I think my review isn't going to sit well with the majority of people, at least as far as this thread goes. Though I hope to articulate my points well enough why I think this is an extremely solid game aside from a few choice things. That way you can at least know where I'm coming from concerning this game and my appreciation for it.

Anyone have any tips for that challenge when you have to take down a Horned Demon only when it is frozen? I've seen some tips but I'm just not having any luck here at all. It's the Possessed Citizens that are driving me nuts since they just keep getting in the way.

What I found was to use the
void variant of the mist. Pull out the sword, mist, hold x and move around. I tried to get some of the citizens before hitting the demon so that they would get frozen and not interfere.

Yeah, I've been using that move, but it's just not working out for me. I either miss a few and they proceed to gang up on me.

The key to it is patience. If you see one of them getting close, just call that freeze a no go and clear them out. In order to not complicate things, I always just used the standard whip combo for both dispatching the citizens and damaging the frozen guy. Otherwise I found myself doing something I didn't want do and hitting him. Luckily there's not many challenges tougher than that one.

Yeah, I think what's making this so much more annoying is that I exit out and restart the game so I don't have to start again with no magic left. I doubt they'll patch anything for that but I dearly wish they would.

It's definitely the hardest one thus far. Some of the others are annoying, but not this bad.

Seriously? That was one of the least painful ones for me.

Freeze him, then jump, and use the R2+Square Flaming Claws move once. Rinse and repeat.

In other news, I finally got the LoS1 platinum last night. Only took three years!

Wait, which move are you talking about? The Chaos Mist move?

Edit: Ha, got it! Just did the Chaos move in the air where you hold square down. Now on to the last set of challenges! I hear the Paladin one is annoying as hell.

It's the only hard one left. The rest are piss easy.

Any tips for the one with killing 5 undead in the air? I'm using Void Kata to get them all together, but can't seem to transition into the air fast enough.

Edit: Actually got lucky with that one. Now onto the Dark Monk challenge.

This game was, on the whole, awful to me. If you can't deal with that opinion, then that's your problem.
That door swings both ways you know ;-)

This thread reminds me of LOS1 thread and more recently the Tomb Raider thread.....both of them.
Although I have to agree,
Victors death
was lame, but the game is still fantastic and I loving it, story wise though LOS1>>>>>>LOS2.
This is my biggest complaint thou?
It feels like the end of a story with more to it, as if this isn't LOS2 but LOS4 or 5
It's like they are wrapping up stuff that hasn't happened
I really think more games leading up to this should have been made, that's not to say it'll makes the story any better, the story could be much better but it does feel like they just skipped
to the end

What's with breaking his joined sword? I read a tip to hit him with Chaos Bombs to break it and sometimes it works great and other times I'll hit him with 3 with no effect.

3 hit combo with the chaos claws is more reliable. Just make sure he's not doing any attacks while trying to break his guard, his hitboxes are fucking bullshit, and he kills in like 2 hits.

They all do massive damage and I'm not confident I can get that 3 hit combo, but I'll try that out.

The worse part is that I managed to get all the Warriors killed only to have that joined swords part screw me over.

Anything with Mercury Steam on the box will never get my money.

I adore LoS1 and venomously hate Tomb Raider 2013. Polarizing games, indeed!

Man, I haven't been this mad while playing a game in some time. What idiot designed this challenge? And the targeting system for that matter which insists on targeting the Paladin when I'm not even facing him?

John Harker

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
Well at least we can all agree on one thing... Dracula controls like a dream. So good.

Great camera too.

Hmmmm. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

That ending.

It's like we get the point that Gabriel wants his suffering of immortality to end. And yet in the end, it's like he didn't even care anymore. So....what the fuck changed his mind. Alucard being there now makes it all better? Satan should of just not existed at all. Fucking Zobek would of made a great damn final boss. That Death fight was pretty damn cool. As for the whole section with the Toy Maker. It's like they got some part so right and yet other parts so wrong. Development hell from what we've seen with the ego man. Goddamn this game has some huge huge potential and they fucked it up so hard.
Meh. Mehhhhhhhhhhhh!

Just finished the train segment, awesome part of the game. The miniboss design and the fight itself on the train were one of my favs. "I'm the only one who gets to live forever!"

Just finished the game. Hated the stealth segments like everybody else as they are mostly trial and error. But their impact on the enjoyment of the full game have been grossly overstated. I mean, is there even one stealth section that can't be completed in under a minute ? Fuck all the reviewers that crucified the game because of this.

Loved the boss fights, the combat, the environments and the graphics with full camera control (take note God of War), the atmosphere and the music. Now the story bits that bothered me:

WTF @ Victor's death. Yeah you are the leader of the Brotherhood and leave the fate of humanity in the hands of the person who destroyed your clan! And that ending was lame. I fully expected Dracula to hand over the Vampire Killer to Alucard for him to finally die. But no, let's hang out and get some shawarma. Plus, Satan's been working out. I kinda expected to have another battle with him after defeating the possessed Alucard. Meh.

Overall though, I loved the game. I realise I might be in the minority, but i honestly thought it was better than the first. A few frustrating bits that don't deter from the enjoyment of the game, LOS2 gets a solid 8.5 from me. I really hope that MercurySteam isn't done with the series. And if so, then fuck 2D Castlevania, Lords of Shadow is the right direction for the series. I hope the game is a commercial success. Next gen sequel please, Konami !

