Nioh |OT2| You Can Be My Yojimbo Anytime

I legit gave up.

Me too. First thing in this entire game I have given up hope on beating. The combination of the massive health pools along with the huge damage herd you get being forced to use those damn wooden weapons is genuinely the first time the game has made me feel like it is unfair.

I've had weird instances where I would still be attacking and moving when at 0 HP and can still damage people. So odd... PvP really feels like an afterthought. It needed some form of standardization to the whole thing. Set people's level to a certain point and tie gear to that level. Try to balance it out.

(Also could you re-link the videos? For some reason they're bringing me to my youtube video list)

The Kunai are also really strong in PvP and the lag makes it hard to dodge them considering their large range.
Oops, I messed up those links, here (edited my post too):

That is just nuts. It sucks too cause I feel like a legit PvP mode with effort put into it could actually be really fun. The gameplay is there- it's just the lag, bugs, and inbalance that ruin it. Not to mention some skills/weapons just don't fit well into a PvP setting. I love the ability to instant cast stuff but it just is OP in PvP.

Hmmmm, didn't realise so many people were having troubles with the dojo missions on WotW. I think they are very good as they force you use and fight against every weapon w/o using magic, ninjutsu and LW. They also essentially teach you human bosses and revenant movesets. That being said, each and every dojo mission has loops that you can use to make them easier given some practice.

Here are my tips for each weapon:

- Single sword: Use backwave (just frame guard). The timing is more strict than the effects that comes from a timely guard on some pieces of gear but with some practice you will be able to do it w/o thinking. The problem with backwave is that it only grounds enemies for a short time. Generally you only have time to do a final blow, however if you do an iai strike on an opponent's back as he/she is getting up, he will crumple and stay on the floor for a longer time.

So the combo here is backwave -> circle round to the back and iai -> do another fully charged iai -> final blow -> full mid stance quick attack combo on his/her back. This is will do great damage even with wooden weapons.

- Dual swords: Use the shrike parry. It has very lenient timings and I'm surprised it is still in this form after the haze nerf. Then you can do a fully charged Sign of the Cross into final blow and do another SotC as they are getting up. If you are uncomfortable with the parry timing, you can use a mid/low stance God of Wind III into ki pulsed SotC. It is unblockable after the kick part of the string and does great hp damage and ki damage.

- Spear: It does have a parry but the timing is very weird for me but that may be because I haven't spent that much time with spear. But it does have quite a few skills that will ground human enemies.

You can use the high stance spearfall skill, if the last attack in the string hits they will be instantly grounded allowing you to move to the back and final blow. Then you can do another spearfall on his back and chain it.
There is also a sweep move that you can do to ground enemies but they block it a lot. You will have to do it while they are in an attack animation. Also after you have grounded humans you can do a move called chidori, which will juggle them in the air, it doesnt do much damage but you can essentially do this again and again and they will never get up given that you have enough stamina or can use ki flux.

Failing all that the spear kick move is a great ki damage move.

- Kusarigama: You can use the high stance serpent strike move to pull them to you and then immediately use the high stance foot sweep move to ground them allowing you an easy final blow. Most of the time he will block the initial serpent strike so do it while he is an attack animation.

- Axe: Use Tri-spark or even simple high stance normal attacks as they all do incredible ki damage allowing you a grapple or final blow. Lumber chop is the highest single damaging move in the game but I don't know how to use it that well though.

- Odachi: Again normal mid stance and high stance moves do good ki damage but the skill crashing waves makes the dojo mission a joke.

- Tonfa: Use the backwave equivalent and you can essentially stunlock Hanzo using demon dance into pulverise into another demon dance pulverise. Rinse and repeat.

Don't get it twisted though, outside of very low toughness enemies like Hanzo and Okatsu most humans will simply hyper armor though your pulverise and attack you. It won't be a pretty trade for you. In fact, using pulverise against 200 toughness revenants is more a liability than anything else. Instead just spam gun devastation on everything to kill things fast. Disappointing that such a high combo potential weapon is simply reduced to spamming one particular skill, which is only possible on one particular tonfa. That's cos all the other moves are kinda weak to the point of being useless.

