only improved with time.

While I don’t expect Apple to catch lightning in a bottle again like they did with the iPhone, I do expect the Apple Vision series to be one that iterates and develops rapidly.

The device isn’t even officially out yet and they’ve sold half of their 2024 forecast already. That’s pretty good. 200,000 units of a $3,500 device in a brand new category is nothing to sneeze at.

Think about this- this is a brand new platform with its own unique App Store - there is going to be a gold rush for developers to get their app on the platform. 200,000 people are going to be absolutely starved for content to consume on their device. I expect the App Store to fill out very very quickly with all sorts of content.

I think perhaps in around four years or so when a potential consumer grade Apple Vision Air comes out and the world has had time to come to grips with this new product category from Apple- it will really take off.
