Star Trek Online Free to Play |OT| Boldly freeloading where others have subbed before

Yeah this game is janky as hell sometimes. And yes the ships are waaaaay too expensive. Thirty dollars for a ship is crazy and that's not even considering the lock box lottery. The doff stuff would actually be better if there was an app that I could use on mobile.

I don't bother with the zen ships. Getting the event ships when they become available allows me to keep up with things while not paying a dime for ships.

Did quite well with my Breen Carrier, and now my Samsar is doing the same. Although I think I prefer carriers just cause I can sit back and fire away.

I don't really like the look of it too much, but finally getting a T6 Avenger? Awwww yeaaaaaah, time to upgrade.
Okay, Mogai-like ship for Romulans looks good. Romulans get all the best looking ships...

Haven't played in like 2 years, how much has it changed?
A lot! Were you here for the Romulan faction expansion? If not there's that and a completed Klingon faction experience, a whole bunch of new systems like crafting, weapon upgrades, a revamped sector space (broken up into Alpha, Beta and Delta quadrants), the Delta quadrant expansion with most of the Voyager cast involved, a bunch of earlier missions have been entirely redesigned, the level cap has increased, new types of Bridge Officer sub-classes and BOFF station types (Intel, Command and Pilot so far)...

At the moment we're in Season 10 of the game, with the theme being the war with the Iconians. Hop in! If you left before Legacy of Romulas there's probably more missions you haven't played than have.

We also finished the GAFleet starbase a few days ago. All that's left now is a few minor projects for NPC contacts.

One of the better ideas that Cryptic has had is that regardless of what mission you're playing, either the enemies or you will have your base level modified to bring them or you in line to ensure that you're not simply blowing through everything you see. Sometimes this can be annoying when you're bumped down because this means the loot also gets bumped down, but it just as often works the other way where you're getting appropriate equipment even though you're technically fighting one of the opening missions. You can also go back and play missions you've already beaten, albeit for reduced rewards.

Yeah, positive changes!

I'm keen to see whether this Iconian war storyline is going to end up retconning JJ Abrams' blowing up of Romulus...

While I actually like Republic society on New Romulus and how they want to overcome that Romulan-associated xenophobia we see on screen...

Undoing JJ-trek actions? Count me in!

Did they change the account system? I tried to recover my password and known of my usual emails were registered in the system. I was getting an itch to shoot some phasersin space combat but kinda don't want to if I have to start from scratch again.

Hmm, there was the shift from Cryptic's login to the Arc login a while back. I thought all accounts were migrated though.

To be honest, depending on how long you've been away you might be best placed to start a new character (Romulan's best!) just because so much of the early game has been remade.

Let us know your new character@account name and we'll get you back in the fleet.

Cryptic launched STO when they were owned by Atari. Now they're owned by Perfect World who have a cross game system called Arc which handles logins and some other bits.

At least leveling was quick. The early game for the Feds hasn't changed at all since I played lol.

is my new account. I really wish I had my old one since I had a multi-vector attack ship after saving for it for so long. ;_;

Yeah, leveling for the most part for Feds goes insanely quick. Should average about a level or insanely close per mission.. least until that awful Cardassian / Mirror Universe arc that seems to think experience is offensiveness. Though at 50+ it does slow down to something slower then usual for a Cryptic game.

Ah, see. I remember Perfect World, but when I saw the Arc branding I thought they sold it again.

I saw that as a 1000 day veteran, I could log in and get some free ships. Of course I don't even know how to play any more. lol

Ah yeah, the Vet ships. The cool thing is you'll get them on all characters, past and present. Usually what I do when I sort of forget how to play is make a new character and just get a feel for the game. Then you can always pick up the older one and see what's going on if you don't want to jump into everything right away.

Worst case if you have to start again at least GAF can hook you up. I know the fleet bank has a ton of stuff there just gathering dust.

Going by our favorite leaks site, it looks like they'll be introducing a T6 version of it soon.

I thought about talking to CS about it but I don't even remember what email I used for it and none of their recovery systems say my current emails were registered with them. So too much trouble.

I already restarted and I just hit 30 last night to get my Tactical Escort again. The Foundry repeatable and the easy farming ones that qualify have been helping me out along with the story XP, lol.

Is there any vessel that I can acquire that's better than the Steamrunner class without spending cash? What's the process of doing that?

You can get any fleet vessel spending just EC. They cost 4-5 Fleet Ship Modules (if you haven't got the ZEN version) and those were around 12m each when I last checked.
Although keep in mind that you can grind dil and then buy ZEN with it, thus not spending any real currency.

It's pretty easy to get ec in the game if you put effort. Can eventually buy them fleet modules.

Don't be like me and waste ec on master keys for lockbox lottery

Are the Veteran ships worth anything, or are they just vanity ships that suck compared to real ships?

They're alright; the tier Six veteran ship comes with a neat starship trait that boosts effectiveness of torpedoes quite a bit.

I shouldn't need to grind a ship to make torpedoes effective.

Speaking of which, I transitioned my Klink pilot raptor to a beam boat, and everything melts so quickly that I'm frankly ashamed that it took me this long to abandon cannons and torps and give it a shot.

So wait, beams are the way to go now? When I was playing in 2012, cannons were way more effective. Or is that just for Klings?

Cannons haven't kept up with some of the other adjustments that have been made in the way the game plays, particularly at range. They're actually still pretty good if you're uncloaking right on top of people and unloading with rapid fire. However, if you're fighting folks like Vaadaur that move fast and retreat to range, beams are more forgiving. It also helps that the beam bridge officer skills are lower level than the cannon skills.

However, I'm not saying that cannons are not viable. Everything is viable. It's not a hard game. But, I was surprised when I switched from cannon/torps to all beams on a whim that things died faster. It also let me free up/re-align some bridge officer skills because I don't need to make space for torpedo or cannon skills. I may give an all-cannon load-out a shot tonight for grins.

When you don't want to chase super high DPS numbers, cannons will do just fine for any normal/advanced queue. (I've personally parsed 25k+ and several others have done more). However, beams do have several edges nowadays as GungHo mentioned, so they are a bit more forgiving.

Well, I'll find out when I get to cap. When i was cap back then, cannons on escorts were the usual king of DPS. Beams were great for Cruisers since it was harder to keep the front of your ship aimed properly to use cannons over arrays.
