I find it mind boggling that some adults don't know how to swim

My local pool costs $70 /mo to be a member, which is pretty steep, although you get access to other amenities as well.

Decades ago my town refused to let Hispanic people swim at the pool, and we, of course, know that other brown and black kids weren't allowed to swim. This certainly has had an effect on whether swimming is a part of a kid's life or not because of their parents' experiences.

I am more confused by people who go out boating or SUPing and don't know how to swim, but don't use a life jacket. My area is known for people drowning in ice cold bodies of water by people who don't wear life jackets. While I don't need a life jacket because I know how to swim if I'm SUPing, what I don't know is if I would be knocked out by suddenly falling into icy water.
