Haha I think 68K is the ultimate japanophone platform. I have Akumajou Dracula for it but no console either.

Yeah, I wanted to get Dracula on it as well until I saw the price! I do love the cases for the games though, really quality, even just as collectables they look nice on my shelves!

If you would like to see a guy who can't speak Japanese try to play retro Import games and determine if they are Western Friendly ive been running a series for a while

Check it out:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL67A5B0CB96FE2470

I plan on doing more soon, ive got a number of good ones in recently I think are worth doing videos on.

Sounds like a great concept. I'll be watching for sure, I always love finding out about new import games to try out :)

That system has always been on top of my forbidden-dreams list... I love Final Fight, and having the X-68000 version in my collection/being able to play it on the original hardware, would probably complete my retrogamer's life. :D
That said - and aside from the prices both the computer and the better games go for - there's one major concern, I'd probably never manage to deal with... Floppy discs. Considering it all comes from Japan, and from an era when you couldn't really preserve this kind of stuff from humidity as much as nowadays, it all makes me wonder how long you can realistically expect especially those media to survive.

CrOsSpOsT from AV thread in case anyway carez:

Some stuff from today involving Retro + AV

Those NEC monitors are so good, ahhhh.

And off topic but since people here might care, some retro-not-AV stuff.

Nothing besides the NEC monitors were that tempting, though I might buy a Wonderswan Color since why not.

Yeah, an original hardware setup would be amazing, but I'd be worried about the discs as well. Heck, I'm paranoid about the small handful of Famicom Disc System games I got. Plus if you do have any hardware problems with an old computer... yeah I don't fancy troubleshooting that issue!

While I don't particularly like to emulate if I have the choice (the actual thing feels more satisfying to me), I am coming around to using it more and more for troublesome systems. With the right (visual) settings and controller its a great substitute, especially for MAME.

Yeah, I said as much in the thread. It's more the number of posts saying they never heard of Bonk or saying Bonk sucks.

You underestimate the prevalence of the PlayStation Generation, who may have never heard of Bonk.

People who started gaming then are in the twenties already.

I'm guessing everyone here is late twenties and up.

Gee I dunno. The dimissive shitposts are a bit much, but Bonk is an obscure property by any reasonable definition of the word. His heydays were on a platform that was a complete non-factor in the west and the series had no new releases since the 16-bit era. It's completely reasonable someone would've never heard of it, and comparing it to a far better know franchise that's still active is just inviting posts like that.

It's like , if someone made a "Monkey Island vs L'Amerzone" thread, and people were posting "what the fuck is L'Amerzone" (a game considerably more commercially successful and influential than Bonk ever was), would people be outraged and post that users on an Hardcore Gaming Forum should damn well know what L'Amerzone is?

There's far worse stuff in that thread anyway - starting with the title. There's this mentality on this forum where you can't just like a game - it has to be objectively the best/most Important/king/One True Game and any games that threaten its stature should be put down. It's not just that [my thing] succeed, others must fail.

Part of it goes back to the shitposting problem on GAF. If you really don't know who Bonk is, maybe that topic just isn't for you. You don't have to shitpost chime in on every topic.

I call it willful ignorance and laziness because we all can and do familiarize ourselves with franchises that came before we were born or were too young to remember their heyday. It's too easy now with all the Internet resources in front of us.

Would it be too mean to keep a Hall of Shame for these kind of threads/posts?

A bit, although justifiable!

That's really it. A wise-ass shitposter* could spend a minute educating himself instead of making a derail post like "who the fuck is Bonk!?" In some threads that shit gets you in hot water.

*Because that's really what it comes down to. Most of the time this type of person isn't asking to be educated. He's making an important statement that the premise of the thread is shit and the thread maker needs to be made aware what Shitposter thinks.

I blame the schools.

Seriously, though, it shows how much a Bonk Collection or new Bonk game is needed. Bonk doubled-down on 2D staples with Air Zonk and was left behind completely in the 3D era. Even Earthworm Jim made it to 3D. I can't think of another major mascot so completely left behind (Wonder Boy?). Not surprising he is mostly forgotten.

- Bonk came out on PS2 / GC as a 2.5d remake. (wasn't great mind).