This, I 100% agree

Well folks, here is my video review for Castlevania: LoS 2 Overall, highly enjoyable game that brings the combat back (but enhanced) and story continuation from the first, yet changes some core fundamental things from the previous game. Gone are the stages and chapters that are in line with something like Super Castlevania IV's map layout and progression. Now we have one massive enviroment and open exploration more like SOTN. The game also takes place at night completely, another huge difference from the bright and colorful vistas from the first. Its easy to see why some folks feel extremely off put by this entry. I am in the minority of that thought, and really loved the differences this game offered in comparison to the first. My biggest gripe, as every else stated, the stealth. Get that outta here! Def looking forward to the DLC.

I will be interested in seeing what kind of Castlevania game we get next. I hope the series continues on. At this point it's been like THE series to look forward to personally and I'd like it to stay that way.

Agreed, Lords of Shadow is the right direction for the series. I really hope it's a commercial success and MercurySteam reconsiders doing a sequel. Just learn from your mistakes and move on. LOS3 on next gen could be a real masterpiece. About the game exclusively taking place at night,
in the ending, Dracula kinda hints that he can't stand the sun as he tells Alucard to hurry because the sun is rising.

Really lovin the game, I hope Konami continue this series style but with Dracula/Gabriel being the baddy now his story is told, and introduce a new ascendant
Hopefully they don't back to those god awful dated 2d metriodvania type and put the series back in its coffin like it was before LOS if MS don't continue developing them.
I like you.

Oh and I mastered the whip, thankfully you don't have to do ALL the attacks to get mastery points needed to level up.
The whip is the only weapon I mastered lol.

Well 1 item left to find in the Castle areas and then I'm gonna go search the modern setting for the remaining items.
This game has waaaaaaaaaaaaay too many upgrade collectables, they're really not that needed ugh.

1 item left in Downtown...20 items left in Science District and 10 items remaining in the other areas each.
Gonna focus on Science District tomorrow.
After getting all items I'll finish up the challenges then beat the game.

I figured as much as it does makes sense (Dracula and all). I just think for some folks, the difference with grand daylight stuff in the first game,I bet it throws some people off.

A few impressions:
  • Mist form sucks compared to Laura's in LoS1
  • Too many enemies with shields
  • Holy shit at the
    Carmilla boss fight finisher
  • Void Sword/Chaos Claws upgrades are rather expensive
  • The castle looks amazing, both exterior and interior. I wonder which real-world castle comes closest to its size, complexity or general style and architecture?

By the way: The number of collectibles on the world map - is it the total amount for each area or just those I am actually able reach with my abilities? Because I'm quite sure at least one of them is different from yesterday.

Did people actually question that? Seriously? He a Damn vampire FFS lol
Also
also about him not being able to take out everyone easily in the present day, there a part when Dracula leads one of the bosses to his Castle through the time portal, doesn't that pretty much explain he isnt as powerful in the present

I like you.
thank u, but its true
As much as I like the series, I can't go back to jump whip side scrolling with up beat in 2014.
Series reboots have been painfully bad in most cases and Castlevania is one of the lucky ones that has had a good comeback, its a shame some fans don't realise that, flawed or not.

I think it's more of Dracula drawing power from his own castle. Which is why we get the hint from Trevor before we meet up in the past.

Other than that, there were some pretty damn cool moments with the game. The battle of the demons with Dracula, Alucard and Trevor. So so good. The Toy Maker is probably my favorite part of the game. The way the story is told through puppets. To the point were we get to meet the Toy Maker. I actually felt really bad for the guy when he started to realize who Dracula was. So terrified that he just stands there crying. I really enjoy the game. Just that ending. Ughhh!

Oh and that third Acolyte. The faaaaaaace.

.

It's not so much that he can't take out those guys with weapons, but the fact that he takes on much more crazier and insane bosses, only to later be stuck having to sneak again. Am I really supposed to believe he can take on an Acolyte and then not a dude with a gun? It just doesn't make a whole lot of sense. They should have kept the sneaking stuff to early on to give that element a bit more punch to it. I will say the two areas sneaking that made more sense in my eyes was the Argues and Camilla moments, with the Camilla one being my personal favorite. Overall the sneaking moments are few and far between and not a game killer in the slightest. Knowing the solution the second time thru, makes it even easier.

As far as it being night, it's not that I question that notion at all. Yet you have to agree, visually, it changes things in a big way from the first. I don't personally mind the night aspect. I just can see how others might disprove of the change. Hell I even enjoyed the majority of the modern sections visually, just a few areas that seemed lackluster. Otherwise I found myself stopping and looking around constantly.

Interesting review JPC. I enjoyed your style. I hadn't seen any of your reviews before.

Thanks. I have a small following on gaf. I had a lot to say about the game. Im a bit worried about sales and the series continuation, but I got my fingers crossed.

DJWest, anything coming out in the future will not be made by mercurysteam. I believe someone said the Revelations DLC is being made by a different team.

I just hope the DLC after the first will give us a different ending of the sorts of give us more closure. Or a hint of a new game. Something!
