Thanks alot dude.
Great showing for DS hardtware and software.

p.s. could you give us tie ratios for DS and PSP?

You time these deliberately don't you ;)

PSP software is still selling better than I would've thought after all this PSP is doomed in Japan hype.

The DS outselling the SP in total is news to me.

Top ten is pretty much the same though. 2, sometimes 3 PS2 games and the rest are DS. This time, it's only 2 for them.

Sega's PS2 yakuze game has some strong legs.

I do appreciate the top 100 lists you put together CvX. Puts a little more perspective on respective numbers versus top 10 weekly lists.

I think this thread deserves this

I predict the 360 selling more than the GC in February. It will mark the start of the big turnaround.

I don't know, Had. GC will see the launch of its killer app for this semester, "yahtzee and shangai", it will probably offset a good dozen buyers. We'll see.

I just noticed that DOA didn't actually sell that poorly, 74,000 out of 112,000 Xbox 360's is alot. I thought it sold less than that.

edit: damn you

Yeah, something seems totally off. I know there are different sales tracking services, but for the Media Create numbers, even if I add together Januaries for DS, GBA, GBASP, GBM, and PSP, the total handheld sales only come to 704,178... and now that I've done that, I notice that's exactly 30,000 less than the value given for DS in this thread.

EDIT: Well, cvxfreak has explained where that nearly 400K extra came from.

Amen to that. I mean, not to take anything away from the DS as it's performance is just stunning and deserves the constant praise it's receiving.

But if one can acknowledge that the DS is doing way above expectations, and is one of the best selling machines in Japan ever, why if the PSP doesn't do the same is it considered a massive failure?

I mean, are these terrible numbers, especially compared to the GBA, because they seem pretty damn solid to me:

16 / Monster Hunter Portable / Capcom / 127,599 / 361,382
27 / Super Robot Taisen MX Portable / Banpresto / 73,882 / 73,882
31 / Nouryoku Trainer Portable / Sega / 59,646 / 244,845
45 / Minna no Golf Portable (PSP The Best) / SCE / 41,657 / 94,990 / CT= 494,151
46 / Geki Snegoku Musou / Koei / 40,573 / 91,257
53 / Boku no Watashi no Katamari / 36,650 / 65,282
57 / TALKMAN / SCE / 31,493 / 78,338

IMO, this is the only disappointment; hopefully it'll do 100k+ in both NA and Europe:

83 / Metal Gear Acid 2 / Konami / 17,028 / 39,262

Wow, that's a huge difference. PSP definitely has a problem, especially since the tie ratio just doesn't seem to improve, whereas DS sees a constant growth.

It's like being Max Biaggi or Sete Gibernau when there's Valentino Rossi around. You may be a champion, but you just can't win.

Luckily for PSP, anywhere else (I think) it is not overshadowed by its cheapass rival.

If only you had all the data.

To put it in perspective, DS sold more software in January 2006 than PSP did all of 2005 and 2004. That doesn't take into account December 2005 where DS exceeded PSP's CURRENT total by 216% or the fact more DS hardware has been sold than PSP software.

To answer the ever-present non-games complaint, I totaled up the 4 Training games (3,956,105), and then Nintendogs + Animal Crossing + Tamagotchi (3,822,252). Considering the total DS installed base, that would split things to

Training ratio: 0.68:1
Dogs/crossing/gotchi ratio: 0.66:1
Everything else: 1.70:1

This is my exact point. Heed these two specific points of my original post:

'But if one can acknowledge that the DS is doing way above expectations, and is one of the best selling machines in Japan ever, why if the PSP doesn't do the same is it considered a massive failure?'

and

'I mean, are these terrible numbers, especially compared to the GBA...'

My point is not 'LWAL the PSP is doing 'this' well so that must mean the DS isn't so hawt1!', but rather 'the PSP isn't doing nearly that bad at all, and the doom cries are only the result of the magnificent DS performance coupled with hyperactive and overzealous Nintendo fanboys'.

Again, you don't have all the data.

Until January, Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire sold more than all PSP software.

So yes, absolutely terrible compared to GBA.

I'm supposed to be surprised by that? It's fucking Pokemon. If the LTD thread isn't a good enough indicator, and I don't have access to sufficient data as you say, can you provide examples of how, relative to life since release, how the PSP comparing to the GBA in various different titles, from big name to middle of the road to crap's ville?

And I'm not saying anything one way or the other, I'm simply asking because by the looks of the LTD thread, it's seems rather comparable. If you have data that says otherwise, I'd like to be enlightened.

But this is much worse than it did a year ago. 14 psp games have sold more than 100k,
9 were released in December 2004 and only 5 were released in 2005! That doesn´t bode well for 2006...

Sorry, but I can't go that far. I don't have the absolute total for 2001 and the beginning of 2002, but GBA software sales for games within 2001's top 100 stand at 5,345,607. That's after 9 months and one holiday season versus the PSP's thirteen months and two holiday seasons and software sales at 5.54 million. Those four first months of 2002 for GBA are pretty hefty, too.

EDIT: GBA sales that appear in the top 100 for all of 2001 and the first half of 2002 total at: 8,099,297. They are very likely over 10 million for the period.

huh?

Pretty monstrous DS sales considering all the shortages too. And the software sales are insane, the DS games in the top 10 alone sold 3.5m+. The only downside to this sales data is that only one of the DS games in the top 10 is non-Nintendo (in fact in the top 25 there are only 2 non-Nintendo DS games)...looks like the 3rd parties need to do some work. Nintendo clearly understand what will sell to the DS target markets better at this moment in time

So much for the XBox 360 in Japan. Also, the DS hardware numbers for January alone are fucking unreal.
especially in regards to this:
87 XB360 [eM] -eNCHANT aRM- From Software 16,486 16,486
When did this come out? Unless it was the last day of January, this is pathetic. Hell, even if it were day 1 sales it would be bad, if this was supposed to be one of the 360's big RPGs to help in Japan.

That's insane. Can you even imagine if the Revolution is even half as successfull as the DS?

Insano numbers, to be sure.

as someone that usually prefers japanese made games to american made games, this is good news for DS owners.
it's definately true that japanese developers are going to focus on the DS more than the PSP from now on (i'd have to assume that based on every little bit of sales data from japan) but now i have to hope that publishers bring all those awesome japanese games over to the west!
