Honestly now: I’m 30 hours in and although this is an amazing quality production it’s just that. There’s absolutely nothing revolutionary about it. The things I really like about it I’ve seen in Metroid Prime. And people shitting on TLOU narrative, Ragnarok is nowhere near the down to earth and simplicity of character interaction in those games. It’s exposition after exposition and you don’t feel close to anything or anyone. Nothing hits you emotionally. It gets the worst of Forbidden West.

It’s an amalgamation of every Sony AAA best traits. That’s cool but not enough for a masterpiece like the 10 out of 10s everywhere. Unbelievably well made, looks lovely but there’s no real magic in it.

8/10 indeed. Which is great.

I need more experimental Returnals at this point and less of this.
I mean...when was the last third person AAA game that revolutionized anything?

Elden Ring sits at 96 on Metacritic and uses the same formula of a 2009 PS3 game applied to an open world.

I think looking at the AAA space right now and expecting a revolution makes no sense. These games will always be safe as hell because they are also expensive as hell to make and these developers want people to play them.

Being original doesn't mean it's better. Just like being safe doesn't mean it's worse, specially when the "safe" is one of the best presentations ever in the industry, with top notch mocap, voice acting, great combat system, level design is also good, specially in bigger levels, side quests are a blast in most cases and the final product is a joy to play, responsive, with god knows how many options from a gameplay perspective to the graphical options, accessibility, etc...

Also saying nothing in here hits you emotionally...really? The father - son relationship? Both dwarfs? Thor as a character is honestly a great new addition to the cast. I always wanted to know what was going to happen next. I have yet to end the game but i've had quite a few moments that left me emotional. Specially watching Kratos evolution since the beginning of the previous game.

i mean the criticism is dumb cause no game really plays like God of War reboot.

It’s like the perfect balance between Souls and DMC combat, with extra cinematic flair. Once this game style is phased out theres really nothing to replace it. Most sony first party games have really good combat, which a lot of people try to overlook. The combat in God of War if you are playing on harder difficulties is very rewarding and fun.

Same a The Last of Us, and Ghost of Tsushima, etc.

And for as much shit as people on here give Horizon, there aren’t many 3rd person shooters that are as fun either, especially not any open world games. The only sony game i can say that didn’t feel like it had its own unique twist on combat was Days Gone.

Nearly every Sony 1st party game is like GOW.
Sometimes you can spot a warrior troll a mile away. They usually start their reviews with "Its a good game but" so they sound neutral and then list 90% of pathetic hot takes and hyperbole galore. The dissonance is lost on them.

One thing is consistent since GOWR released and reviewed to acclaim. It cleaned up GAF of garbage with account suicides, bans etc.

Come on now...how did you not notice 2018 God of War's influence on Gran Turismo 7, Dreams, Demon's Souls, Returnal, while swinging in NYC on Miles Morales, etc?

Copy/past bosses? There were a few that were the same model, but offered differing challenges in how you combat them. Many with entirely new moves. Copy/Paste Dungeons? Each dungeon was unique, though a few shared similar core designs - none of it was “copy paste”, unless there was like 2-3 of them that I don’t remember well. Evergoals? You mean uniquely challenging versions of a handful of bosses with a few completely unique to just those locations? Erdtrees would be the only thing that was “copy paste” and even then, they would usually be 10-30 hours apart Unless you left them all for the end and just rushed each one in a series.

Meanwhile in GoW:R it is *literally* a checklist. Its on the feckin’ map screen as a checklist.

I get you are a big Sony Fanboy, but at least have a good argument.

You can quickly see in this video that many of the dungeon designs are very similar. Even the boss fights are recycled bosses from previous fights are enemies that you have fought in the game.

That's what you call "copy and paste." Can't believe you're trying to deny this. GoW 2018 reused a lot of boss fights in his game and so did Elden Ring.

I’m gonna start a review site where the max score is 101/100 so my reviews appear at the top of every list (but only if I’m sufficiently bribed)

This was actually something that bothered me with Elden Ring after a while.
Those Dungeons all had the same appearance and the bosses were also copys.

Im mean yes the world design the amount of places to stumble upon was great no dobut.
But once stuff begins repeating itself I feel like they should've just cut that content entirely.
The same boss maybe twice with some change in Attack pattern or environment that I could understand.
But fighting these cat statues as dungeon endbosses like 5 times was boring.

Sure God of War does this, too. But at least that world isn't as huge as Elden Ring.

I'm a little confused because if the game world is smaller you are more likely to encounter these fights in quick sucession and therefore the issue is worse.

Are you saying that the game world being smaller means it's logical that bosses should be forgiven more easily for repeating themselves? Wouldn't it be the opposite? That a smaller experience would be expected to have less repeating content?

I just fought the 5th dragon for example which was the same as the other 4 dragons. There not even a challange after the first one because they attack the same way except that one that has an extra phase where it stood on pillars essentially giving you a free stun when you knocked it down making it even easier than the others.

No but a smaller game dosn't force me a bigger map to scout/stumble around before i can even find those bosses - which makes me wasting less time.
In that sense Elden Ring was stretching the game / content out even longer without any necessary reason.

I know some people will say that God of War has enough leveldesign/dialogues etc. to be worse - but I enjoy the story and dialogues.
Elden Ring didn't even offer those though.

Or you have countless of Perfect 10/10 reviews and then one single 7/10 and the Trolls be like "Welp looks like my fears were true about the game not being that good, might wait for a sale" confirmation bias at it's finest 🤣

38hrs in, taking my time and still having blast.

only gripe, struggling quite a lot at “no mercy” and feels too easy at “balanced”
constantly switching between these two.
something in between would have been nice.

I felt the same way. Then I started another playthrough on the same No mercy difficulty and now that I understand the combat a bit more, its been a breeze.

