This is a blow. The vague promise to bring the event online doesn't do much to soften it: lag is fatal to fighting games. Smash Ultimate in particular is practically a different game when played online, with its own character tier list.

They should at least do a huge online tournament anyway, most of us are at home anyway.....Why not?...I hope this reinforces the need for fighters and all games in general to push for better netcode on all games, especially fighting games......Skull Girls, K.I and MKXL netcode quality should be the minimum quality for fighting games next gen...

Man that really sucks. I love watching EVO and this year was especially stacked.

I do wonder how online is even going to work. Surely you can't have people across the world competing online for the tournament. I don't see how Japanese players can consistently play against NA and EU players, etc.

Imagine running a 1000 entrant tourney in smash with that horrible netcode. How can you verify if they cheat? This is gonna be a shit show and i can't wait to watch it.

EVO needs a few years off. It's become too repetitive.
