Paris Hilton on the PSP

Guys, I don't mean to come off as a troll, but I've been meaning to ask you this ever since the PSP came out....

In all honesty, how can you guys find satisfaction in watching movies on such a small screen? I mean, isn't that kind of ambiguous? The damn thing has a screen size of 4.3 inches! 4.3!!! I'm sorry but that's way too tiny to extract visual enjoyment out of a film, especially an action movie like Spiderman 2.

My laptop has a screensize of 17 inches. The screen is absolutely gorgeous and games look wonderful on it. But make no mistake I don't think I'll ever succumb to watching feature films on it like Spiderman 2, The Matrix, Star Wars, etc.... Those are the kind of movies that deserve to be watched on a big screen TV or front projector. Hell.....as crazy as this sounds, I've owned my 65" widescereen rear projection CRT TV for 5 years now, and even that's too small for me. I need at least 100" to watch a good action movie.

So that being said, why watch movies on a PSP when you can enjoy them on a much bigger screen at home? A screen that tiny should only be used to play games or watch something with little to action or suspence like say, The Chappelle Show or some other TV series.

You seem to be ignoring the whole PORTABLE part of PSP. I'm sure you enjoy games on huge TV's too. Unfortunately I don't have pockets too hold a 65 inch tv. I don't have pockets to hold even a portable DVD player. What is nice though is on a plane trip to whip out my PSP from my pocket and watch a movie or two. Or if i'm waiting for my wife who is shopping for a hour to whip out my PSP and catch up on some episodes of Lost. Action is action regardless of screensize and looks just as good too me. Keep in mind most people aren't anal elitist videophiles. If you can't understand the appeal of that then either you can't see things very objectively or you were just trolling.

Well, I WOULD watch TV shows on the PSP if they would actually release some. But I've watched the Spider-Man2 UMD that came with mine and I've put some small trailers (like FFVII:Advent Children, yaaaay!) on my poor 32mb stick, and I can tell you I have no problem getting joy out of it. I watch DVD's on my computer in the background all the time, with the player half covered up, and still enjoy them. Yes, even action movies.

I guess it's really all a matter of preference. My TV is only 27" or so anyway, so maybe I'm not aware of what I'm missing :lol I just don't need the screen to completely take up my vision to enjoy the movie.

EDIT: Actually, as far as screen size is concerned, it matters WAY WAY more to me for games than movies.

Hmm, I can see your point, but maybe it's because you're young? Under 24? I know that when I hit 25, I couldn't watch them on anything under a 27". As I got older it just got worse. Upon getting my 65" I was so relieved that I could finally ditch that tiny 27" and get a somwhat decent movie/gaming experience. Does does matter gentlemen.

duh ... PSP's success or failure will ultimately be driven more as a movie playback device than a game machine ... I will be proven correct, in time.

Selling people their DVD collection to them again is one thing. (Blu-Ray/HD-DVD's challenge)

Selling people discs that are the same price as a DVD without room for bonus content and only play on a portable platform is insanity. Especially if it's what's going to drive success of the entire platform.

I still don't know one person who's purchased a UMD movie. Everyone I know who owns a PSP that cares enough to play movies on it just bought a big mem stick.

What does age have to do with it? Losing our eyesight, are we? :lol

I can't wait until future civilization digs through our formerly majest cities only to find copies of Paris Hilton UMDs, Movies, TV shows, clothing, etc. These are dark times...dark times indeed :(

Then get some. Or carry a purse. At least with the portable DVD player it plays media that you can watch both at home and away from home. I own my favourite movies on DVD and there's no way I'd buy a second copy to watch on the PSP. Or buy one on UMD that I don't own on DVD and not be able to watch properly. Blah.

Hehehe...

The whole UMV thing is cool but I really don't get the practicality of it.
I cannot watch part of a movie, stop and resume another time. I will have to sit and watch it all the way through which can only be done on really long journeys.

Oh well there is that Japanese porn..

god do I hate UMD movies.

Why?

Even if you take no pleasure in them yourself, they're not harming any other market segment you may have an interest in--it's not like you're ever going to walk into your local Suncoast only to discover that all the DVD's have been replaced by UMD's, forcing you to watch everything on a 4 1/2 " screen from now on. :p And for those of us who enjoy watching movies on the go and don't want to waste time and effort to rip and encode stuff from DVD, UMD's are a cheap, convenient solution. So what's the problem? Skip 'em if you don't like 'em. :p

Well, I actually am only 21, so your theory holds true for now :lol

Although, my dad is horribly picky about watching movies, won't watch Fullscreen if he can avoid, HAS to have great sound quality, have to have speaker system on, etc. but never complains about our TV size. And he's a weeeee bit older than 24 :D

Maybe it's a feel of immersiveness.... No matter how good the movie, I still feel like I'm being told(shown) a story. With games, I'm actually interacting with it, so size becomes more important then.

Good post. That's kinda the point I was trying to make. I don't know what it is but there is some sort of connection between TV size, immersiveness and one's age. I just don't feel immersed in anything under a 65 inch screen.

Since I'm at work, I don't mind gaming on my laptop even though it's only 17 inches, because I don't have a screen size option at my disposal here.

I'm 31, own a nice 50" high definition home theater setup and yet have no problem getting immersed in a game or movie on the PSP. There's more to immersion than just screen size. Keep working on your theory.

I don't know about other folks but I'm the kind of person who despises waiting in a doctor's or dentist's office for my turn. Case in point, about 2 weeks ago the girlfriend and I took one of our cats who had recently started whoring around with other cats, to get her sterilized so that she doesn't get pregnant. We get there and there's already 18 other people ahead of us when we take a number.

What do I do, sit there waiting, reading magazines that are probably 6-7 years old like a dumbass? Fuck no, I took out my PSP and loaded Face-Off from the memory stick. An hour and a half later we got called and took our turn.

You won't see me laying on bed or on the couch watching a movie on the PSP(unless of course there's a power outage caused by a hurricane or storm), in the same way that you wont see me get in my car to listen to music while it's parked on my garage. The point of these things like the PSP it's the fact that you can make use of all it's features like music, games and movies on the go.

out of curiousity, are all PSP movies reformatted to the 16x9 aspect ratio
as opposted to a lengthier aspect ratio a film may have? or do
some go for broke and still reformat there movies to the original aspect ratio?
(as an example, LOTR would be super thin) i would check to see if Spider-Man
2 does it but i think i lost my UMD of it...

WTF? I knew Sony was messing with theirs, but the Kill Bill package says 2.35:1 on the back.
