PS5 sales hit 4 million in Japan; unit sales are tracking 20% above the PS4

Since pretty much all PS4 games are also PS5 games so people who skipped last gen are starting with the combined library of hundreds of games. That's a great value proposition for new buyers.
Best value in gaming - oh wait, that only counts for subs. Oh wait - there's a sub too. Nevermind.

/s - seriously though, for BC consoles, when 90% of active userbase is on new console (which usually happens within first 6 months of new launch), you can take it for granted last-gen software is being bought primarily bought by new console users.
Not that PS4 software has been charting much in Japan either - but still, it makes the numbers a bit different.

That's kind of crazy given how poor they've been in Japan this generation as far as 1st party goes. I hope the test of this gen is better but they clearly have their ducks in a row enough to withstand their lackluster Japan efforts overall.

First party has actually been pretty helpful for PS5 in Japan.

Last year the PS5's top publisher was Sony themselves, with 545,581 games sold and 37.16% of its physical software market.

The switch success makes people forget what normal success looks like. Switch success is not normal.
Switch. DS. 3DS.

The Switch only seems outsized when you've pegged recent PS eras as the baseline norm and other the portable side of the industry.

The thing that's making the Switch the odd duck is the relative absence of major 3P.

Which then makes Nintendo's successes look even more lopsided.

The reasonable conclusion being one of the following two:
1. Some Japanese are scalping PS5 en-masse on the worldwide market. This conspiracy is very popular among so-called Nintendo fans a.k.a. people who went from being Sega fans to MS fans to Nintendo fans as they are finally tired of losing a.k.a. Sony haters.
2. People in Japan are hoarding PS5 for no reason whatsoever.
Occam's razor would suggest neither of these are plausible or even probable, the market in Japan atleast for PS5 software has shifted massively to digital purchases, that is the simplest explanation.
3. They buy it only to play Genshin
