Sony Sells GSN Games Studio to Scopely for $1B

The conglomerate had acquired the mobile studio after it bought out AT&T's stake in GSN in 2019.

Sony Pictures Entertainment will sell its video game studio GSN Games to the mobile gaming firm Scopely in a deal valued at $1 billion.

The deal, which is a 50-50 mix of cash and Scopely stock, will make Sony a significant minority shareholder in the gaming company. GSN CEO Mark Feldman will continue to oversee GSN Games under the Scopely umbrella

GSN Games had been a part of Game Show Network, which Sony took control of in 2019. It develops mobile and online casino games based on solitaire, poker, bingo and other games. It also produced a Wheel of Fortune-themed slots game (Wheel of Fortune is also owned by Sony).

Good get the duck out of that shit. If you own stock and get money that way instead of directly making gambling games then I’m fine. Sony dodged a bullet with even owning GSN.

Only 6b left for that Square-Enix acquisition
Nah, with less than that I'd buy:
-Capcom, ARC System Works and Dimps for fighting games, RE, MH, Mega Man and many retrogaming gems
-Quantic Dream and Supermassive for games+cinema crossmedia IP sharing related stuff and VR friendly games
-Lucid and Wushu to absorb them into Firesprite so they complete the rebuilding of Liverpool Studio, Evolution and Bizarre Creations into a single studio, opening the door for potential VR friendly new Wipeouts, Motorstorms and Driveclubs

Seems like a lot of money for an unknown company? Good catch for Sony, seems it'll fund those PS Productions movies.
They are pretty big and handle many successful mobile games that use very popular IPs. It's a good deal.

Sony should seriously just buy the 3 companies that made great traditional Playstation exclusives (espescially during ps1/ps2 era). Konami, Square Enix, and Take Two.

$229 million for Insomniac, $1 billion for a mobile slots and bingo shovelware maker.
Im not sure how much value Insomniac has without the Marvel Licenses. They dont really have any self created bangers commercially. Only reason Sony made out like a bandit, was because there wasn’t outside interest. Facebook would have ate them up if they VR games anywhere near the suceess of Ready at Dawns output.

Insomniac had EPIC aspirations. BUT.

Imagine Sony buying all these studios and you are the one getting sold.
Sony got 10% of the company. What is odd. They already handle their biggest title. Wheel of Fortune.

GSN games only has these games on the app store.

Wheel of Fortune Slots
GSN Grand Casino Slots
Solitaire TriPeaks (Top 23 in cards)
Fresh Deck Poker
GSN Casino Slots Machine Games

Scopely already handles
  • The Walking Dead: Road to Survival
  • Star Trek Fleet Command
  • Yahtzee With Buddies
  • WWE Champions
  • Looney Tunes: World of Mayhem
  • Wheel of Fortune: Free Play (Sony Pictures)
  • Marvel Strike Force
  • Scrabble GO
And they are showing impressive growth. They doubled value in a year.
I guess the company will do a better job releasing games for other properties like “Masterminds, American Says, Common Knowledge” than Sony ever would.

Sony is about to be more profitable from that 10% stake, than ownership of this developer. Seems to be a full licensing play. This is robbery.
