I agree, that is a fantastic song (though "terribly sub par" is a bit harsh).

Honestly, without my collection before me, it's hard to think of the best...

One that springs to mind is "You Were There" from ICO. The first time I heard that song it nearly brought a tear to my eye. Quite beautiful indeed and is one of my favorite songs to be produced this gen.

From the goofy side of things, I absolutely loved was the Wahoo Stomp in Klonoa 2. :p

I'll have to post a few more candidates as I think of them...

Nothing... NNNNNNNNNOTHING beats the MGS2 theme song. I forget its name... I'm not talking about the vocal track btw... THE THEME SONG to end all theme songs.

Konami has had quite a few truly great theme songs recently...

A few others that I really enjoy...

Halo's theme
FFX's ending theme (NOT Suteki Da Ne, but rather, the music found during the CG that was fully orchestral)
Here Comes the Rain (Gungrave)
Berserk (Dreamcast game)
Live and Learn (Sonic Adventure 2...cheesy goodness, but I loved it :p)
Tomb Raider AoD Main Theme
Primal - Jen Meets Arella
Dragon Quarter's end theme
Katamari Damashii's theme

It's easy to do when you consider that every single other song on that soundtrack sucks (well, at least the vast majority).

SWEDISH PERFECTION
The Suikoden III opening song is the best IMO (unless I come up with something else later on). I kept watching the intro over and over again. Usually to get me more hyped for the game, before playing. If only the game had the same feeling as the intro.

You can't tell me the Staff Credits song isn't brilliant. It combines the title theme with just about every other theme in the game. Thats some cool shiz.

Oh, come on, will nobody mention any Jet Set Radio / Jet Set Radio Future Song?. I really can't decide which is my favourite original song this generation from "Fly like a butterfly", "Funky Dealer", "Rock it On", "Sweet Soul Brother", "Everybody Jump Around" and a long etcetera...

And I'm ruling out all the excellent licensed music too, like the Deavid Soul songs in JSR...

jcjimber beat me to it, although, I'd really not mention JSRF's soundtrack TOO much. It's good, but JGR's slaughters it.

Let Mom Sleep? Funky Mix? Sneakman? Hell yeah.

It is a good song, but certainly not great. I never really liked that plucky theme that it is based on at all, so it doesn't really appeal to me. It is one of the better songs in the game, though, but that isn't saying much.

Without even playing the game (purely by listening to the OST) I can already tell Baten Kaitos is going to have my favorite song...

I don't have the OST in front of me though, so I don't know the name of my favorite