------------------------------

I've almost completed 100% of the WotW missions (just waiting for twilights to cycle) and it's essentially the same difficulty as WotD if you were using light armor. Got one shot before, you get one shot now too. It's been quite comfortable apart from Super Masamune but I've got some tips to deal with him too if anyone has problems.

I can understand how specialised builds like kunai, LW or buff heavy builds would have problems though.

Outside of Dojo missions, wotw has been far easier than wotd and that was before I stopped being underlevelled

Edit : whoa xuchu, that iai trick sounds awesome. I wanna try it at home

Everytime I try Sign of the Cross/Iai strike on staggered/fallen enemies, I run out of time for a final blow, it seems :(

So my favourite damage combo is essentially Shrike -> Final Blow -> Sign of the Cross. Are you saying I actually have enough time to do Shrike -> Sign of the Cross -> Final Blow -> Sign of the Cross? Do I need to ki pulse perfectly into these? I could have sworn I tried that without success.

Wow that's insane especially that first video. /:

I haven't played PVP since the day it launched, its such a mess.
Yeah, it's a real shame. I gave up on it because with such wonky balance and glaring issues it's just not fun at all, but the few "balanced" matches I've had were really really fun. :(

Yeah, timing is tricky and different enemies have different timings for getting up.

Here is a good video on how to crumple enemies for a longer knockdown, you simply have to judge when to release iai/SotC as it has to be as they are getting up:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pshnvsRd9r0

For the medium speed wakeup enemies like the Masters, run behind them then start the SotC loop.
For slow wakeup enemies like Revenants, Muneshige, etc do one SotC then get behind for the next.
For fast wakeup enemies like Maria, sorry it doesn't work. Only time for final blow, maybe SotC afterward but risky.

But yeah, shrike -> Final blow -> SotC is consistent and more than enough to deal with most humans. Just rinse and repeat really.

Does it sort of work like souls ng+?
Not really, no. You will never lose access to any other difficulty, as you would in Souls. You can freely toggle between the difficulties in the map screen and each difficulty beyond the initial Way of the Samurai has their own progress bar, though you do need to more or less complete each succeeding difficulty level in order to unlock the next one. They also differ from the Way of the Samurai in the sense that you start with first three regions unlocked all at once, and then unlock the ones coming after by completing the missions in any order you see fit.

In case you haven't noticed Sloth works better in Wise than it used to work in Demon after patch 1.14. It's actually worth using again.

This is helpful but it doesn't help me pass the damn Omnyo dojo missions which were the ones that had me seething with rage and made me just give up in the dojo all together. The amount of time it takes to whittle down the Yokai's hp is absurd. Especially since they can kill you in two or three hits. The one on one fights are difficult but not nearly as hard as the damn Omnyo trials. I actually managed to beat two of the weapon dojo missions after 3 or 4 attempts whereas I tried and failed 32 times to beat the Omnyo missions.

Yes, it's a difficult mission and I just did it again to remember and familiarise myself with the waves again.

  • Wave 1: Two small fox spirits
  • Wave 2: A lighting onyudo (tongue monster)
  • Wave 3: One Nue
CtTXhlx.jpg

4A4Rmfm.jpg

The previous omnyo missions either gave you enough talismans, elemental shots or different element oni-bi to teach you to trigger the confusion status (discord). Unfortunately, that is not the case here (at least on this difficulty).

Let's see what they give you and how you can use them to beat the mission:

For anyone who is unfamiliar, the kekkei talisman when active automatically purifies yokai zones. The Rejuvenation talisman gives you a heal over time and the lightning stop talisman will raise your lightning resistance. The protection talisman will nullify a set amount of damage, but you will still take overkill damage if a taken hit passes this threshold.

I used single sword to beat this mission so all my tips are based on that as I am most familiar with it and dual swords.

- Wave 1: the two foxes are the hardest part of this mission. They're fast, do quick and hard damage and don't really care about your water element. However, using low stance single sword quick attacks they can be stunlocked very easily. Unlike other weapons, this is cos single sword low stance quick attack string quite literally never ends.

But still play safe during this wave. I would recommend using the protection talisman to nullify a single hit from a fox. Don't be afraid to blow both on this phase as it is the hardest. I would also recommend elixirs as being your primary form of healing in this phase. Blow all of them if you have to.

