Little Caesars testing self-service pick-up "Pizza Portal" that works via mobile app

Automated pizza pick up in the works at Little Caesars where the company is testing a heated, self-service pick-up "Pizza Portal" for a service that they're calling "Reserve-N-Ready."

The Pizza Portal is essentially a large warming oven with separated pizza slots that works like a pizza vending machine. According to Little Caesars, it is the first "heated, self-service mobile order pick-up station" in the fast food industry.

The way it works is you order and pay for your pizza via the chain's mobile app and will receive a notification through the app when your pizza is ready. You can then go to your local Little Caesars, walk up to the Pizza Portal, and input a 3-digit pin or scan a QR code. Then, the locked compartment with your pizza will open and you can grab it and go.

The Pizza Portal and Reserve-N-Ready system is currently in test at select locations with plans to expand to other markets later this year.

The machines are like lockers that keep pizzas hot until you pick them up.

You order and pay for your pie online through your mobile app. The pizzas are placed in the portal, and it unlocks when you arrive and punch in either a unique three-digit number or flash a QR code into a screen.

Fewer lines. No cashier.

It's like getting a DVD from Redbox or cash from an ATM.

The service, which it has dubbed Reserve-N-Ready, is an extension of its Hot-N-Ready model, which has long offered hot pizzas on demand at stores, the company said. To use it, you must download the app on your phone.

“We changed the pizza game when we introduced Hot-N-Ready," David Scrivano, the CEO of Little Caesars, said. "We think Reserve-N-Ready featuring our breakthrough Pizza Portal has the potential to do it again.”

The automation raises concerns about whether the company will lay off workers, but the company said there still will be someone at the store counter to order more pies -- and the new technology will require more hires to teach customers how to use the portals.

The machine, which was co-developed with Apex Supply Chain Technologies, is part of a test. The pizza company said it expects to roll out machines in 100 stores this year, and more nationally next year.

call me when i can get an actual pizza portal next to my desk where i just reach in with my pizza peel across a dimensional gate and pull back a pizza without having to get up from my chair

So it's just ordering and picking up then.

I like Little Caesars for what it is, but the hot and ready thing leads to tons of waste, occasionally getting old pizzas, and lines or pissed off people when they run out of ready pizzas.

Pizza Portal sounds like the type of thing a late 80s cartoon protagonist would fall into in the premiere episode.

We might achieve quantum supremacy by the end of 2017. You could be on to something here.

Could make a snide comment about $15/hr minimum wage but this shit is coming regardless of how much (or little) you pay these people.

Meh, you still have to put on pants and walk inside the store.

I want a drive-up portal where I can sit butt naked in my car and grab the pie.

So what happens to all those hired people and already hired people once customers learn the new system? I think we all know.

They will still have someone at front like always?

Old people fucking hate technology when it comes to ordering shit like food/not everyone has a smart phone still.

I don't see how this is anything but positive. The less interaction I can have/quicker I can get a pizza the better.

Sounds like your city needs Pizza Patron. It's the greatest thing ever. Drive thru pizza, wings, and more.

Their quesostix and churros are to die for.

They also accept pesos.

Whelp, that store in Troy is only 2 miles from my parents house. Guess I know what I'm gonna try when I fly home for X-Mas.

They are relieved from the burden of menial work. Thank goodness! We just need a government that does something to support its people as the traditional concepts of "work" grow outdated.

Automation is a good thing!

I'm no fool though. With the way the world is, all that money and labor saved will float up to the tippy-top. And the rest of the population will proceed to suffer more than ever. We could have it so easy if only the poor were more educated and the rich more ethical. (The blame falls squarely on the rich and powerful, let me be clear.)

i admire this as someone who appreciates the journey of getting food out versus delivery but also despises eye contact with other humans

Why tho? Every time I go there they already have pizza ready, I've never had to wait. This will get you in and out like 15 seconds faster?

The pizza still needs to be made, cooked, and cut. There still needs to be someone answering phones, taking orders, handling walk-in customers, running the drive-thru. All this does is free up a little bit of one employee's time, since he/she will no longer have to stop what they're doing to hand a box to prepaid web/mobile customers. It doesn't really replace any employees or save all that much labor.

People also missing out that the regular registers are not being removed, this is simply an additional option for people. The register and regular walk up customer service is not going away.

This. I mean, automation is coming for everyone, but Little Caesars is fine for now.

I don't see how this would make someone want to go to Little Ceasars. You still have to physically go into the store and walk to the counter, just here you can type a pin in instead of asking a person for your pizza.

I guess if they were super busy than maybe you can avoid the counter line.

I would be in favor of it.. I do know the ramifications of what could happen... but they still need someone to actually stock the pizza portal, and not everyone is going to be paying from the app.

I would rather stay in my car and wait for the pizza to be ready and just walk in/out rather than standing in line or standing/sitting inside waiting. Would be a lot more convenient for me, personally.

I use chic-fil-a's app regularly for my orders. There is almost always a long line at lunch rush, and using the app bypasses that line completely.

I'd probably use it. So long as I could get other not-pizza items from it as well, it would probably save me the ~5 minutes or so waiting on my order if I walk in any other day.

And given the amount of foot traffic my local one gets, management would have to be insane to hire someone for register duty alone. Everyone there is in the back making whatever and they only handle customers when they come in.

Have you ever been to any chain pizza place? They all have two to three employees making pizza's and whoever is closest to the register when you walk in takes off their gloves and assists you. Nothing will change with this.

They continue to make pizza behind the counter?

the staff would still be reduced. as they wont need as many people now.

My beef with this is you cant trust your pizza is Fresh. Little ceasers makes alot of cheese and pepporni pizzas and have it sitting there waiting for an order. I want my pizza fresh. i guess you could get a unique topping to counter that tho, but still.

They already have pizza vending machines though? I've seen several in Orlando and automats have been coming back in NY after going away.

I'm curious how these automation attempts are going. From the fast food places I've been that have been using these... nobody actually uses them because they look intimidating and a hassle compared to dealing with a regular cashier.

Too many special orders. Most people like to think their food is being freshly prepared, and pulling food out of a warming oven kinda ruins that illusion.

LC has pizza ready to go in warming ovens already.. All this does is eliminate the middle man.

Read the comment I was replying to.

This isn't full automation, I'm not saying it is, but that poster is referring to the additional people who will be hired for this transition and then let go. And when this is widespread and standard, they absolutely will have the benefit of needing less staff at once, at least during their busy periods. This is a sign of the times and the coming of automation. Everything I said still stands.

I mean on a more widespread scale. People at Little Ceasar's and 7-11 don't mind paying for trash that has been sitting under a heatlamp for hours because it's cheap. But automats for legitimate restaurants are probably not going to come back.

Anytime I went to LC and pizza wasn't hot and ready... people were PISSED, I have seen some bad tantrums and rants over a 10 minute wait.

LC is trash tier pizza, but it hits a spot that needs to be hit once every few months.
