It seems exciting and new but at the same time I still oppose it. First off there is AI automation. I have spent several years studying for a software engineering job and it would really be a bummer if once I graduate it turns out my degree is useless because AI are being used to code software. Not just that but it's going to target many fields. It's already making artists obsolete. And it's going to be much harder for the average person to find jobs because of it which could usher in a universal basic income communism type system where humans become a slave class and AI do all the jobs and maintain society.

Not just that but there's the likely possibility of a singularity point where they will become too intelligent and powerful to be controlled and start ruling over humans. Not worth it at all.

AI will replace jobs but there will be a need for humans to work that AI.

I think this may already be the case, it just doesn't look like Terminator 2 with walking destructive robots, so we don't recognize it. I'm talking about the complex system of algorithms which influence the stock market, vast data collection, targeted advertising, content offerings, etc.

I recall people who work for Google and Facebook referring to their algorithms as "black boxes" that are too complex for us to understand, but it doesn't matter because they achieve the desired end goals (i.e. more profit).

If we start to use it in any capacity it will slowly become more and more prominent as people become more comfortable and eventually slippery slope it's way into finally being given control over weapon systems. And even worse than that, it will have control over our laws which are enforced by AI robots.

This is why critique of capitalism was born from the industrial revolution. The ownership class and the workers. If 1 person owns the AI, and the AI can replace millions of people, you get the idea of why revolution would follow. Similar phenomenon with machines being owned by 1 person in the 1800s. Read up on the industrial revolution and civil unrest. Decent predictor of the future.

I can see the good and bad in it. Not much different than factory jobs becoming automated, the machines do a better job, the maintenance cost is cheaper than paying people to do the job and not all jobs can be replaced, can't call AI to fix my plumbing. My career could be in trouble (Systems Admin/Engineer) as I work on automating a lot of our systems. But as long as I'm needed to maintain the automation, I have a job. However, I don't see the US switching to a fixed income state where they just give money to people. If automation ever reaches that point, I'm sure the US would rather put limitations on AI development vs give everyone over the age of 18 a $7,000 a month allowance to keep the economy moving.

I think industries will appear that not many can conceive of at this point. Like would an early 1900s coal miner have predicted being an "influencer" would be a profession 100 years from his time? We're the coal miners in this analogy.

So much FUD around AI, and maybe rightly so considering the Industrial Revolution wasn't exactly a 100% Net Positive for the world. But us humans are great adapters. We'll sort it out somehow.
