Fuck, I just started this and finished the prologue, but I unfortunately read a spoiler:

I read that the "Snake" I'm controlling now isn't the real snake, but just a body double. That's literally all I know, luckily.

But please tell me GAF, I could've been spoiled worse, right? My spoiler above won't be anything like getting spoiled that Bruce Willis is a ghost in that one movie, right?

Of course, but apparentley
"Venom Snake" is not the same person as "Naked Snake" back in MGS3. Big Boss has a body double which is in fact Venom Snake.
That particular fact is what got spoiled for me, nothing more than that luckily. But I'm hoping I read it slightly wrong when my brain realized it was a spoiler and started to panic lol.

That's probably the largest secret in the game.

Mission 16 with the Skullz was a pain in the ass. I hate that enemy type with a passion.

The skulls missions are definitely the low point for me. Hate those with a passion as well. The last one I did (with the whisperer), I got a small chicken head and I had no qualms using it. Fuck that noise, just run straight past them. I'm starting to get a bit done with the game, I don't think I'm going to finish it. If chapter 2 really sucks, maybe I'll just finish chapter 1 and call it a day.

I just don't agree with the concept of introducing enemies randomly during a mission with absolutely no way to defeat them. You have to replay and either switch out your gear/buddy (e.g., I was using D-Dog until the end when I had to quickly drop D-Horse so I could escape) or find a way to exit the hot zone on foot, which doesn't work because of the absurd speed the Skulls have.

You can stealth it, or outrun the Skulls with the cargo truck (though this depends a lot on where they spot you stealing it).

Also, there's a lot of locations where you can ambush the truck that also provide cover to call in an air drop of a different weapon or buddy, or even a vehicle.

And the mission briefing suggests mobility is important. It gives you enough information via briefing and intel to consider bringing added firepower or mobility, or at least prepare air dropped weapon boxes that are already landed and sitting near by (behind cover) should you need to switch.

Just picked this game up on sale at Best Buy. I don't think I've played one of these games since the PS1. Is there any good video or site to get an understanding of who/what is going on?

Spoiler free? I mean, there are the digital graphic novels for 1 and 2. There are movie versions for all Metal Gear games on YouTube.
But if you don't care about spoilers, SomecallmeJohnny has an awesome synopses for every MG game except MGSV.

Honestly, I forget there is even an intel/briefing option since it's just a VO from Kaz or Ocelot. It'd have been nice if that had been worked into the cutscene at the beginning of the mission. Considering you spend 30 seconds to a minute landing down, that'd be the perfect time to go over the briefing.

I'm going to pick up this game after buying it at launch and not completing it.

I understand Konami changed this game for the worse. What advice do you have for me? Should I keep it in offline mode? PC version here.

what are you talking about?

It wasn't too bad, I S-ranked all the missions while I played through the story which meant I could use stealth camo and the works to get through the side tasks.

Can you use stealth camo and infinite ammo on those repeat missions at the end of the game? I assumed you couldn't.

Yes, you can. Just restricts your mission ranking to A or lower.

Yep! And the restrictions don't matter because you've already S-ranked. Another thing that sped it up for me is that I found you can abort mission/go to acc after you've completed a task and it would save the progress (you don't actually have to complete the mission).

the biggest problem with mission tasks is the tail and listen to conversations missions because those conversations don't always trigger. sometimes you have to be at a certain distance from the characters, sometimes you can't use stealth camo at all. etc etc. super annoying.

well that and back up, back down

Congrats. I can't imagine doing all those mission tasks.

Side tasks are my favorites, lets you understand the sandbox design of MGSV

Conversion tasks are like ghost run challenges but the problem is they can easily break

Love Back up and Back down, that mission was awesome

Back Up, Back Down. Ugh. Don't remind me.

IMO it's impossible to spoil the actual plot in this game since it's so gutted and barebones. If you had actually played until that point you probably would have been just as surprised because it makes no fucking sense whatsoever.

Just enjoy the gameplay itself. It's the game's main redeeming quality, and it's spoiler proof.

Ok
So, I was playing the game doing the episodes until the point that I made almost all.

There was only one mission left, and it was the episode 46, which was not showing up.

So I was “OK, lets see the requirements”

"Complete all other story missions (except duplicates such as extreme, subsistence and total stealth variations) (CHECK)

Complete all important Side Ops (the yellow ones) (CHECK)

and than

Complete all 28 platforms at Mother Base (build an FOB in online mode to speed things up)
"

Exactly the thing that I hate the most in the game!

I calculated that would require me at least 15 in game hours to complete the Mother Base, so NOPE, I’m done with this game (thank god there is youtube).

My overall experience was disappointing to fine and this game made me appreciate Splinter Cell Blacklist more.

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if they patched that in. But yeah, completing mother base absolutely was not a requirement to unlock mission 46

Not sure about the real requirements, but I'm certain I hadn't finished my MB by the time mission 46 unlocked.

I love you two!

The information was wrong, I just needed to listen one yellow tape that I forgot to listen and and then EP 46 unlocked.

Tried getting into the game again. I still can't get over the UI and typeface changes introduced in patch 1.07. It's a constant reminder of Konami's post-game tampering every time the iDroid opens or the sortie prep displays and the inconsistency of the design is so evident. Just ugh. Gimme the unadulterated version.

So took a break from this for a couple of weeks before jumping back in yesterday. Played about 4 hours worth. Something about this game sucks me in like no other. As usual, I still find more enjoyment doing the side-ops and free-roaming than I do playing the missions.

Case in point, Mission 18 where I had to extract the child soldiers. Got to the mines perfectly fine. Took me about 6 tries of escorting these little shitheads 500m to the chopper.

Neutralizing the enemies along the way was a cakewalk. But when some random trigger happens where 5 random enemies show up from behind and the chopper descends, everything turns into chaos. I somehow loaded up all the kids onto the chopper while blowing up the enemy heli and extracting before my heli was destroyed.

It's moments like these that aren't necessarily tense as they are frustrating.

I'm not sure if konami patched it out but when I was doing that mission I just tranqed the kids put them on a jeep and fultoned the jeep outta there. I platinumed the game and I've never escorted those kids ever

I am not a smart man. I heard "don't shoot the kids" and thought that covered every weapon. Fuck me and my lack of imagination. I'll go back once I unlock the wormhole futon.

Spent the entire weekend trying out the FOB events again. It was actually pretty fun, granted the description did say beginner friendly. lol

Yeah sometimes I think the problem with FOBs is less the core gameplay, but how it was sort of forced into the SP experience as a MP element. It can feel like forced PvP, even getting PKed and looted, and the whole resource grind/online resources makes it feel very grind-y. All things that can distract or taint the sort of 'immersion' of SP and the story revolving around you (that sense of importance and power).

But the actual core gameplay of infiltration FOBs is pretty cool. And that first SP version of an invasion, mission 22 or 23 or whatever, was awesome.

In a game that lacks urban areas, security cams, and basically MGS2/MGS1 urban infiltration, FOBs do an awesome job of providing that if you can sort of detach yourself from the PvP, grinding, etc and just do them/appreciate them for their core gameplay.

Are there any tips on completing Bound Dragons? I tried twice last night and was spotted immediately. I've never done an FOB event before so I'm wondering how to get to the control room successfully.
Personally, I'm doing something like this (except clumsier... also, you don't need to fulton that many guards this time around), but then again, you may not have access to that kind of equipment.
