PC: Fallout 1&2, no contest.

Console: Hmmm this one is harder, but I'd probably go with Tales of Destiny 2. Then again, there's Valkyrie Profile, BOF5, Persona 2 (or the half that we got of it, anyway), and FF2 (pure nostalgia there, I'll happily admit).

Mario & Luigi: I forgot about this one. A fun and humorous adventure. I decided that the final boss was too cheap, so I never finished it, but what I did play I enjoyed immensely. Unlike the other Mario RPGs, this one actually had some challenge. I appreciate that.

The final boss, cheap?!?! You need to make some drinks, and use them during the battle. It'll make it easier for you.

There isn't anything cheap about the final boss. You simply have to follow the patterns.

Anyways mine are:

Paper Mario
Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga
Crono Trigger
Suikoden I/II
Dragon Force

I guess this is considered a spoiler...

Knocking your HPs down to 1 and then attacking you a bunch of times isn't cheap? I'm sure if I kept playing I could learn the patterns, but I didn't feel like fighting half the battle a bunch of times until I finally got the pattern. From what I read, the ending was nothing special, so I just decided to move on to another game.

FF12 is looking good, other than the pansy of a main character.

"KOTOR - Best RPG ever"

I'm playing this now on PC, and it's kind of laggy. Not just video, but also controls. I'm still early in the game though.

What kind of RPG is Shenmue? At least in the tradtional sense it isn't...I dunno.

Anyway, I see a lot of Panzer Dragoon Saga's on people's list. Too bad that game is going for over $100 on ebay. I hope Sega would consider giving that game a remake. I don't see why they shouldn't seeing how that is considered one of the best RPG's of all-time...and probably the majority of people have never even played it. Imagine what that game could do on the PS2/XBox/GC for sales...

Straight-RPGs:

1) Wasteland (Apple ][/DOS/C64)

2) KotOR (XBOX/Win)

My favs have been:
FFVII
FFVIII
Grandia II
Skies of Arcadia
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance

I have a ton more in my collection including KOTOR and Panzer Dragoon Saga but I just havent gotten around to them yet.

I think my all time fav is FFVIII though. I had such a good time with that game. I loved the card game in it. And I really enjoyed the characters.

Talking console only:

KOTOR
Panzer Dragoon Saga

...not necessarily in that order.

I've tried other popular RPGs and usually come away unimpressed -- FF7, Lunar, a couple of others did nothing for me.

I've played some PC RPG titles along the lines of Ultimas and Baldur's Gate, etc... but not to completion. I've got Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights waiting to be installed right now, actually.

the best console rpg series i can think of in terms of quality among all the games is definitely phantasy star. even though a lot of people don't like phantasy star 3 as much as the rest of the series, it's still a really good game.

the next best is the first 2 lufia games, both of which were on the SNES. don't bother with any other lufia games beyond that as they all suck.

and after that there's the dragon quest/warrior series, which i like a lot (especially 1-3 and 6).

but you're doing a disservice to yourself by not getting the fallout games ($5 each if interplay is still selling them), planescape: torment, and getting some abandonware versions of really old school pc rpgs.

Yes, I do realize that some of these games may be listed in the incorrect generation. That merely means, as in the case of the Lunars, Grandia, Skies of Arcadia, etc, that I got later upgrades/ports of them, not necessarily the original releases. Yes, I the distinct lack of later Chrono and Final Fantasy sequels is not an oversight in the least. I own them, played them, and disliked them. Mostly.

Those aren't just the ones I own.

Those ARE my favorites from amongst all of the RPGs I own.

Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen (I need to find the PSX version of this)
Vagrant Story
Fire Emblem
Final Fantasy IV
Xenogears
Suikoden II

I am forgetting some, but I think that's good enough for now.

I enjoyed most of RPG's I've played over the years but the following are the ones that stick in my mind as the best of the best-

Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy 6
Final Fantasy 7
Suikoden 2
Mario RPG
Grandia
Skies of Arcadia
Breath of Fire 3

Beyond those I can't think of any role playing games that I truly enjoyed however the following are RPG's that I thought really sucked or were overated

Breath of fire dragon quarter
Legend of Dragoon
Chrono Cross
Vagrant Story

Recently I've been playing KOTOR and it seems pretty good but I've not finished it yet so it isn't on the list.
