Onimusha demo out now. Impressions thread.

Just finished the demo.

+I really liked Musashi's characterization and the brief interplay between he and the "woman in the gauntlet"
-The visuals while nice enough kind of lack personality. I finished Onimusha 2 for the first time this week and the areas in the game hold up wonderfully and often have a painterly look to them.
-Animations are a little stiff. Musashi looks like he needs to take a deuce when he runs.
-Combat is stamina based and has a stance break system. It feels really, really slow and the parry window on block feels really generous. You'll see more trash mobs in any given encounter in the demo than were ever in the PS2 titles. The "problem" is that they treat you like a Hong Kong martial arts star and only attack one at a time (beyond the archers). And once you stance break an enemy you can usually chain 4-5 kills off that break.
=I do like that some enemies feign an attack to try to throw off your block/parry timing.
=The boss fight (speaking of fun personalities) was a little more interesting in this regard. Still incredibly easy to parry and then stance break, but you have to wear out his stamina bar twice and his attack strings are more challenging. His second phase throws in a grab that most be dodged instead of parried which most trash mobs don't employ. The clash mechanic during the fight is a nice call back to Onimusha 2.
-Being able to move while soul collecting kind of kills the risk/reward of that mechanic.

Combat is a blast and it manages to feel like classic ONIMUSHA while also feeling modern. End boss was super tricky and dropping it to story showed off the timing for the button presses for block and dodge (which i needed to know cause my old man brain could not read the 'non parry' red flash in time).

I played ONIMUSHA 3 again recently and loved the sense of adventure it had. This lacks that so far. It is just a demo so whatever but I missed that. I also felt the colors were way too washed out. BUT overall the combat feels fantastic and fun and I am jazzed for the final. Oh, also, the English VO is pretty bad IMO.

Capcom has been delivering the goods this generation.
This year alone…

Be careful when switching to 120hz and then attempt to restart the game as instructed. I ended up with a black screen on my OLED. I actually had to pull the TV plug off and back in to get the screen back.

Jaffe is it true that you guys were inspired by the original DMC when you designed GOW? Also didn't Ninja Gaiden also borrow from it? I am stoked to watch the Odyssey soon and loved God of War. Thanks for producing one of my GOATs!

Played both Series X and PS5 Pro. Series X looks good has play anywhere.PS5 Pro has ray tracing and motion blur options and frame rate does feels smoother on pro along with a sharper image.

Probably get PS5 pro version. Parry timing felt easier to pull off consistently.

Please tell me two things...

You can enable Japanese voices? How are the black levels, as in does it look as washed out as the trailers or is that just a HDR thingy?

I dont know about the whole HDR thing but there is Japanese voice option in this game.

I just beat the demo on PC. It's not a technical marvel by any means but it looks nice and clean, and has a great art style. It also runs like butter with everything maxed out, not a single slowdown, shader stutter, frame drop during my playthrough. The gameplay is fast and fluid, I really enjoyed it. I was very on the fence but after playing it I'm 100% in, day one. Literally my only complaint is that it's way too easy. Once you pick up the parry, deflect and dodge mechanics, which should be simple for anyone who plays these kinds of games, there was nothing that even remotely posed a challenge in the demo. I even no hit the final boss of the demo on my first try, which is crazy for not knowing any boss mechanics. Hopefully there is a third difficulty in the final game.

First thing I did was switch to Japanese voices and they are really well done. As far as the black level, It didn't seem too washed out to me but I didn't play with it a bunch. The HDR adjustments didn't make much sense in-game, they seem to be based on arbitrary numbers rather than an actual nits scale. It wouldn't surprise me if HDR is broken like most games and will have to be fixed by modders, which will suck of you are on a console.

It is only the first level, but so far it plays like Sekiro for noobs. Why is it so heavy and slow? The combat and enemy animations are amazing. Parrying feels great. Good graphics. But I just don't see anything special about what this games combat does better than Nioh or Khazan. There are no stances or button combos? Where is the depth?

Phantom Blade Zero is going to take all the oxygen out of this game when it releases in early September

I am very wary with Chinaslop these days. This could very well be another game with very restrictive combat that relies on meters to do actual damage.