Focus on one, of course, but when you have one fox stunlocked make sure you can see the other fox and keep an eye on when it is about to attack or shoot a fireball. I would suggest equipping the swift step low stance dodge skill to easily get out of your attack string. It also has a ridiculous amount i-frames. Couple that with extend evasion invulnerability and it's borderline broken.

I would suggest holding block until you get them to headbutt you, then you can start your low stance infinite combo. However, don't go crazy and allow yourself to run out of ki. Ki pulse dodge out as you're reaching 10-20% of your ki. Rinse and repeat really, this wave will be the cause your deaths.

Sometimes, if you get lucky you can get them both stunlocked at the same time. If that the case, go ham.

- Wave 2: One Lightning tongue monster. You faced 100's, if not 1000's of these before and you know it's rather limited moveset and what it can and cannot do.

The lightning version is weak to water and at 40 magic and I could apply the water debuff (decreases his defense) on him using two water shots. Feel free to use three or even all of them on him though as you won't be using any in the next wave.

The strategy here, as with most yokai, is to do steady ki damage with quick low stance kicks and then punishing heavily when he is out of ki. You can fully block all physical and elemental damage (w/o any elemental damage from guarding effects on gear) from his sweeping and lunging tongue attacks or you can play more aggressively using low stance twirl dodge through them (anecdotally I believe they have more i-frames but I could be wrong). When he is ki-broken, don't be afraid and iai-chain him as you can get a good 3-4 iai's on him before he regains his ki. Don't always fully charge though, especially the first iai, as he tends to do a quick hand slap after he is ki-broken. Release it early if he's going to attack. Two of these cycles should be enough to kill him.

If you get hit by his tongue it probably won't one shot you but it will apply the most annoying debuff in the game onto you. I know you know this but for people who don't lightning debuff causes all your actions to be massively slowed. Movement, attack speed and even healing will be slowed.

But just take it easy and kite him until it wears off. Use a rejuvenation talisman while you're kiting even if you have elixirs left. Don't attack even if he is low on ki or ki-broken as your attacks will be too slow to adequately stun him and you're just putting yourself at unnecessary risk.

You can use sloth talisman on him if you want but I've always found that it hurts me more than helps as it really messes with my dodge timings. Maybe you can use it just before he is about to get ki-broken to allow you to iai-chain more easily.

- Wave 3: One Nue boss. Again you've fought it around 20 times before and know it's moveset.

Pop your lightning stop talisman, the kekkei talisman and the protection talisman if you have any left . He is weak to water so pop the first of your water talismans to imbue your weapon. Don't bother with the water shots as he seems to be more resistant to that. again you can use sloth but I've found it messes with my timings.

Here's an easy and reliable method to beating him that I've posted previously:

Through out the fight you will be looking to bait his lightning breath attack by standing in front of him at mid range, quickly run to his right (your left) and attack either his glowing belly or his face. You will instantly ki break it and can use a couple of big combos.

The lightning breath always travels from his left to his right, so run to his right. I find attacking his face to more consistently ki-break it than attacking his belly from the side. What I do is a full four hit mid stance combo into one fully charged iai-strike. Don't be afraid, you will stun him before he hits you with his claw. At 99 heart this does around 2500 damage with the wooden sword.

However, don't get greedy. After the iai, dash out as the boss will try to regain ki by putting down a yokai zone. When it does this two lightning strikes will occur, one on top of him and one where you are. If you are still wailing in him you'll get double bolted and will instantly die.

When you see the boss arch its back and then scream that's a telegraph for its call lightning. There's always 4, simply keep moving to dodge them. If you have the kekkei talisman popped run over the yokai zones after the lightning strikes to automatically purify them.

If you're running out of ki, try to switch stances as you ki pulse as this will be give you a net positive ki. This is called flux and really helps continuing combos or staying on the offensive when you're below half ki.

Just do this around 10-15 times and you will find this to be the easiest phase.

-------------------------------------

Yes, you do low damage but I know you can do this given some time and practice. If you're getting frustrated, just take a break or do another mission and comeback.

