"Inside' developer originally had a deal with PlayStation, but Phil Spencer called the studio and said “Listen, we need to make a deal”

Yes, both Microsoft and Sony make deals like that all the time. And why is this a thread?
You might believe that but one of those deals is part of a « healthy bidding war » while the other, which may look similar in appearance, is actually slimy and an act of desperation.

I have had 2 ablations in the past 15 years and got over it before this guy got over Tomb Raider.
People get over this so well that every single time MS gets something exclusive we get a new thread of "Phil is a lier", "MS are buying their place on the market" and other ridiculous complaints people can come with.

Lying, buying your place or any other cunning strategy has been an active thing for 40 years, time to "get over it".

Remember Jim Rayan "We believe in generations" followed by the news that most of the games shown that year were going to be cross gen? People complained about it too. Yes lying and "buying your place" is often done in business. Not a reason to stop being unhappy about it if we want too. When people complained about Hogwarts Legacy Playstation exclusive quest, did you ask people to get over it? If yes, do you really refuse to see why some people are not happy about it? If yes again I honestly think that lying or hypocrisy is harmful in the long term for companies. Of course being nice does not exist at that level. I suppose that it is a matter of personal tastes.

Why is this such a issue?. Its happens all the time in the industry and goes all the way back. I seem to remember SONY demanded that Herdy Gerdy come to the PS2 when some at SONY Europe saw the game running on a DC or how MS looked to steal Abe from the PS2 and have it on the Xbox.

The number of bullshit threads lately is silly and all because MS bought StarField

came to
It was never an issue until it became a false equivalency with buying major developers and publishers

Is this the thing the paid XBox shills do to build positivity before bad news comes out?

You are pretty naive if you think that there are megacorps that play fair. I bet you any money that Sony do shady shit just as well as Microsoft all the time. They've just been better at hiding it (so far). And I reckon Nintendo do so as well.

Edit: I remember that Sony did everything in their power to especially sideline Sega all the time. And then they had the gall to go to Sega's CEO (Kutaragi himself went to Nakayama) and say to him he should turn third-party[1] which is why, when Sega finally gave up, we didn't see any Sega games for a bit on Playstation 2. There was just saltiness on Sega's side. And if Playstation already began with practices like that, they sure as hell haven't changed, I can guarantee. It's just that Microsoft's bullshit is less covert and they can "out do" Sony in that regard, which is why Jim Ryan is whining. Not because of the practices but because Microsoft just has more resources to do them than Sony.

And we all know the shady shit Yamauchi pulled all the time to keep Nintendo's third-parties in the fold.

None of these big-ass corps are saints. If they can get away with shit, they gonna do it. Or at least try to.

That was sarcasm, obviously a moneyhat is a moneyhat. In fact it’s worse when the market leader does it since it’s basically abusing the lower cost of exclusivity.

It's really impressive how some of us make 1 simple point yet warriors seem unable to grasp it.
They all do it, yes, but only this guy complains to the public through the media like a hypocritical politician drumming up warring from his true believer base.
One simple point, easy to understand not a convoluted mess of a post going in every direction to defend shitty pratices.

I find this quite unbelievable, but obviously not impossible. Given the exclusivity was only for 8 weeks it really isn’t actually that interesting of a story, either way.

You think Jim Ryan was making those calls?
To me that seems a bit desperate.
Probably some under him for most of the calls. But I wouldn't be too surprised if he'd make calls himself for big things, like for example securing marketing deals / buying off temporary exclusivity for shit like GTA 6 or so. It all depends on how the companies are structured. If Phil has other people doing other things for him so he can focus on deal-making, then that's what he does. If Ryan lets other do the deal-making (and he probably should, since every time Ryan opens his mouth, some stupid shit comes out; the guy needs PR training) then he can focus on something else.

I dunno why people make such a fucking drama out of this as if this is something new or extraordinary. It isn't.

The heads of these companies have entire teams beneath them whose job it is to secure content. Even the big deals are done by people who specialise in that area, for example at PlayStation that team is lead by Shawne Benson. Only rarely has the head of the division got involved (Andrew House with Kojima).

Phil getting personally involved for a small indie is reaaally weird and well below what he should have been doing.

We don't have any info about how Microsoft's Gaming arm operates within. But I firmly believe that Phil has enough experience to know when to delegate tasks and when to do shit himself.
Or maybe that indie studio is just talking shit (which is what I believe) in order to score some PR.

And they've succeeded. For some reason, this nothingburger has turned into yet another drama

It is hilarious if that is how they operate or did operate. The head of Xbox calling a random little developer in Denmark to get their game on the system.

It worked for them I guess, but it seems such as a tinpot operation if true.

Phone reception is more important to me than human rights
So, MS can outbid Sony for timed exclusive deals....

Bingo.

Its also amazing how Rise of the Tomb Raider just gets swept under the rug. Especially since this happened around the same time.

Or the many timed to outright console exclusives the Xbox 360 had. And this is with MGS4 still stuck on the PS3.

They all do it. That Sony has been able to get better deals after the PS3 gen just means they are in a much better position. Thats all.

When MS was in a much better position the 360 was the timed/3rd party exclusive king.

Meanwhile when Nintendo gets 3rd party exclusives:

Who the fuck would do "anything" for an Indie game? No wonder MS is toilet water lately.
How it's phrased reminds me of the Team America hero proving his willingness to do anything...

Phil spending money isn't shocking. Even if he literally said it, he hardly meant billions for some still small indie game anyway.

Whatever. So far the strategy with throwing money at the problem has not yet shown great results but it should eventually get them somewhere.
