Senran Kagura: Shinovi Versus |OT| Life Returns to Vita

Holy shit. Started the Hebijo story. Shit just got real dark. This games writing continues to impress me. A lot of the motivations of the girls to fight in the present SV storylines are flimsy but the back stories to all of the girls and the interpersonal relationships between them are pretty great.

I hope Estival stories are a bit more like Hebijo (minus the dark stuff, though maybe keep one dark story). It's got the most unique story of the 4 and has by far the strongest motivation. The last chapter (but only the last chapter) of Crimson Squad is also a good example for story.

Well Gessen & Hanzo's story are like intro (and I guess they are designed to be that way).
Personally Crimson's story pretty much sums up all other 3, and the story should continue to EV.

Jeez, wish japanese games would at least consolidate DLC instead of having 40+ separately purchasable items. I got tired of dressing up anyway, I realized I was mostly using the same undergarments and just giving everyone cat/bunny ears (with only one color for each)

So, the framerate is fine for a musou?

Never noticed a dip really. I mean, the at-base performance is shit, but actual gameplay is great and that's what matters. Burst was a nightmare.

50 cents for 10 pixels? ;-/

Son, in my day we had to pay pert near 50 cents for ONE pixel. Give me ten bees for a pixel, you'd say.

Thanks for the info, I guess all that life and hometown physics are quite taxing on the hardware.

The fun thing about following little Japanese studios is watching how much shit improves. The Neptunia games improved a ridiculous amount in like 5 years and 3 games. If Estival is half as much improved as Versus is I'll be one happy camper.

Game feels so good on a DS4 Btw.

I made a joke avatar involving the head mount π-play, because the idea just popped into my head while making another one.

Also, I checked & despite only starting Crimson School, Rin is available for me to play as & customize. Don't know why people were having trouble finding her (unless they didn't install her or unlock the school first).

Edit: Xseed uploaded pictures of the hair, items, & costumes. There's suppose to be bundles for the hair (which would explain the $1.99 one) & items ($0.99 for all 3), but it seems they're not up yet.

*starts Ryobi's story* "Most breasts have milk; mine have milk & ninja power. Breast. Power source. Ever."

Oh Xseed, I swear you had so much fun translating some of these lines.

Just played through that.

Breast. Localization effort. Ever.

I'm looking at the store right now [UK] and am unable to find Shinovi Versus listed, it's not showing up under recent vita releases and doesn't appear in the search results, I wonder what's going on, the dlc is still there, but the actual game is no where to be found. D :

Umm.. so anybody else experiencing this?

Just came here to post the same for German PSN. Wanted to look what DLC was available and noticed that it was all missing (with the exception of 'Shinovi Hairstyle Set').

Edit: Actually seems like some DLC is there. Weird. No base game, though.

Same here in Ireland.

Edit: I just tweeted Marvelous AQL EU. Will post here if I get a reply.

Accidentally wiped my save of the game when I woke up this morning and my hand somehow hit new game and save (Vita was on my bed). I was at the end of the Hanzo storyline. I think I'm done playing this game.

Cloud saves? That's only like 1/6th of the game BTW

Finished all girl's stories and all school's stories. Now just the grind for platinum!

I need to do this too. I'll need a friggin step by step guide for that "be a perv in the dressing room" trophy. You wouldn't think it would be so difficult

So play the other schools!

So Marvelous AQL can still see the game on PSN, and they don't know why we can't. For now they're putting it down to Wednesday update madness. If it persists, they'll get in touch with SCEE.

Edit: They've spoken to Sony and got it sorted.

Just a little bit into the game and I can tell the localization is fantastic.

It really is. There's some oddities of Japanese speech that aren't retained (s-senpai...) but that's a matter of taste at worst, and anyone THAT into honorifics and such can tell the intent from the spoken lines since they're still japanese.

Speaking of--one thing I wasn't expecting while listening to the VA, why do they said their own (and others') so often in speech? Assuming it's just a quirk of Japanese speech I'm not familiar with. Almost all intro lines include their name for instance.

Question;

I am done with the girls individual stories and on chapter 4 of the main story for the group. It seems that the girls ninja skills are not getting better now, they are only gaining levels. Am I missing something?

Japan and pronouns don't get along well, so the Japanese language has a LOT of alternatives to using them. The usual approach is just... not to use anything, and to have the subject or object of the sentence implied through context only because PRONOUNS ARE FOR PIGDOGS.

But sometimes, especially in anime and games (and ESPECIALLY in anime and games with dialogue that's intended to be kind of cutesy), you'll hear people substituting NOUNS for pronouns. Just like, sayin' their own name instead of "I" or "me" because SCREW YOU, PRONOUNS. You ain't wanted here. ;)

I don't know if that's specifically the case here or not, as I'm not sure what parts of the dialogue you're referring to (I don't know the script to this game quite as well as others, as my role in the localization process was mostly just touch-up), but I wouldn't be at all surprised if that were it.

Man, what happened to Yomi? I feel like she got a downgrade from Burst. She has that annoying trait of doing part of a combo that launches an enemy in the air so the next attack in the combo won't connect, & her L+Triangle move is annoying to use against bosses...

