I don't enjoy playing Okami - What's wrong with me?

Who's the best wolf on Nintendo-systems?

I even got the Japanese physical Switch-version. I'm a couple hours in, past the first two big dungeons, but I can't bring myself to continue :/

The dungeons were actually fine, But I *hate* the artstyle. I fukkin hate it so, so much. Yes, the thing that eeeeverybody praises this game is what I hate the most. It's what kept me from playing all these years, then a year ago or so a friend told me it's her favorite game .... so I wanted to give it a try. And I love Zelda, so why not.

But now I just can't. The battles are repetitive and not very fun. The artstyle sucks. The exploration is nice, the dungeons were good. Sigh.

Is it worth forcing myself to continue?

sell it back. because the game is super long (40-60+ hours) and it just continues doing the things you dont like.
But its a great Zelda clone basically and the humour is and scriptwriting is good imo (kamiya style).
And theres tons of japanese mythology references. But if it didnt click with you, skip it.

Eh, I didn't enjoy it much myself, which I realized halfway through after "winning" and then revealing that there was a lot more story to actually go through. It's not for everyone. Seems to be popular with Zelda fans. I haven't met someone who loved Windwaker and hated Okami, or vice versa.

I couldn’t get past the art style myself. It’s try-hard without at least attempting to be playful.

Loved everything with Okami. I even platinumed it on the PS3. Only gripe is that it overstays its welcome. Kamiya should've cut it down a couple of hours of fillers.

Drop it, if you don't like it now, you're not going to like the rest of the game. The art is basically the only reason it's put on a pedestal, the game itself is an overlong, mindlessly easy Zelda clone. I got 20 hours in and realised I had another 10 to go and just gave up, wasn't having any fun.

I tried getting into it twice and just couldn't.

It also doesn't help that in true Zelda fashion the whole intro is painfully slow/bad

It's a rather dull game, it just feels like it didn't age well at all.
Nothing wrong with artistic games but if they're not really fun then who cares

Gamers and press tend to over hype everything they like. There is no such thing as a “must play“ or “greatest game of all time”. Games are toys and entertaining time wasters, or at least for mentally healthy people they are. So treat them like you would that. No one says “Malibu Barbie doll is a must play!”

so for god’s sake, never feel like you have to play any video game.

edit: this is not to diminish the vital necessity of play (including irl dolls and other irl toys) for actual children. I assume most everyone here is over 13.

My biggest gripe with Okami is that there's no "skip button". You have to sit through the entire beginning. I've never finished it because I'd rather skip all the fluff and get straight to the game play. The NDS title wasn't bad, but it wasn't the best thing on earth. I've never felt like Okami was all that satisfying. I wouldn't mind going back, but I hate having to sit through all the cutscenes. I just want to skip all the dialogue and get straight to the game.

I own multiple copies and couldn’t get into it either. I know it’s gonna sound weird but every area feels the same and I think it may be because the art style.

I remember loving it. I played it close to release on ps2 and it was a breakthrough game. Like, nothing was close to it, maybe Ocarina of Time.
Maybe it was great at the time and now its meh. You have to consider the game was released in 2006 !

What I remember the most about it was the distinct art style, the celestial brush, both in combat and while exploring, and that it was loooooong.

You like and don't like what you do, no big deal. Who fucking cares?

Look at me. I hate breath of the wild, fortnight is fucking shit, nintendo is general is a terrible company that just re uses its same old shit over and over again, I don't like cheese on my burgers, I think Hudson hawk is hilarious, and I don't think women or gays or blacks deserve any special attention and should be treated like the rest. Billions disagree with me but I don't care. I just focus on things I do like and it makes my life much happier instead of worrying about what others like or dislike and comparing myself.

Oh and okami isn't that great really. It has a cool art style, but the game itself I didn't find too engaging. I never finished it myself.

This thread sure brought out the Okami haters. It's a feature length game that's more than the sum of it's parts. It's an experience that rises above it's Zelda template, with a story that leaves you wanting more, artstyle and music that soothes the soul, gameplay that does something different for a Kamiya directed game. The dev team went out of their way to make the credits in the PS2 original more special for those able to complete this feature length game, and rightfully so. Personally, I picked up, got stuck, and dropped the game many times myself, but finally beat it and beating Okami is one of my favorite gaming feats so it's up to you what you wanna do OP but I'd keep the game and give it a break for now and resume it later.

You can skip in the HD port. I believe it was only the PS2 version that wouldn't let you skip until NG+.

I stopped playing Okami because of the voice acting. It is a fucking horror.
What do you have against gibberish?

I think it's a masterpiece. But it's definitly not for everyone.
Just stop and don't force yourself. You don't have to like it, nobody will care anyway.

I would at least play it until your battle with Orochi. If you still don't find the game to be any charming then I guess it's just not for you.

It means you have an awful, truly horrid taste and can't recognize a masterpiece.

I suggest you move on.

I played through the original PS2 version back when it was new and honestly was kind of underwhelmed, I expected more after all the rave reviews and awards back in the day. I didn't hate it, but it's definitely got irritating problems. The biggest issue for me was that it re-used bosses multiple times which in a game like this just seemed really lazy.

In the end, I generally liked it, but agree with the earlier comment that it's a solid 7. Personally I think the game picks up after a slow beginning, so you might want to stick with it. On the other hand, if it seems like more work than fun, then yeah you might just want to skip the rest.

For me it's one of the greatest games ever made and I honestly had a blast with it. Played it for the first time on PS3. It's definitely a game that had a super lasting impression on me and it's not often I connect with games like this anymore.

When I saw the thread title and a poll I thought we were going to vote on what we think is wrong with you.

I'm disappointed.

I managed to finish the uber boring and long tutorial in okami and played it halfway through, then stopped and didn't look back. Don't know exactly what was the reason for it. Maybe it just became stale, it dragged on and on and on without something really new happening. Also, I don't like controlling an animal.