Focus on Strength and Defense stats. Max them out the best you can. Use triangle attacks as often as you can. Switch to blades for several enemy types in the game. The blades L2+R1 attacks are very important.

What I do now is basically use Axe to freeze people then switch to blades to do extra damage to frozen people. All my basic skills have the extra freeze element so they freeze people faster.

You have a 3 year old account with 29 posts. You haven't posted in a year until you called this game DLC this month.

You can also spot the troll/AstroTurf accounts a mile away too.

Pretty much this.

It does not try anything new. They really avoid risk in this game and just repeat their success 'formula'.

Production value is insane though.

It's extremely polished product but everything is pretty safe and familiar like Hollywood movies.

Wasn't the sarcasm obvious? đź‘€
This is the second time now, that I had to address that it was sarcasm. No sense of humour? đź‘€
Im obviously making fun of David Jaffe and other console centric fanboys calling this a DLC pre-release

Nearly every Sony 1st party game is like GOW. If you can't see it then maybe take the playstation glasses off and have a look. Having some different side quests and boss fights don't make a game different.
In the sense that their big AAA titles (Uc, GoW, TLoU, HZ, Ghost of Tsushima) all have stories and a third person camera?

Sure I guess, but there is no mistaking one for the other, they all play differently, all have different tones, etc. and none of them can be mistaken for another game from a different company either.

This is not like we could expect to see a new camera angle, or whatever at this point in gaming, maybe the looks will be different, some new game type on an existing style of game, but nothing will "revolutionize" gaming on a TV.

By your definition if they added mocap to the next Mario game it would become a Sony game (BTW, Sony has the best 3D Mario by a mile bundled with the PS5).

I'm not sure that is a real problem either, it only means that the media has matured, so people working on a game project, either alone or in a giant studio have a basic template set for them for almost every game type out there (puzzle, third person adventure, linear, open world, side scrolling, top down, isometric view, fps, violent, non violent, without or without ennemies, mystery adventure, whimsical, gritty, pixel art to 8K, grounded or out there setting, sci-fi/fantastic vs realistic, puzzle, so on and so forth, elastic controls vs twitchy controls too).

Even the things that feel fresh these days have some kind of precedent for at the very least a good portion of what's being done.

I dont care what anyone says, this is the most damning thing to me

Theres just no way you can rate souls games that highly EXCEPT for Demon’s Souls and Bloodborne which is far below the mc average, especially having DS2 at a 90

If they score it a 7 or better the 94 will probably hold. A6 is worse for sure.

But at this point does it matter? The game has probably sold like 7M copies already if not more and no one cares about MC after releasing a game anyway
Edge score reactions always pay off personally because there’s always one dork that’s going to write “Edge being edgy”. And I love it. Makes me snort laugh.

The game is rated too highly. It's an 8.5 at best. Broken combat design as well as the amount of cracks/pillar/crouch areas that just bog the pace down (especially backtracking) because that "other" console can't load the level in real time. I can't believe what I'm saying but the wonder of Midgard in the past game trump's anything here, INCLUDING Valheim.

Sony make cringe trainers.

Yeah it’s not fake in fact I would bet money that the guy who posted it is either the reviewer himself or somebody who works for Edge that is trying to get attention for the publication.

It’s rough when you are late to the party specially when these sort of publications are running on fumes. It ain’t the 90s or even the 00s anymore.

I think the guy is a troll and did this before for GOW 2018. Or so the legend goes.

Edge doesn’t need attention. It’s a dev magazine not a gamer magazine. As long as there’s people making games, Edge will keep going. It’s the Sight & Sound of videogames.

Those reactions are almost as good as when a game has 50 perfect scores...but suddenly has one that's a 7 and you always read 2 comments that go like this: "i'm worried about what this guy said. i'll wait for a sale then. not worth the full price" or "finally someone not afraid to say what they want!"

“Yeah, I’ve been feeling this for a while, the game definitely feels like a 6 or lower for me 2 hours in…”

I’d pitch the game at a solid 8.5/10.

Excellent for the most part, with some plot issues, and limitations due to the aging hardware it has to run on.

The last few posts in this thread are hurting my head.
I’m absolutely loving this game.
What is a game this caliber that’s out right now and released recently on anything?
Graphics A1 Gameplay A1

Every game that gets 10’s across the board always gets people rushing to the internet with hot takes or to say its overrated.

There are also people going into it to confirm their bias because they are over protective of elden rings honor or something. Its weird, for some reason they can’t just be satisfied that two great games came out this year

Of course they have to cheer for their favorite team ! It's a bit of a cult mentality

something in between would have been nice.

I wonder if this is due to balancing difficulty settings with rpg leveling system.

Either ways, while I haven't played Ragnorok but have run into same issues on a lot of games. Nothing bothers me like a game with broken difficulty settings.

When people say a game is polished, this is first thing I expect would be perfected.

That would tell us more about edge than the game at this point in time (we all know how good the game really is).

Media giving scores to games I get, most of the times they write long reviews nobody reads and so they need to distill their thoughts into a number that is easier for consumption.

But there’s something particularly funny about the majority of posters who enter a thread about a game and write half a dozen words before rushing into what they really want to do, give a game a score completely out of context.

One two three four five six I give the game a 7.65! IMO

I have a weird system for how I personally give games reviews, I try not to play bad games in general so if I thought it was worth playing I will probably give it somewhere between 9-10.

9.0 Barely Good
9.1 Pretty Good
9.2 Solid
9.3 Good
9.4 Very Good
9.5 Great
9.6 Excellent
9.7-9.8 Incredible to Masterpiece range
9.9 Basically Perfect
10 I never give this lol

Lower than this I don't recommend the game.
