Love this old stuff.

People have no idea how magical this time was before the internet spoiled everything and before pretty much the internet was able to be so damn cynical.

You had to wait for a magazine to come out unless you actually went to the convention shows which was pretty damn magical of the time given the industry was still throwing we were having press conferences and things are really excited that we weren't has immediately available.

It's just something you can't bottle and sell. Those are things you had to be there for like the next few magical years for PlayStation where new hits and groundbreaking IP's we're coming out monthly.

IGN (back then it was called N64.com) had full coverage online from Spaceworld that year.

I think Ocarina of Time was the peak game for what you are describing. There was an internet, even gaming sites with primitive video coverage, but not like it is today. I feel like the cynicism really came in around the 6th generation console wars. DC vs PS2 vs GC vs Xbox was like an online world war that changed the character of the industry forever.

Before that, you just had the magic of game fandom. Everything was still mysterious and interesting and hopeful. 3D was still new, and we were living through the design decisions that would define the rest of the history of gaming - getting that third axis right in how games can play. In fact Nintendo was actually a big part of that trailblazing with games exactly like Ocarina of Time. So it was just a really fun time to be a fan clued in to what's on the horizon, before industry info became so ubiquitous that we all ended up jaded and defensive and unimpressed and the magic was largely gone.

This was a time and place thing and it will never happen again. Be happy if you were around for it. You were one of the lucky ones.
