What's going to intimidate China, from a US perspective, isn't military fortitude, but economic fortitude. Basically, if Trump makes us less reliant on China economically, it makes them a lot more vulnerable and will only speed up China's economic decline, which is already fast approaching (Though many don't realize it yet).

What's going to intimidate China, from a US perspective, isn't military fortitude, but economic fortitude. And the twist is that a somehow underperforming Chinese economy is the lastest thing the USA wants because that will not bring any jobs back but just would bring more Americans out of jobs.
There is no leverage, there is no chicken game, just Trump who will show the world what kind of idiot he is with his isolatism.

This is sort of my job.
If you are to evaluate China's growth you need to look at proxies for GDP that the local leaders have less of an incentive to fake and are much harder to do such as energy consumption and rail volumes.

For the rest of us that's a great thing. For some reason, Obama gets away with murder - off the top of my head: increasing military budget, untold drone strikes and all the collateral damage that brings, increasing ties with evil empire Saudi Arabia etc etc
At least now people are going to see the US government for what it really is.

The warning signs are flashing right now and the finance community is watching with bated breath to see how the government reacts to a crisis of their own doing. They have essentially built this bubble in an attempt to save "face" rather than let the economy take its required lumps. Weak data is hidden and failing loans are refinanced with additional debt.
