Do members from J-Pop girl groups count? I haven't really been into gravure idols since I was in High School. I liked Miwa Oshiro back in the day. Aki Hoshino was pretty cool too.
As far as I know, it's sort of like a... light erotic. Not nude, but not fully clothed either.

Yeah they're bikinis a lot of the time. Not all the time, though. There's also DVDs and stuff that show them talking and eating and acting like goofs. Some will dabble into acting or singing, but they're primarily models.
Yup, though sometimes you'll see some models come out with nude stuff, and some even jump into JAV. Although sometimes, you can tell which ones are being groomed into being porn stars.

I'm not particularly fond of gravure videos though, I like photobooks instead.
A lot of the gravure idols that I started out with are no longer in the business. They got older and either moved onto mainstream modelling (e.g. Haruka Ogawa), or got pregnant and married and disappeared from the limelight (e.g. Miho Yoshioka), or just completely vanished without a trace (e.g. Aki Kawamura).
The ones that I'm really fond of who are still more or less in the business are Sayaka Isoyama and Yoko Kumada.
Ai Shinozaki is really growing up to be very fine though, when she started out she was way too young for my taste.
edit: Also, the maintream gravure scene has changed a lot from when I first got into it, it used to be mostly fairly tame swimsuit photoshoots, but now everyone has to toe the idea of nudity. In addition idols who are openly very risque (e.g. Dan Mitsu) are more commonly accepted. Such idols used to be restricted to the nude-but-not-porn gravure scene.

I like the ones that are actually porn by the end, but not so much the ones where the girl is just kind of hopping around in one outfit or the other. I mean, I'd watch that, but that's not what gets the old boat running. If no one is having things tightly pulled up into other things, or having gelatinous ooze poured on them, or being oiled, or hiding their shame with only their fingers, then it's probably not going to work.

She won't. She's got incredible mainstream popularity, normally only those who were never popular and did risque gravure to start (Koisaya, for example) or whose mainstream careers were ruined will move into JAV (Minako Komukai, classic example).