If you want another equally expensive route for actual original version of FF, why not get a cab / supergun and get the CPS1 board? ;o)

I don't believe every game series needs to continue forever. The Bonk games are fine as they are. Maybe they just didn't have a great idea for a 3D Bonk and decided to do something different. Maybe they don't have a market for releasing a new 2D Bonk anymore... that's fine too. It's not like there's a shortage of good Bonk games to play from yesteryear. There are certainly series like Mario that pull off releasing great new games indefinitely but for the most part I'd rather just enjoy a finished series than watch it become something awful and busted like, uh, Sonic.

It's just... it really bothers me talking about almost anything but especially retro stuff on NormalGAF. Can you imagine a huge mass of people came in here and posted in response to ponpo's post something like "WTF why would you buy old PCs? Waste of money. Can't even play Call of Duty 1 on those pieces of junk" or "Who in their right mind would spend $100+ on a garbage 1980s PC in a language you don't understand, especially when you can get emulators for free?" Not just one person, like a whole bunch, and (not to complain about moderation but) nothing ever gets done about it. And maybe I'm imagining things but it seems like it's way worse in retro threads than anything else.

It seems to be getting worse over time too. It used to be that I enjoyed reading LTTP retro threads or weird hardware threads. But lately they're overrun by idiots or shitposting or maymays or worse.

Can you imagine if I went into every FPS thread and said "why would you waste your money on this junk?" or "WTF is a Halo?" I'd be perma'd by the 2nd time I did it. Can you imagine if I went into every VR thread and said "this doesn't look very fun." I'd get dogpiled and again perma'd. But it doesn't seem to happen for retro stuff. It's really disheartening. I'd like for a space outside of just these handful of retro threads to talk about this, but increasingly it's clear that it's not going to be on GAF.

And I'm all for having a variety of opinions and discussions but a lot of people here could do well to just stop posting so much. You don't need to chime in on every little thing. Post when you have something good to say. Recognize that some topics just aren't for you.

It'd be nice to see post quality go up but I just don't see it ever happening. :(

I think you guys are a little to harsh. Look at the bright side. People that never heard of Bonk were googling it, watching footage of it. And one guy even said he'll try it out. That's a win in my book.

Shitposting aside. Old gamers need to get used to idea that many do not know titles that are considered classics by retro community. And the best way to go about it is to encourage them to try them out. Not dismiss them through lack of knowledge. The last thing I want to see is retro gamers become elitist and hostile to the "noobs".

Just my 2 cents.

Question: Is MAME always garbage?

Like, I was curious to check out the arcade version of Elevator Action Returns, and it just feels like a shitty imitation. There's a bunch of random glitches, missing effects, dropped inputs, and the whole thing just feels kinda... I dunno, subdued. Particularly the music, which has absolutely no punch to it at all.

I'll admit, I'm only familiar with the Saturn port of the game, but I'm pretty sure the arcade version wasn't this crappy.

I thought about it, but unfortunately I can't fit such a beast into my gameroom. Mind you, if I'll ever be able to expand it, FF and Model 2 Dead or Alive will be there. :)

There's far worse stuff in that thread anyway - starting with the title. Thank you, I have been fortunate to plunder the local retro shops in Santa Monica, found a ton of old import stuff the shops were basically giving away. For example there was this one place called Hyper Game that was all about import games and they were moving and trying to get out of the game business. I just happened to get there at the right time and I cleaned out his entire PS1 section for about $60 or something like that. I came out with stacks of games I had never heard of.

Bought a PC Engine Duo R.

I was kind of on the fence about it. This is by a wide margin the most expensive retro console I've purchased, and the PC engine scene in general is expensive. Plus I don't think there are that many games on the system I'm really into.

But I managed to get a decent price and no risk of import charges (won't have it in hand until December though). And this stuff just keeps getting more expensive; if there's ever a time where I suddenly start liking shmups it'd be good to have the hardware before prices get even worse. It'll be great to have a way to play Rondo of Blood on real hardware too, and I like to think that by getting new systems I can push myself to try new stuff -- it's working so far with the 90s PC I built.

Can I ask from where you bought it?

Not in my experience.

It wouldn't shock me if Taito F3 emulation had some issues, but the music differences are probably legit. Many home ports of arcade games to CD-based systems had cleaned up/arranged soundtracks.

Not a single person read your post and had a positive reaction, they either passed by or were angered. You've also never heard of google it seems. Bonk / Air Zonk would look awesome in HD. Konami hopefully will come back to video games someday.

vOX4PqI.jpg

There's a new effort to legalize casinos in Japan. When that happens everyone will drop pachinko. Konami, unable to compete with the traditional big gambling places, will scurry back to video games. From the announcements made in recent times, I think they're aware pachinko is screwed in the nearish future and preparing to recommit themselves to video games.

