Star Trek Online Free to Play |OT| Boldly freeloading where others have subbed before

To my surprise when I found out you can get a free tier upgrade on the dyson science ship and the risian cruiser.

Switched to a beam boat again even though I prefer carriers just cause that t5 risian cruiser outstatted a vanilla obelisk. I need to get newer plasma beams again since all I had on my other ships were my old mk XII stf borg plasmas.

While I'm happy for new content, level cap raise and tier 6 ships, I am sad that I can't upgrade my beautiful ship to tier 6. *tear

It's refreshing to actually lose some battles now and then! I play exclusively on the highest difficulty and some of these Vaadwaur fights have been rough. They're an interesting enemy to fight with varied skills and tactics.

An increase in difficult is welcome... but some queues have gone too far and generally the reduction in rewards makes them pointless on a reward/hour basis.

I've kind of given up queues until they rollback the reward reductions. Normal should give 480 Dilithium per mission, Advanced (which was claimed to be the same as the old Elite) should give 960, and Elite should give 1440...

Played this a very long time ago and I kinda want to check it out again. Is it worth it if I'm going to just be playing F2P for now? What would be the major things I'll be missing out on?

If you last played it when it was subscription then it's got a ton of new stuff and changes that you're playing a while new game

One of the best things about STO is that (virtually) nothing is kept from F2P players that they can't earn through in-game methods. Everyone can refine 8,000 Dilithium Ore every day per player, and everyone can trade that Dilithium for their cash-shop currency at a player-set exchange rate.

The only thing you gain from putting money in is time. Everything else can either be bought with Dilithium>Zen or else for Energy Credits on the player item exchange.

Here is a matrix of the differences between F2P and subscriptions.

As Fragula said you can pretty much enjoy everything that STO has to offer without having to pay a thing. Most of what you'd spend money on are reskins of ships or some classes of ships only available using their real money currency.

Probably the most "egregious" restriction to f2p players is the most recent end game content where only certain classes of ships upgrade for free from tier 5 to tier 6, other ships require an upgrade token that costs something like $7 (though you could sell refined dilithium for zen and buy it that way). I'm sure they will eventually offer tier 6 fleet variants which would only require a fleet module you could buy off the exchange using in game currency. All current end game content in the game is beatable using tier 5 ships however.

Going rate for the upgrade tokens on the Exchange is about 13,000,000 Energy Credits. You could probably make that in short order by grinding some of the Advanced Ground missions and selling the Very Rare crafting materials.

How do I spend 13 million when it says my cap is 10?

Yeah, the first thing you need to do as a Silver player is get enough Dilithium to convert to Zen to buy the Energy Credit cap increase. It's the only essential thing for Silver players who want to stay in the game.

I think you can purchase a maximum energy credit increase using zen which you'd purchase using dilithium.

I just did that, didn't know you could do that lol. I also bought a fleet module to buy a ship, but Since I'm not in a fleet atm I'm fucked. :'''(. Add me back to the fleet gaf! I would post my name, but I forgot what the @part is lol. The first part is Jedzea.

Edit. I found it. Jedzea@Darkflow83

Gaffleet is the best fleet. I can vanish for 6 months without getting the boot. I love you guys and my fleet anti-proton cannons love you too.

So what's the new content like? Fun? How do the new ships handle? I really need to find time to get back into this but last time I logged in I had no dilithium left :( I must have spent it all.

Is there a list of tier 5 ships that can be upgraded to tier 6? What does that cost?

I've noticed the Delta Quadrent content is much more heavily focused on space encounters and the ground content is much better over all. The arc of the story kept me guessing about where it was going and there are alot of interesting callbacks.

Here is a list of upgradeable ships (and whether they are free or not)

Don't forget if you're sitting on a ton of EC, check the market for the ship tokens since they're on there as well. Last I saw they were around 13 million-ish. Just an option to consider if you got a lot of EC burning a hole in your pocket.

FYI - if you see any [CrtD]x3 [Pen] weapons for a reasonable price, buy them. They're the best mod combo in the game right now. Alternatively, you can make some money buy crafting Mk II weapons until you get [CrtD]x2 [Pen] and then rolling the dice to see if you get a [CrtD] in the quality upgrade.

"Oh no, players are grinding too efficiently, we can only let them grind in pre-approved grinding zones!"

(Delta Rising spoilers): I have to say I was not expecting
the return of those parasites from TNG, chestbursting and all.
What happened?

My understanding of it is that the Delta Rising content is tuned so that you can't level from 50-60 on episodes alone, and they either can't be replayed or don't give much reward for it. People who wanted to level quickly complained and took to grouping up and spamming Tau Dewa patrols (Japori system especially) on elite difficulty. In response, Cryptic locked out Tau Dewa patrol missions citing exploits.

Yes! I'm in Barbados until Saturday. Also wanted to see how far Cryptic went on rolling back some of the reward queue changes...

Good to see they rolled back the specialisation point removal for 'exploiters'.

Out of curiosity, were any of our members who haven't been around in a year or so but are still on GAF lifetime subbers to STO?

I'm a lifer. Guess I didn't realize it's almost been a year as I remember first leaving cause of Grindversery. But yeah I still lurk around this topic and keep an eye on the game to see if there's an update or something that looks forward to playing for myself.

So, anyone played with the new Pathfinder science ship that is up on the store? If so, how is it? I love the look but curious if it's worth upgrading to from my Temporal Science Vessel.

I love the look of it (being based on the original Intrepid design) but I'm still working through getting Starship Mastery on all of the Delta Rising Bundle ships...

So after GrandHarrier mentioned this in the Comics OT I went to try this out. Downloaded the stuff through Steam, but it wants me to sign up for an Arc account. Fair enough. I go to the site and try to sign up but every time I do I just get a little spinning loading dial when I hit the register button. I've tried on both my home and work computers, on Chrome and Internet Explorer, and on my iPhone. Nothing works. I can't even log in using Facebook. Have raised several support tickets as every time they just suggest "try again". I want to fly a spaceship around, damnit.

That sucks. If it's still not working for you this afternoon I'll ask around the forums for you.

Yeah. I tried last night to no avail so I've given it a go again now. I was attempting to go through the arcgames.com site but nothing happened. I actually just tried again on the Star Trek Online-specific section of the website but now it's telling me that my email address is already registered. Only problem is I haven't had a confirmation email and when I try and log in it's not accepting it, and when I try recovering my password it says the email address isn't registered with an account. I guess I'll just try again later, again.

Edit: GrandHarrier kindly helped me set up an account as I was getting nowhere. Tonight I will boldly go where all you lot have gone before!

Is this game still popular?

I want to play it but I worry I might be too late.

I mean it's still going along. Whenever I log in there are somewhere around 2-8 GAFleet members online. Otherwise general chat is always bumping and the game seems to be doing well for PWE so I don't think you need to worry about it vanishing overnight. They just celebrated their 5th anniversary.

They've recently launched their second expansion with a tonne of Voyager actors as voice talent, and they're still getting more actors on board for new missions. It seems to be unusual in MMO terms in that they're spending more and more money on it.