All of these tips and practices come from going through all of the missions, sub-missions and most of way of the strong at level 1. It is fully possible to do this mission and others with the low damage of a wooden sword. Just takes time and practice. Hope this helps you and others.

Oh I haven't tried on wise but it was working for me in Demon.

The fox spirits aren't present in way of the demon. The first wave are two statues but yes the preferred strat was to use the water shots to one or two shot them.

Also, I just saved onto USB and respecced to 99 magic to see if this massively affects the water shot damage in the mission. Not really, at 99 magic they take 778 damage and barely does a 1/20th of their health bar.

Thanks for this. Even with this though my main problem is the amount of time it takes to kill the foxes and the Nue when I actually make it to him. I'm just not capable of executing perfectly for that long. I always make a mistake or two and they inevitably lead to my death. It just demands perfect execution for such a prolonged amount of time I find it near impossible for me to do. I do appreciate the advice though and I respecced to sword in an effort to try and use it and after about 10 more attempts I'm still nowhere close to clearing it. I've yet to manage to get Nue under half health before dying.

It's just really frustrating as I've not had much difficulty at all with the rest of the WotW content. I even beat all of the DLC and twilight mission on WotW. It's just the stakes of mistakes and death are so much more absolute in this dojo mission. There's no progress made every time I die. I know why I die it's because I made mistakes but like I said previously it feels inevitable for me with how much time it takes to kill these enemies. I fear I'm just not good enough af the game to finish it.

Is level 251-260 gear as rare as 201-210 gear used to be? I almost have everything at 250+30 and have a kote at 257 but once I reach +30 I don't think I'll put myself thru the trouble of trying to find max level gear and wait to see what the next dlc has in store.

Have many people got the platinium trophy for Nioh?

I spent an hour last night farming dung piles for that weirdo in the castle sewers

Figure if I'm going to literally farm shit for a stranger I may as well go all the way and get all the other trophies

Yeah, I wouldn't bother farming 260 gear as team ninja is just gonna make things obsolete in the next dlc. We'll probably get back to the lvl 320 gear we had in 1.00. Hell, I wouldn't even really bother too much with trying to get GG ethereal gear too as they will probably either add a new rarity tier or simply make ethereal gear easier to obtain by adding ethereal smithing texts or something.

As much as I love this game, a lot about this dlc has soured me on Nioh especially the extreme grind they have introduced.

I am so slowly making my way through WotD so I can catch up. I feel like I do tickle damage to everything.

You need to rethink your build then.
When I started WotD doing shit damage and at some point you just can't continue like that, you'll get destroyed :p
It took me some time to do a good build but I don't regret it

I got the platinum, Super satisfied when it finally popped for the blacksmith trophy after I took a two month break to platinum Persona lol

turns out you don't actually need to do much for the dung trophy, you can pick them up from future missions as well

Thinking of buying this in the current EU sale, just wondering what are people's thoughts on the season pass, is the DLC content good? Worth paying €18 for?

The DLC is good only if you are really into this game and wanna maximize your playtime. On it's own, not really great. But they give a lot of replay value IMO.

I'm nearly finished with WotD and just don't want to invest money and materials into gear that will quickly be outdated once I get into WotW. I tried to copy some build, but it uses a weapon that has no smiting text, so fuck that nonsense. Too many stats in this game and reforging is so damn confusing.

Anyone need a Sanada crimson dlc? I never picked up my GameStop pre-order since I got everything cheaper on PSN at the time and I never showed at the stop until today. Somehow the dlc was printed on the receipt even though I cancelled the preorder and brought something else.

I just started and I suck at this game. It's glorious though. Looking forward to unlearning From games habits while learning the intricacies of this game. First though.... I need to remove myself from underneath this wrecking ball. :(

Ok, if you can get the enemies in a sweet spot of the AOE whirlpool, Nurarihyon can deal massive damage to them, works best against large targets to get all three balls to splash immediately.

The whirlpool also stays even if you switch Guardian Spirit. Hit them with a Fire spirit like Suzaku and you'll get mad DOT damage from Water, Fire and Confusion.

I've just bought this in the sale, played about an hour last night. Is there anything I really need to know about it going in? Can I completely fuck up my build and make it unviable or anything? There's tons of loot right so don't need to worry about missing some weapon?
