Week of March 24th to the 30th, 2014.

Fighting Games Weekly is the weekly discussion thread for all things fighting games. News, events, streams, videos, players, drama, everything fighting game related.

Don't know what to watch right now? Check the FGCPros Twitch Group or Jaxel's Stream Viewer. If you want to watch multiple streams at once, you can use Jaxel's customizable multiviewer as well.

New to FGC-GAF is the FGC-GAF Index which lists the fighting games GAFers plays as a neat reference with some rough statistics to boot. To add yourself to the index, quote this post and use the survey link below. Please remember to save/bookmark the "Edit your response" link so you can edit your responses if/when you buy a game already on the list or a new game that releases in the future.

Last week's thread. An archive of previous FGW threads is available here.

Every week, FGW will spotlight one GAFer to get a better picture of their history with fighting games, their preferences, and much more. For this week's FGW Player Spotlight, we will be taking a closer look at our local vampire saviour, Rotanibor!

What fighting games do you currently play, what are your all time favourites and why?
What I've been playing competitively lately has been Vampire Savior, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Melty Blood, and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Three of those are at Rebel Up and one of them is at Geriatric Warfare, and all of them at Super Arcade in SoCal. Casually I'll play a bunch of different stuff, mostly on GGPO in my spare time. The past month or two I've played some Ninja Master's Haoh Ninpou Chou, Vampire Savior 2, Savage Reign, Vampire(the first one), Real Bout Fatal Fury 2, Waku Waku7(barf) and Galaxy Fight(barf). Some of these I play for fun, some just to learn them.

My all-time favorite fighting game is Vampire Savior, which I think is legitimately one of the best fighting games. No other game can match its pacing and speed while retaining that level of spacing and footsies. In addition, the match is never really over despite how bad it may look. If you play hard enough you can come back from some of the worst situations.

My second favorite is Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars. Game feels incredibly smooth and has a good spacing/footsie game for a versus fighter. It is also where I got my competitive start in fighting games.
What are your favorite mechanics from the current selection of fighting games and why? What are your least favorite and why?
One of my favorite mechanics is baroque from Tatsunoko vs Capcom. It is really an ingenious use of red life. The free cancel is fun and the fact you get bigger damage from burning a large amount of red life really makes you think how you want to use that resource. Another mechanic is one that a lot of other games try to copy but in my opinion never get it quite right is all of the stands from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Heritage from the Future. There are actually several different types of stands types, and all of them are handled really well.

I could probably list off a bunch of mechanics I do not think to highly of, but I’ll just focus on one for right now: extended combo systems. I am honestly sick to death of long combos. Being taken out of the game to hit someone for 30 seconds or to be hit for 30 seconds or longer is incredibly unappealing to me. I am much more impressed by displays of execution in the neutral game, on offense or defense, which is something you’ll see a lot of in Savior. I really don’t see fighting games as being about showing how long you can hit your opponent for (with a few exceptions).
What got you into fighting games? Are there any other genre of games you play?
When I was younger the idea of being at strong at fighting games really appealed to me, but I wasn't in the position to go to an arcade then and didn't have many friends that played. When Street Fighter 4 originally came out I saw it as my chance to finally make good on that dream, and played online for a while. I did well enough online against other scrubs but it was pretty obvious to me that I didn't really get what was going on when I played anybody decent. My motivation was starting to drain but then Tatsunoko vs Capcom UAS released. Honestly it’s a considerably easier game than SF4, and was a good fit for me at the time. It clicked and I played competitively up until the release of MvC3 which ended up killing the SoCal scene despite how strong it was before that. Thinking about it, the SoCal TvC scene itself is probably one of the biggest reasons I stuck with it, as I was able to approach them easier at the time than most of the Street Fighter players. At this point I consider them some of my best friends.

A lot of my focus these days ends sticking to fighting games while I have been neglected other genres, which mostly due to my community organizing efforts in addition to playing simply being too involving. When I set aside time for other games, I usually play whatever Nintendo has released lately, sometimes RPGs, sometimes random indie games I downloaded from steam.
What is your favorite fighting game character and why?
Typically what I'd describe as my 'favorite fighting game character' would essentially be which character I find the most fun or satisfying to play. My favorite character from Vampire Savior is Zabel, landing his unblockable is extremely satisfying, he has tons of different movement options, and using all of his 30(yes, 30) different normals is incredibly fun as they all have different uses. I really like Ippatsuman in TvC, as he is an incredibly dynamic character with strong normals and fun air to air game. I also kind of find it amusing when people are pushing buttons at bad ranges against SFA2 Ryu only to see them burst into flames because they punch a red fireball, so you can add him to the list.
Describe your style of play, and how do you play (local, online, etc.).
My style of play can greatly vary dependent on the type of game and I try to mix it up a bit to keep myself evolving as a player. I guess I could say what I go for usually is trying to play a strong neutral game until I get that one opening and then press the advantage... though really that just kind of sounds like how you're supposed to play fighting games to me, haha. One specific style I have ignored is the pure grappler archetype. For some reason it’s never really appealed to me.

