Thank goodness no European country was in the top ten. We would not hear the end of it for 5 pages.

Still not hearing advantages, unless health care is enough for you to forego having fun and having an infinite amount of stuff to do.

You sound bitter.

Boy, it didn't seem that way when I visited ten years ago. But looking at the stats you are right.

It's European diversity. Much less integration than you're probably used to. Lots of very specific ethnicity centric areas.

both very close to 50% visible minority. they've always been very multicultural, but the asian population really exploded after Hong Kong was handed back to the Chinese in 1997, and recently the SE Asian population has been coming over in droves.

Calgary is a work-centric, poorly planned city. There's really no reason it should be on the list. You're here for the money or because you're family is here. It's only great if you have low expectations of enjoyment.

When they say Sydney, they mean only a 20km radius around it. Anything farther is a complete shithole, especially the west :lol

Well, since healthcare and infrastructure are part of the criteria, don't expect that to happen for a long time..

But even with that criteria in place Pittsburgh came out as the top ranked American city. Somehow.

London moved up one place to 53rd while Paris came in at number 16.

I'm surprised to see such a difference between London and Paris since I've always found them quite similar, maybe even with a slight preference to London (I love both, but big parks, free museums, low traffic inside the city are very pleasant parts of the London life).

As for the top 10, I've only visited Vienna as a tourist but wasn't really thrilled by it. I intend to visit Finland and Canada soon, though. :)

Nice view, but if I lived there I would fear to have it blocked in a few years by new buildings like the one on the right...

Nope. That section is an area called Gastown. It's mainly protected historic areas (cobble streets) and requires a lot to get anything built there and except for Woodwards building you see infront of you, nothing tall is being built.

The last two months in Calgary have been so bitterly cold that I cannot fake a smile for its position on that list.

Pittsburgh wat.

Top U.S. city? I don't really follow these lists, but doesn't Portland usually take that award?

Also congrats to Australia cleaning up. I heard you guys have a poisonous frog infestation or some shit but other than that you seem pretty cool.

I'm always surprised to find out I'm already in the best place :p

Well as I've always said, Vancouver is the most peaceful, safest place I've ever lived. Beautiful sights. And general multi-cultural harmony.

On the other hand... night culture is pretty.... enh. This place closes down too early. It's also expensive.

I'm glad to consider it my home base... even if I travel elsewhere.

Sydney?! Sydney shouldn't even be anywhere near that list because of its terrible public transport system.

YES! Right on. The multi-cultural harmony is my favorite part of this city. But the city does close down too early, especially the skytrain. Before I moved downtown, it cost me like $50 to cab home after a night drinking. If they really want to cut down on drunk driving, they need to keep skytrain open until 3am. At least on the weekends.

Australian frogs are cool.

Cane toads are fucked-up, but more a threat to wildlife than to humans. And, in turn, humans are an implacable threat to cane toads: cars, cricket bats, golf clubs. The culture of cane-toad extermination was pretty goddamn strong when, I suppose, most of AUS-GAF were growing up.

Definitely. I'm not willing to pay the $50 cab ride, so that means I NEVER stay out until last call, etc :(
