I forgot to mention Nintendo but they were in the ropes multiple times and had to reinvent their hardware, look for opportunities in new markets, etc.

What has Xbox done in 20 years? Gamepass? No thanks.

Comparing Sega, Playstation and Nintendo, Xbox has been the most disruptive of them all, why? Because they can. Not saying all was bad but when you do not depend on gaming revenue like the other brands, you can do whatever you want. Yes the other brands had their evil corporation moments but their limited resources kept them in check.
That is the sad part, xbox could had done much more positive things into gaming because of their resources.

You mean paid online? There was online before Xbox. The irony is that servers in that era were almost entirely P2P on consoles. If there is one thing I hold against Xbox fans is how they try to spin this as a positive.

edit: The irony now, is that paid online is what keeps Sony so far ahead in the gaming subscriptions business and one of the things that gives them such an advantage for having a larger market share.

Now, I don't mean to point fingers, but your last couple of posts have a very heavy tint of anger in them for some reason.

Let's look at it logically, these are some of the things MS/Xbox standardized in console gaming, even if they were present sporadically before.

- A unified online infrastructure in Xbox Live, which both Sony and Nintendo would end up copying.
- The first console to fully utilize HDDs and have them built in, which, again the other consoles would adopt as well.
- The first real console with a bunch of HD games. Yes, PS2 had 2, 3 games that did 1080i modes as well (eg GT4, Valkyrie Profile 2) but Xbox had a lot more.
- Halo pretty much revolutionized first person gaming on consoles. Yes, games as far back as Alien Resurrection had dual analog on PS1, but let's be honest, Halo pretty much popularized it.
- First console to have a third party GPU vendor integrate their tech, which would go on to become the norm from there onward.

Nope they weren't before anyone else. Sega beat them to it. Oh yeah broadband wasn't built in but you could get the adapter and broadband wasn't common in 1999.

Yup, Xbox wasn’t first but they refined it and set the precedents that Sony would follow. I would argue that was to everyone’s benefit even if it’s not free.

You missed the part where I said these were standardized for consoles.

The things I mentioned were either not present on consoles at all before Xbox, or were in a state of obscurity to the point of them not being there at all.

Playing FPSs on PC with mouse and keyboard since the mid 90s has no bearing on what the point in terms of relevance on consoles is.

One of the worst additions to consoles I can think of. There is nothing more souless, poorly thought out and less compatible with games than trophies or achivements. Not a single positive thing came out of it.

Honestly all consoles would be better if they were removed, devs wouldn't need to waste their time and people would play games because they like them not to get marks on some checklist that is completely worthless. Whoever came up with it doesn't understand the appeal of playing games or why humans like to do it.

They are for devs, so it already affects me even if I turn it off (I can't completely remove it unfortunately, I would pay to remove it completely as it lessens the value of games to me, I find it very invasive and distasteful).

Devs can just put whatever as achievements, can't they? Like... beat the game; finish in X amount of time; jump on 3 enemies.
About turning them off, you can turn the pop-up off, but since they're pretty much irrelevant for those who don't like it, even if they're still being collected on the background shouldn't bother you. To be fair, I don't think there are a relevant number of people checking friends achievements or trophies... it generally is a thing just for yourself (or for big achievement hunters).

If devs wanted a checklist for their games they could implement it inside the game.

PS2 also planned for this since the network adapter, although an add on purchase, was obviously able to plug into pre existing ports and the bay door was removable

They weren't first to market with a console-based online experience and internet connected living rooms had been around for years by the time the OG Xbox launched.

Accelerated the online experience in the console space, sure. Popularized online multiplayer gaming on consoles, absolutely. These things are far from innovations. Microsoft did, like Microsoft does best -- took an established trend and used their capital/resources to fast track a product to market.

That's actually a good point. On the surface, 20% guaranteed profit looks good, but if you have to wait a year to get it, and inflation is close to 10%, and then you also have to pay fees and taxes... that seemingly great deal turns to shit rather fast.

That would be so much better. They could buy Ubi, Western Division of Square and Asobo for less than half what they are blowing on Acti/Blizz and I'd be so much happier with those studios. Outside a few random 3rd parties and some indies, Xbox would have all the studios I like in their stable.