Most all of my playing is either at Super Arcade, playing with some friends at my house, or on GGPO. Most of that time being spent on GGPO and after that playing at Super Arcade. I used to hit up Family Fun Arcade(did a ton of TvC and Vampire tournaments here) and Japan Arcade(briefly) before they both closed.
What do you feel are your biggest strengths and weaknesses as a player?
I consider myself a relatively strong player. I think I am strong in core areas such as reactions, anticipation, spacing, and execution. My main weaknesses I believe are that I can have trouble adapting on the fly, sometimes getting nervous in a tournament match, and having a poor endurance.
Best and worst moments in the your fighting game career?
A victory I had as a player about 4 months into my competitive career was getting 9th place at EVO2k10 in Tatsunoko vs Capcom when it was a main game. I'm proud of that placement, but it is slightly bittersweet in regards to being so close yet so far from top 8, because nobody ever knows who top 12 are. (It was me, RyRy, FrankieG, and TrueGamer tied for 9th if I recall correctly... Just so you know who top 12 was, haha)

As a fan the biggest moment for me was probably at the first SoCal Regionals. I wasn’t really too into Vampire Savior at the time, but I was a big enough fan to bring my PS2 release with me with a copy of Vampire: Darkstalkers Collection in hopes that I could get Sako to sit down and play a few games with me. Sako did show up, and the dude played Vampire Savior with me and a couple others for 2 hours, maybe even longer. It was a pretty amazing experience, and I probably would not be nearly as active with fighting games otherwise as he showed me the true greatness of Vampire Savior in that time.

This is more of a general thing, but as community organizer my best moments are when people tell me they really enjoy the events or tournaments I put on. The feeling of being appreciated means a lot to me. Every year I tell myself I don’t want to host the Vampire Savior tournament at EVO again next year. But someone always tells me how much they loved the tournament and thanks me that I can’t resist doing it again. I even had someone from out of the country tell me that the Vampire Savior Tournament was their favorite part of EVO, which was really incredible for me to hear.
What do you want from future fighting games?
I'm not too confident at the future of fighting games in terms of releases. 2014 looks to be a big year release wise, but the majority of games coming out doesn’t really appeal to me. What I want from the future of fighting games is for focus on the past of fighting games to emerge. There are a TON of fighters that didn’t even get the attention they deserved back in the day, and for most people playing these would essentially be a brand new fighting game. I think there are certain things you can only find in old fighters at this point, and they don’t seem to be coming back.
Who should be on next week's GAF Player Spotlight?
I’ll go with Tizoc, from what I've seen he likes a lot of cool games and I want to hear more about them. Gotta push that old game agenda!

I guess you guys watch team PIE streams for different reasons than I do. This sucked for me. I waited weeks just to see a random chick cast a party-wide dizzy spell on the entire session. I got one Smug match. I don't even think anyone's taking any of these matches seriously.

Great read Rotanibor. Nice to see others that appreciate old man games as well.

Also, I never really got a handle in TvC as to what Baroque was, but it sounds like X-Factor at the expense of your red life (in that you you get a Roman Cancel and a boost).

It's cause they're all drunk. Tiffany being there/leaving wouldn't have made a difference on the matches or how they're commentated.

Is there a schedule to this stuff, event names, descriptions, etc.? I don't just throw everyone who streams fighting games in the OP, there needs to be some reliability in timing there, or else it isn't very helpful.

Was more pointless FGC drama really more noteworthy than a major title releasing this week? Oi.

Also, seconding this from the interview:

Wasn't really pointless, it's a legitimate issue if TOs are allowing people to manipulate brackets without the consent of all of the other players in the bracket. Imagine if this becomes commonplace (or is already) and people are doing this to get whatever matchups they want. Can drain the community of competitiveness or sponsor interest if this bullshit continues. A far cry from "drama."

I honestly have completely lost track of what is going on with BlazBlue and I don't think I'm alone. People who aren't actively playing it have no clue what 4 letter acronym is the current version and what the difference between them even is.