Day 1. Love it. Would like the parry timing and dodging to be more last second than having to do it so early though. Also why tf is my entire wishlist coming out in September? 😐

Slightly OT: With Dawn of Dreams coming out in August, chances of an Oni 3 remaster are slim now?

I feel this new Onimusha is more honest to the classic games. Not relying on cinematic flash or autokills. God of War, which you know very well, has removed all the freedom in its combat, and the gore as well. Its only GoW in name. I feel this Onimusha isn't 'modernized'.

I hope GoW one day also returns to something thats heavily based on the original trilogy.

Jap voices yep. As for HDR, to me it comes down to how well your TV / monitor is calibrated and what the model is. If you have a garbage hisense TV for example, you're not gonna have good HDR regardless of what you do.

I have a Sony A95K, it's pretty, pretty good. Haha.

But it's not necessarily HDR for me. I just noticed tue washed out graphics because of the grey black levels in the trailer. Bad HDR implementations or settings can cause that. It can be artistic choice as well and it will be in SDR like that as well then.

Hey yo Capcom
I heard you let people play the game at gamescom and TGS
And i just want you to know that me and Kev don't care because we want to play it at home smoking pot.
So just release the demo on psn.
Hey yo.

Mmmmm What a Rush it would be to play the demo.

You know we don't believe Satoru Nihei, or Akihito Kadowaki, when they say they don't know the whereabouts of the demo. We think that Nihei, Kadowaki and Capcom know where the demo is because... we looked all over the psn... we looked all over their side of the internet... we had the xbox guys looking and we had nintendo fans looking. We can not find the demo. We love the demo... British Bulldogs love Onimusha... and please Sony Heenan, please Capcom, please give the demo back for British Bulldogs...

Sony Heenan... we know that you [unintelligible] the demo... we know you [unintelligible] the demo... Please return the demo to the... please give the demo back to the British Bulldogs. Onimusha Way of the Warrior is like a little child. We love that little demo. Please developpers give the demo back
Glad to see my lobbying paid off in the end :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Can't even try the demo until this weekend, but my impression is that it will be killer.

The Odyssey looks like actual woke slop.....good luck with that.

- The parries are the best I've ever seen.

- I love the weightiness and transitions of all the moves/movement.

- The sound of the katana being sheathed fully with that clang is satisfying.

- The way the main character animates to cover his sword arm again with the shaw after sheathing his blade is a nice touch

- The whimpering of the scared and/or injured villagers while the priests pray sounded great and believable

- Just like the original it is giving Samurai Evil vibes

- I love how the MC speaks. I ran up and killed enemies quickly and he says "Barely worth my time!"

- Lords of the Fallen like mechanic but much less annoying

I was typing these out slowly as I am going through the demo. Just finished the part where you're surrounded. This is a dream come true game for me. May take GoTY from Crimson Desert. This is amazing. I love everything about this! The graphics are amazing and it runs very smoothly on my PC. The only thing I can think of to improve is allowing more camera angles in the full game. If they don't a mod will come to let me see the action from further out.

just played it on PC and what can i say , it is everything i wanted a new onimusha to be
the animations , sword strikes , traversal and character modeling are all incredible
day 1

Played through it on Pro in performance mode 120hz VRR felt smooth I think it runs up to the mid 70's so those tiny bit extra frames does help on the smoothness and looks good overall Pssr doing work. The quality mode is meant for Ps6. The frames are too low for me.

Just finished the demo. Holy fuck another capcom banger. Looked pretty meh, but atleast runs extremely well on PC and the combat is satisfying af. Game is super easy tho hope its just the demo

I was hyped for this with the previews. Demo sealed the deal. Definitely day 1.
Was a bit easy. But I guess I'll just adjust the difficulty on release.

Played a bit on Deck. Ran fine out the box on lowest preset with fps fluctuating in the 40 to 60 range.

That said the experience wasn't great from a controls perspective. I'd actually prefer a mix of the 2 available layout. Or just let me rebind them.

Will play again after work on my PC.