This is an accurate and thorough analysis of the sitiation in those threads. I can appreciate purdobol's positive outlook, but, as I said before, a good many Gaffers are not interested in learning a thing. The extent of their intended interaction is really just this: "what the fuck is X, never heard of it, gtfo with that old shit."

Yep that is basically my impression of many of them to. The view of old games both on gaf and everywhere is just sad imo, and the perception that old=bad and not worth a damn while new=great and worth $60 is just ridiculous imo, and a huge part of this problem.

I didn't get any overt victim mentality from his post and it goes far beyond that. It's really a problem of uneven enforcement of rules and the allowed willful ignorance for certain topics. When anyone starts a discussion, you hope for a level of quality and decorum in the posts. This is tightly enforced in say... an Uncharted thread, but it's something of a shitfest if it's a retro themed thread. Look at the "lol $x00 wtf is the point" posts in AVS and Analogue threads for example. It then becomes a question of, why the hell did I bother creating this thread given the incredibly low quality of posts that flood in? That's a serious question, not merely playing the victim.

Ok, with the help of some fine fellows from Digitpress I think I'm getting closer to understanding just what the issue is with my Supergrafx - Shinobi and Street Fighter 2 also don't work on the Supergrafx, the two are two of the larger Hu Card games from what I understand, and them not working could well be a problem with the Hu Card slot pins. Not really sure what to do next, but with any luck its something I might be able to fix.

On the brighter side, Wonder 3 (Saturn) and Captain Commando (Playstation) have arrived, just waiting for a couple of other games to reach me and I'll be done with Capcom retro collecting until I save a bit more money!
Also, a nice bonus was waiting for me - my dad picked up Spider-man for the Atari 2600. I'm a huge Spidey fan and have indirectly been collecting his games over the years (still wish I'd have gotten Web of Fire before prices went way up...) but I'd never gotten his very first game, so it was an awesome surprise :)

I remember the NT thread, I was not a huge fan of the console design/price/etc myself but was constantly defending it against 'lol why when I can emulate for free' and 'WTF I can get an NES for half that price'.

Yeah, I'm less sure of how much of the music quality difference is attributable to MAME. The Saturn version sounds fucking pristine, and I'm pretty sure it was substantially improved for the home release. Donpachi on PS1 also comes to mind as a game that was preferable to the arcade release due to the arcade version sounding like a garbled mess, while the PS1 version was crystal clear.

A few games also have strange default operator settings. Most of the Williams/Midway games have very low music volume for some reason.

I'll admit I didn't know who Bonk was before the thread because I don't know much about the system it was on in general. It wasn't a major system in the UK. I did learn it got a port to the Amiga as B.C Kid which is more surprising to me that I never heard of(though screenshots did look familiar). It's fine to not know about something, it's not okay to shit on something just because of that.

100% agree on that last paragraph. I wish we could just appreciate games and not have to put them into war with each other, telling people thier wrong for having different preferences.

Been playing Paper Mario on N64 over the last few weeks and just got to Chapter 4. I don't know why it took so long for me to enjoy this game. I've had the cart for +10 years and never could get into it until now.

It's not mind blowing, but it's really fantastic and charming in a cozy comfort-food sort of way. The art style also looks amazing on the PVM via RGB.

I tried to play Paper Mario like 5 years ago, but it was simply too slow for me. Much prefer the Mario & Luigi-game on the GBA.

Thanks :) I've really reinvigorated my interest with retro over the last year or so, going after solely Capcom games and doing a in depth playthrough with each game as I go has certainly helped - as its no longer a case that I just buy stuff and they sit on shelves, as I'm actively doing playthroughs of each game as I buy them. Thankfully I'm not going as in depth with my collection as I did with Mega Man - as I got all region versions of that series, I'm just getting 1 version per port for the wider Capcom series (that would be insanely pricey!)

It is slow. But that's actually the appeal as I've learned this time around. It's a fun game to chill out to in between other more engaging experiences.

I'm also playing Demon's Souls, Rocket League and replaying the original Pikmin right now. All of these can be very stressful in their own fun way. Paper Mario compliments them as a nice pallet cleanser where you can just turn off your brain and enjoy the light story and festive atmosphere without any stress.

It's not a deep or involving game at all really. But that's also what makes it good.