That might contribute to why bracket drama wins out over major release.

Yeah, but bracket fixing happens all the goddamn time. We talk about it every other tournament, and we'd probably talk about it every tournament if people cared enough to tell us it happens via twitter. It's common, and I don't get how it's especially newsworthy over a new game release.

But he plays Tatsunoko vs Capcom.
I main Marvel, and I hate long combos. Sometimes you just have to eat bad meat because it's the only meat you have.

I couldn't agree more. It's the reason I never stick with marvel. I want to play it but I hate the idea of long gaps of nothing but memorized buttons presses. I take nothing away from landing said combos, setting something like that up takes real skill, on top of having the nerves to pull it off in a live match. I prefer games where combos are short and you get back to the part I think: thinking, the meta, getting ready to react.

edit: on another subject:
quoting this for posterity.

Nice spotlight this week.

I have to agree with Rotanibor's feelings on long combos in fighters. It's definitely one of the things I'm not really fond of in Marvel and Skullgirls. Even though I like the games a lot, personally they end up being less fun for me because of long combos.

Not even in the slightest. I can't think of any other time we've talked about it outside of LI Joe doing so to make ECT hype, and even then there was hardly a discussion around it. I think your claim of it being common is fairly unsubstantiated too, even if it may be the case. The news certainly didn't translate as a common practice at least, or else you'd be hearing tournament regulars saying how it's not worth mentioning because its commonplace. Even stranger to me is the idea that it's not worth noting an issue because it's commonplace.

Plus, it was the wittier title out of the two.

As far as I can tell, it's only newsworthy because two drama-prone individuals were at the center of it this time.

For some perspective, up until very recently (either this year or last), the official rule regarding bracket floating at Final Round, posted in plain daylight on their official website for the whole world to see, was simply this: "No floating shall occur in top 8 unless all remaining players agree." That implies that (1) floating can occur before top 8, and (2) not all the players in the bracket have to agree in order for it to occur before top 8. Current FR rules have nothing regarding floating one way or another, which essentially means that it's up to the whims of the staff.

If you want to "fix" this, then start (respectfully) directing your concerns toward the TOs right now instead of just bitching about one player or another for taking advantage of it. Don't mistake this post as a justification for the status quo, either. I'm just putting this out there for people who may not have known.

I'm here to tell you that pretty much all of your assumptions in this post are wrong, although I suppose the degree to which this is common depends on where you draw the line between "floating" and "re-seeding." EDIT: And maybe in retrospect this statement is a little too presumptuous in itself.

At any rate, one of the Cannons, in an interview about EVO in the past few years, even mentioned that while they don't float after the start of a tournament anymore, that it's something that other TOs handle differently on a case-by-case basis.

Baroque is just a cancel and a damage boost relative to the amount of life you burn, and doesn't last longer than a moment if you are not currently hitting the opponent. So basically its something you use mid-combo to extend what you are doing, or to make something you are doing safe, or as a tool for a mix up.

Is there a schedule to this stuff, event names, descriptions, etc.? I don't just throw everyone who streams fighting games in the OP, there needs to be some reliability in timing there, or else it isn't very helpful.

If you like me for that reason then I probably like you too. :)

But he plays Tatsunoko vs Capcom.

Tatsunoko vs Capcom is pretty much right at my threshold. I'd argue that for the most part combos aren't usually too long, but there are definite offenders in the game. Something that saves it for me, is that Megacrash is so prevalent that with proper meter management you really won't be combo'd all that much at high level. In either case, my enjoyment from TvC isn't really about combos, and more about how fluid movement is and enjoyable the neutral game is.

For full disclosure, there are a couple games I enjoy that have long combos, and partially because of the combos, like JoJo's and Hokuto no Ken, though thats mostly because I find the combos hilarious in them. Besides that I still like plenty of other things about those two games.

Yeah they clearly were all just drinking/having a good time. It's just how it is now, more about the drama and who's the best than just grinding out matches for Street Fighter's sake. I have no issues with it really, but anytime a woman is involved with the FGC dudes act like they've never been with/around a girl before.

I'm not seeing where our posts contradict, as I acknowledge that in the case it is true, and should someone substantiate those claims, I don't get how this makes it less of an issue when it provides benefit to whoever wants to swap placements in the bracket but not to everyone else. It's fundamentally unfair. Don't agree that it shouldn't be discussed only because top players brought it to light. I know some people don't give a crap about tournament logistics or even question how much this matters as far as implications on the communities go, but I'm curious why it's not worth talking about at all.

