One of the most convoluted and confused narratives in recent memory.

A solid start, followed by the best Action RPG ever made, and then a gradual piecemeal descent into filler and totally incoherent weeb nonsense.

And probably some of GAF's resident Squeenix stans popping into your thread to screech at people that don't unconditionally love every entry in the same way they do, as is tradition.

Make sure to "watch" KH 364/2 days after KH2.
It appears before it in the collection, but that's only because they wanted to balance the content in the original releases where they where being bundled in 3s.
It was made and meant to be played/watched after KH2.

You're in for a treat.

In a good and bad way at same time lmao

Make sure to start with KH1 and then jump to Re:CoM. Just watch out for complete different gameplay changes.

Really recommend playing Birth By Sleep first, pretty damn good game.

The Kingdom Hearts games are very charming if a little shallow. The first two games lack the sense of being in a consistent world with small locations that often feel more like themed rooms. The story is also ridiculously convoluted for a game aimed at both children and adults. There are way too many characters and it gets very confusing keeping track of whos-who and what their motives are. I really do think they should have reigned it in a bit.

Personally, I think the first two games are memorable only for the Disney characters and locations / cutscenes based on the movies otherwise they feel very basic in terms of gameplay. If it wasn't for the Disney licence then I think the game would not have got the recognition it got. I really enjoyed Kingdom Hearts III though, which moved away from the small boxy room design of the PS2 era games to a more expansive design with less loading screens that really made great use of both Unreal Engine 4 and the Disney licence. The cutscenes, many based on ones from the movies including Toy Story, are superb. I also found the gameplay and worlds far more enjoyable to play even if the story itself didn't really do much for me.

The story/writing is like if you tried to distill the concept of “cringe” into a single game. It’s simultaneously so infantile that only the most shameless weeb can withstand it, while also being so needlessly convoluted and up its own ass that you need hours of YouTube videos to make sense of it.

Gameplay-wise it’s very good for a ARPG. Kind of floaty and button-mashy but in a good way. Also the gummy ship levels are super fun in my (perhaps unpopular) opinion. I wish they made a full game of that.

KH 1 looks and feels old. I couldnt finish it.

Chain of Memories kind of sucks. Loved on the GBA, but the PS2 version doesnt work with the card based battle system.

KH 2 doesnt look or feel old, and its an amazing game. Just dont bother paying atention to the story.

KH 3 is eh, but looks gorgeous. If you finish 2, go for it.

It's a very uneven series, imo

My best advice:

Ignore the story. Just play the game and have fun. If you really liked the game after you finish you will end up trying to follow the story.

The first one was great, although it hasn't aged super well (comes off a bit simple), but the rest became plagued with JRPG tropes, linearity and bland level design. The story was always batshit, and only became more batshit.

So I'd say your in for a wild mild ride that only gets worse with each new game.

Lol I remember playing KH1 in front of my roommates. There was some part where Sora is like “I don’t need a Keyblade, I have something that’s even more powerful….. MY HEART!!!”

Good lord, almost injured my ball sack from cringing so hard. Be sure to play this game in private. Treat it like a pornographic visual novel.

The game's dialogue feels like some edgy cringe Final Fantasy teenager early 2000's OC and it's glorious.

Kingdom Hearts sucks.

Built like disneyland, it leans on good artistic direction from films and such "playing homage"... And that's virtually everything it does semi-well. The fanservice can be great, the moment you get back to Kingdom Hearts characters and world it sucks.

Gameplay was always shit, as is the story. But it has managed to out-worse itself in a Nomura retcon self-masturbation effort.

It was closest to being good with KH2.

Music is good.

1, 2, BBS, and 3 are awesome games, all the others are delightfully whack though.

I primarily enjoy them for the combat, it gets a bad rap but the first game I think is still super fun to play with it's simple yet fun emphasis on parrying.

I am a huge disney fan.. bought the very first one on playstation.. played about half way and never touched it again...
bought KH3 on sale not too long ago. play up to after the Hercules area and never touched it again...

I just do not see anything good about this series.

What’re you in for? Honestly a mostly wild ride that’s sometimes weird, a lot of times awesome, and most of the time incoherent. Tip for when you get to 3, play on hard. It’s the easiest in the series. If you think you’re up to it you can jump into critical, but hard is where I’d say most should play the first run.

An absolutely wild ride. Play them in order. Embrace the madness. Don't sleep on the non numbered titles. They can be fun and help flesh out 2 and 3.
Well, play 2 before Days. Not that you can play Days because it's just cutscenes.

If you ever need a good laugh, go to a KH message board and post a message about how the plot is too complicated to understand, or tell them that something is a “plot hole”. Then sit back and watch all the crazy shit people say to try to help you understand what’s going on. You will feel like you have brain damage.

The artistic direction isn’t even what’s particularly good about KH, if you’re limiting it to one thing.

Good job speaking on a game you clearly have not played.

I get hardcore KH fans to love that convoluted shit, but if the narratives in these games were stripped down/more straightforward, these games would've been considerably more enjoyable imo

It's the type of stuff that seems deep when you were a kid but eventually grow past once you're exposed to better writing and storytelling.

Look at those passive-aggressive triggered reactions all the way down the thread. Ezekiel_ Ezekiel_ would be proud.

Also JokerMM JokerMM , play KH2 on Critical mode. That's what makes it the best action RPG ever - ultra tight game balance that makes most other entries in the genre look like a mushy grey mess by comparison.

3's Critical is decent though doesn't hit the same heights, and 1 doesn't quite have the mechanics to justify it imo.

And forget it for all the other entries - for whatever ass-backwards reason, they decided to scrap perfection and replace it with a more traditional "weaker player stronger enemies" approach, so it's not worth it.

My deepest condolences.

If you’re an adult and somehow manage to get through all of it, I have news for you: you’re a weeb, my friend.
No shut up, it doesn't count if you spent most of it taking the piss or complaining to yourself as the plot gradually goes off the edge.

...It was for research purposes! Slaying the nostalgia white whale! She said she was legal your honour! :messenger_grimmacing_

Suffers from the same issue like Mass Effect.
I loved all the games up until 3 where it feels like they stripped away all the fight mechanics and replaced them with a "Smash" to win Button as well as switching from a Disney look to more of a Pixar/Realistic artstyle which I feel also hurt the series more than it did good to it.

With how the Trailer for KH4 looked, I'm also very disappointed in KH slowly turning into a FF15/Tactics reboot just under a different Name.

What in the flying fuck is this game?

This all makes perfect sense to someone, and that disturbs me.

It's kind of like a lot of K-Pop and even quite a lot of anime fans. Comic book fans too.* A lot of young adolescent reasoning and emotion, just some never really seem to grow out of it.

*For whatever reason manga and cartoon fans seem to take themselves less seriously.

Convoluted story and terrible character action game that people try to sell as good. Combat didn't feel good in any of the games including KH3. Floaty, clunky, nowhere near as tight and responsive as Devil May Cry, Nier A, Revengeance, Bayonetta etc. Not even close to FF7R in feel and hits feedback.

Also not as good as Elden Ring combat. I mean if you are going to compare games ridiculously why not go all the way.
