Famitsu Sales: Week 16, 2024 (Apr 15 - Apr 21)

www.famitsu.com

[Weekly sales of software and hardware] Nintendo titles such as "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe" dominate the top! “ARK: Survival Ascended” also enters the top 10 [4/15-4/21]

Sales ranking announced by Famitsu, this time we bring you a summary of estimated weekly game software and hardware sales from April 15th to April 21st, 2024. This week Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Princess Peach Showtime! and Super Mario Bros. Wonder which were all at the top last week, all moved up to occupy the top three spots.

Following in fourth place there are many titles that enjoy cooperative/competitive play and in-game interaction such as Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Nintendo Switch Sports and Splatoon 3. As the new year approaches many people may be using these titles as a means of communication in a new environment.

Among these I would like to pay attention to the new work ARK: Survival Ascended, which came in 9th place. This title is a full remake of the open world dinosaur survival action game ARK: Survival Evolved using Unreal Engine 5. In addition to improved graphics, this is a game with numerous system improvements.

How much impact will the upcoming long holidays have on software and hardware sales? This is also a matter of concern.

PS5 sales continuing to decline in Japan. Unfortunate, but with the current lineup and pricing, it could be worst. There might be further declines next week but I genuinely can't see it flatlining below 15K weekly in Japan, otherwise things could get dire (especially if other countries aren't picking up the slack in terms of hardware overperformance in sales).

As usual Nintendo's dominating the charts for hardware and software, and Minecraft is always accounted for (on Switch). Quite impressed with Rise of the Ronin's hold, though; Japan is definitely carrying that game. If it had a PS4 version as well it'd probably be able to increase its sales by at least 2x in that region. Of course, if PS5 itself wasn't seeing declines, the game would probably also be doing even better without need of any ports.

EDIT: Apparently last week's sales for PS5 were about the same as this week's. I thought they were ~ 25K. So at least it seems like declines have stabilized to around 20K. Even so, another drop isn't out of the picture, and I'd argue Ronin's hold is primarily what's preventing a drop to say 15K as-is.

Peach and Ronin continue showing great legs, will be interesting to see if Stellar Blade can follow suit.

PS5 is now past the point where last year it was getting a boost from supply finally being available. So the YoY drops shouldn't be as bad.

Very good point. That price has to come down soon. This summer at the latest.

  • Ronin and DD2 launched at the same time. Yet one is number 6 and the other out of the top 30.
  • Mario Kart is the game that hits number 1 the longest since release, and also crosses 5.8 million physical.
  • Minecraft crosses 3.5 million
  • Pikmin 4 crosses 1.2 million

DD2 don't have appeal to japanese culture unlike Ronin, so no surprises here. For me is a big win.

And Nintendo is just Nintendo. Its just a shame Sony did a poor job to make Playstation as a brand strong on Japan, their birthplace.

It's very tricky for Sony, as historically a lot of their success in Japan came from third parties.

But these days third parties can't give the PlayStation brand the same strength in Japan as they can in the West.