I can write up something for Rebel Up streams in a moment, since I am one of the organizers there.
This would be great, but it needs to be super, super short, like a sentence. Look at the ones in OP for example.

SixFortyFive responded to a lot of what you said, but I'll clarify one thing: I don't think I said the drama wasn't worth noting. I just think it's ridiculous that it takes precedence over a new game release.

Rotanibor interview was pretty good. Makes me kind of (but kind of not) surprised how TvC isn't at Rebel Up or anything.

I held it at Rebel Up once several months ago, and once just a week before SoCal Regionals this year. I'd hold it more, the the mains problems are that: I need another CRT as mine is pretty much dedicated to Vampire Savior, bringing 2 extra sticks and the system with all the equipment I already drag to Rebel Up would be hard, Rebel Up is packed full of waaaay to many games now, and am not sure if I could consistently get the current players down for it.

I run JoJo's with Savior because there is a lot of cross over between the two interest wise, and I can run it easily on a monitor and there are already systems, with sticks, I can run it on.

I need to get a Wii HDMI adapter(some work surprisingly well), and see if that helps make running TvC any more practical for me, but really I need someone to help me run that game if I was to actually start doing it.

This would be great, but it needs to be super, super short, like a sentence. Look at the ones in OP for example.

Hahahahaha, sorry it was so long. I'm a pretty detailed person with a lot to say typically.

Especially Marvel, I remember playing at my friend's house and I didn't get a chance to play because I was playing against a friend who has a lot of experience in marvel than me. And I never landed a hit on him...I felt embarrassed for getting exposed.

Last time I played that game, out of supreme boredom, I played my friend Rikir who did like Tron combos that lasted well over a minute on me... My boredom was not alleviated.

I also agree long combos suck, except for in Marvel where they give gratuitous opportunities for players to be creative, do crazy custom combos and be super disrespectful. That's a big part of what makes Marvel great and wouldn't be the same with short combos/strings because of the narrower room to do anything cool.

But I can see it being a problem for some people watching Marvel though, especially when things become optimized and combos standardized. Creates redundancy in viewing. Marvel probably has the most intense neutral game because of the pressure not to get caught in a 30s ToD, but once someone gets caught, it's a wrap and any excitement from the neutral gets drained right away. Double edged sword that is more often for the worse, and is even worse if you're used to MvC2.

Skullgirls combos can have this really annoying rhythm to them. I can't really single it out, but it's a bunch of factors like the hitstop and sound effects that altogether make the combos feel much longer than they are. Because of hitstun scaling and whatnot though, they are much better length-wise than Marvel combos. Somewhere between MvC2 and SG is the sweet spot for me.

Nice spotlight this week.

I have to agree with Rotanibor's feelings on long combos in fighters. It's definitely one of the things I'm not really fond of in Marvel and Skullgirls. Even though I like the games a lot, personally they end up being less fun for me because of long combos.

It's funny looking at the kind of team I played and enjoyed most in Marvel (Viper/Dante/Strider) and realizing that most of the aspects I liked about it came from the neutral, pressure strings and the freedom in movement and confirmation options. I realize now that I really wasn't a fan of the crazy long combos outside of pushing development of the team forward. I kinda wish if someone would make Vampire Saviour with assists (not even tag characters, just assists) for this reason.

Just a note, I won't get around to updating OP proper until probably Saturday at the earliest with the new weeklies and stuff (I noted your update, Busaiku), as this week is insane for me school-wise.

One essay due Friday, first complete draft of my thesis and poster on Tuesday. This next week is hell.

Ok someone sum up whatever dumbass drama happened while I was too busy playing Dark Souls 2/visiting family in Chicago to pay attention.

Basically, Champ is a dick, right?

100% agree on this. Actually, I think MikeZ is looking to shorten Skullgirls combos a bit more.

I agree with the rest of your post, too, but that part stands out for me.

sanford smashed his stick at NLBC

full schedule said that fchamp and neo were going to play each other at final round, but they got floated so they wouldn't have to

some people called fchamp out on this, then fchamp went on a big stupid rant attacking the people who called him out

In terms of combo length, GG's perfect for me in terms of "anime" fighters that have some sort of hitstun decay. Standard BnBs are super short, and even the meter ones aren't that long. Vampire Savior and MvC2 are my favorite for ones without that mechanic though. Long combos are still possible, but really hype to watch and hard to execute.

But yeah, definitely a fan of short combos
