Sony Computer Entertainment America to Showcase Ground-Breaking, Next-Generation Technology and New Innovative Online Services at 2007 Game Developers Conference

Phil Harrison to Open Conference With Keynote Speech, 'Game 3.0: Developing
and Creating for the 3rd Age of Videogames'

FOSTER CITY, Calif., March 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer
Entertainment America (SCEA) today announced details of its presence at the
2007 Game Developers Conference (GDC), with Phil Harrison, president of
Worldwide Studios, Sony Computer Entertainment, delivering the opening
keynote speech. GDC is the world's largest conference dedicated to the
support and promotion of game development, running March 5-9, at the
Moscone Center in San Francisco, Calif.

Phil Harrison's keynote presentation, "Game 3.0: Developing and
Creating for the 3rd Age of Videogames," will kick off the conference on
March 7th, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. PST. The speech will focus on the
key components of Game 3.0 -- community, user-generated content,
collaboration and commerce -- all highlighted through live demonstrations
of previously un-announced services and games for PLAYSTATION(R)3

(PS3(TM)).

"This is a very exciting time to be part of the game development
community. Advancements in technology combined with new consumer trends
mean the industry has a great opportunity to create engaging new
entertainment experiences for the world," said Phil Harrison, president of
Worldwide Studios, Sony Computer Entertainment. "I believe we're at the
threshold of a new era in creative game development that's destined to
drive our industry growth through the next decade or more."

Following the keynote presentation, the SCEA booth will be a central
focus at GDC as the company introduces new development tools and
technologies designed specifically for PS3 and the PLAYSTATION(R)Network,
as well as PSP(R) (PlayStation(R)Portable) handheld entertainment system.
The SCEA booth -- Booth #410, West Hall -- will offer visitors a sneak-peek
at:

Entertainment Inc., the Tuner is a profiling tool that enables
developers to quickly highlight bottlenecks and conflicts in source
code, helping them improve code performance. The Tuner is a software
application, so there is no special hardware required, which enables
developers to create high performance games with less guesswork.
-- Unreal(R) Engine 3 -- Epic's next-generation game engine technology
targets a diverse set of genres from fighting games to shooters to
Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games
-- High-Level Graphics Package -- PSSG (a PS3 optimized cross-platform
graphics engine and tool-chain) production-ready extensible scene-graph
framework that is written to take advantage of PS3 strengths
-- Pioneering profiling and analysis tools and physics technologies
-- Developing with Linux on PS3
-- Demonstration of downloadable titles from the PLAYSTATION Network, such
as flOw, Blast Factor(TM) and Calling all Cars(TM)

Strangely, the agenda included in their release overlooks Media Molecule's session, which various people have also been highlighting as a 'must-see' (well, the GDC organisers anyway :p).

Too bad almost everything's leaked as that will knock down the hype factor.

Or has it....

I have the impression that Sony will present more techinical things that games in motion...

And after all, this is the Game developer Conference and it is quite obvious, so I don't expect many new annoncements of new games.
Well, at least I'll not be disappointed like the rest of the GAF-Community.

Theyre showing PS4 already. PS3 Doom confirmed!...

Sony better own this show. They just must, karma should be on their side after 3 major failed shows...

Can't even begin to imagine the chaos that would ensue if this turns out to be a disappoinment. But seems like we know about a few things already, so I guess it can't be all bad in a worst case scenario. :p

I think we already know the announcements and they're great, but anyone expecting E3 type game announcments are going to be disappointed. This is mostly a platform announcement for services and the extension of PSN, likely along with some firmware goodies.

Well, they need to be careful about over-egging expectations. They've hinted numerous times now at something 'big' or 'innovative' or whatever, which is actually unusual for them prior to a show like this. Undoubtedly PR people are going to shout loudly about anything, though, so bear that in mind. I think they are probably preparing an interesting presentation with some cool stuff, but beyond that I'd be careful about getting excited over PR promotion of it.

Nope. It's like knowing what you get for Christmas a couple days early, but still having the rush of opening the gift and actually confirming the truth.

Plus, I'm sure there's things we don't know.

gofreak, get on it! I want Christmas ruined! :lol

PLAYSTATION HOME will be demoed behind closed doors, public receives bits and pieces.

The service itself is not started until fall 2007.

I reckon this week will mark the come-back of the PS3 after all the bad press.

But I'm surprised MS are just sitting back and letting Sony get the spotlight this week. In fact, this past week already has been constant, positive PS3 news. But we've barely heard a peep out of MS aside from those two TH screens and some memory card non-news.

I just want to see more fierce competition between the two of them. I want to see them both battling it out together at GDC.

That's what I have heard regarding the Playstation HOME service too, its disappointing, true, but we haven't heard half of what SONY have planned for PSH. The service is going to be much more vast than a room with Miis where you collect achievement trophies.

Believe.

I know. Let's not burst SONY's bubble just yet.

Apartment blocks, entire cities of people, live streaming of all media, PSP becomes the little appendix to PSH. Oh, and full-body avatar customization.

So that's what's been keeping Sony London so busy. I was told they were doing something 'epic'.

Interesting. Actually no, not interesting, exciting. Very exciting.

Services AND games...

I get the impression that going forward, the line between the two will be blurred. Think of Singstar. So I'm not sure if I'd read too much into it as far as announcements of discreet services go (although I guess we know 'home' will be announced, whatever that is).

hehe. good one.

PS Home sounds less and less like part of PSN that will be accessible at all times and more and more like a piece of software. which makes so much more sense. i get why the comparison to miis and achievements, but really this is going to be something more like Second Life/Sims Online that just happens to track your game achievements too as well as having a lot less red light district.

presumably.

As someone who will probably never take advantage of this, I sure hope its more than lip service....Nothing would make me happier than to see Sony launch a successful online (and free) network and force MS into going a similiar route.

I still remember the whole AOL-Sony fiasco...For the sake of the (sane) Sony loyalists I hope this happens, they've been kicked around enough. (Nothing brings about empathy more than being a Sega fan and Xbox owner around these parts. :p)