Oh well, 3 more characters & all side-stories will be completed (excluding Rin).

Ah, yeah, that sounds like it. It's during the part where all Hejibo say something like "I dance for the will of evil". So I guess they're just saying like "ryona dances for the will of evil"

The Japanese are so full of themselves, referring to themselves in the third person. :p

Finally beat it. Took me about 20+ hours and that was just the story and side missions which is surprising to say the least.

Anyway ended up liking it but much like burst it always felt like it was a step away from being truly great. Crimson Squad definitely had the best story with hebijo being secong.
Hanzo and Gessen had really weaks stories. Still a good game for the vita and was really fun to play on the PSTV with a DS4.

Now if I were to be asked what improvements I would like to see some day it would be these.

-One full story rather than multiple's with only one being actually canon.
-Just drop the enemy killing nothing but a time waste
-Follow the idea of just making it a fighting game basically and expand upon that
-Depend on how things would be expanded would be nice to see levels take advantage of it. Such as destructible pieces and the like so it really feels like fights are going all out as they go on.

Obviously I know for the 3DS iterations they can't really do that, but the PSV/PS4 future games could handle that I think. Regardless of that like I said still like the series and will be grabbing Burst 2 and Estival Versus Day 1.

SK is a fighting game and a musou in 1

I'll definitely agree with these two. There's some minor fun in beating up some hoardes of the easier enemies, but when the bladed wing guys SPAWN into a super-cheap "haha you can't dodge this" attack and the ninja turtle jerks take AGES to clear up if they're blocking it just ruins the pacing of the level. And I mean, once you take those out there's no real challenge. It's just filler.

The multiple schools story thing isn't very endearing to me. Since the schools are the only source of conflict in terms of gameplay, all the stories are so interwoven that every story after the first feels derivative. If they're going to do separate schools, they should do it more like early/late crimson squad and hejibo's stories and keep them largely separate and unique, not just 4 tellings of the same conflict from different perspectives. Especially when the actual conflict is so paper-thin it's a little lame after 1 telling let alone 4.

I don't 100% agree on "fighting" game--I prefer the controls to stay roughly what they are in SK Versus, but I agree they should focus on 1:1 combat. I loathe the controls of most 3D fighting games and would prefer they keep the more brawler/hack and slash style controls.

So....Dissidia: Senran Kagura?

Though yes, holy crap at those two enemies. The turtle armor ones are even MORE annoying with certain characters like Hikage because her Triangle attack did NOTHING. So you gotta stand there, wait for them to stop guarding, then HOPE your attack will connect & not result in just them guarding again.

They're super annoying with Imu too, since her triangle attack sends you all over the damn place and only hits one at a time if you're lucky. I've taken to burning ninpo scrolls on them when possible because it saves more time than it would against a boss. Yozakura's charged triangle is very satisfying on them though.

I actually wouldn't mind the musou sections if tamsoft put at least half as much effort into them as they do the Onechanbara games.

Yeah I know that's saying extremely little, but it can be fun hacking up the undead hordes. Hell I got a lot of mileage out of those bikini slasher games just playing the survival modes. Then again those games mix it up fairly constantly. There's the regular zombies, the big guys that take a lot of damage, zombie cops that shoot at you, annoying spiders, and they're all attacking at the same time. Sure you can just mash buttons, but it's more rewarding using different abilities to deal with everyone (and take no damage in the process). Versus has 1 or 2 enemy-types going at once, and they all just kinda get destroyed(especially with rage).
If a similar amount of care went into all the generic thugs the ladies of SK fight, it'd be a huge improvement over "well this is something you do before you get to the boss...it's kinda irrelevant."

Guess I'll have to wait and see how Burst 2 and Estival Versus turn out.

Hmmm, Mirai got both an upgrade & downgrade. I feel like I'm getting more used to her style quicker than in Burst, but damn I hate her Square combos have no launcher. Edit: Oh okay, after doing her 2nd character level at Lv 7, I have some launchers by doing Squarex3, Triangle. Much better. Though I hate her dash being backwards instead of in the direction I want to go.

Also, guess I should post this here, as this was posted on Xseed's Twitter.

Edit: Oh, if you make up some kind of food dish & send it to Xseed, they'll choose 5 winners to receive the mini-figure set of the Hanzo girls that were a part of the Shinovi Versus LE in Japan. Read more about it here.

Can it really be called Musou? No gates to open, no enemy generals (just a lone, or rarely 2, bosses), no allies to babysit, no map control.

I could see it being interesting if they did something more with it, but as-is it feels pretty tacked on. It, oddly enough, works far better than it did in Burst though, I'll give you that. As is, the only thing I find kinda fun with the trash mobs is the "ring around the rosie" enemies, they're oddly satisfying to trash with wide-hitting attacks as they all rush into your attack. Them and the normal mobs that are kinda fun to beat up in a big group are okay. The bears, birds and turtles are pretty annoying at times, and the archers are just a low damage "screw you for having no ranged moves".

If they did something more significant with the trash mobs I could see it being more interesting, but as is they're not even as fun as normal beat 'em up style enemies.
