Man, over 2000 posts in two and a half hours. I'm surprised this game garnered so much attention in the first place; are people that starved for PS4 exclusives?

I think he did it in his quick look video. But I know for a fact he's partial to the FH model, which is great. But maybe he shouldn't have been to the one to review the game. Or at least think of other people's tastes before setting the verdict in stone.

Giant Bomb makes absolutely zero pretense about doing "objective" reviews. They are arguably the most up-front site about how everything is subjective, and they provide enough content for people to gauge what a particular reviewer's tastes are.

It wouldn't really matter who reviewed it at the site, they pretty much unashamedly don't take other people's tastes in mind. Their reviews are simply that reviewer's opinion, nothing else.

The more I read reviews, the more I really think Ready at Dawn severely dropped the ball. I mean reviews talk of a mere handful of different enemy types, in a third person shooter. Yikes:

Enemy variety feels absolutely dismal in so many big-budget games, especially shooters. The Last of Us only had five or six different enemy types by my recollection, as did Gears of War. Bioshock Infinite might have had six or so enemies that varied by palette swap. Halo, even, seemed to have less than a dozen enemy varieties stretched over a 10+ hour campaign.

If a game chooses to only have a select few enemy types, they can at least make up for this lack of variety with other entertaining gameplay mechanics like platforming, puzzle solving, exploration etc.

I'm still looking for one other PS4 exclusive to justify my purchase of the console. I already have Bloodbourne, but I think it'll be sad if I buy the system to play one game only to leave it to collect dust for months afteward.

Reviewers continuing to be harsh as fuck this gen lol. One thing I did not expect to see was "bland gameplay". Does that mean that they're suggesting that shooter wise, Gears of War was significantly better? I won't truly know until I play this one.

I've been saying that forever! <3

That's where I really want to see a new dawn of innovation in... game writing. It's in an apocalyptic state right now sadly. If so many developers are going to focus on cinematic/narrative driven titles, then it's time to go through a writing boot camp.

To be fair a lot of films aren't that much better these days.

What I don´t get is why they didn´t take any of the criticism from the various hands on events into account while still in development.

The negatives in the reviews are exactly the same I´ve been hearing about for the past year or so.

It´s also the same experience I had over half a year ago.

Wird.
It always seems like they're too far in to make major gameplay changes besides tweaks and bugs by the time they have builds for the public. Maybe they think a different crow of reviewers will be less harsh around release.

Except for momentum breaking QTE's, come on, any dev should know we just don't think this is cool anymore.

No one has it out for Sony, holy shit, do you guys who type that stuff realize how dumb it sounds? You're actually hurting the game's case. If you still wanna buy it, then buy it and play it, do you really need the validation to do so?

I have never been to that site before or watched their videos, but after this review and their video review, I'm hooked!

Cool, enjoy :) Their podcast is pretty excellent. I also thought Steve Burns review was really good - man know's his stuff - but I'm not sure much of GAF agrees!

Damn, I thought this would get straight 7's. If there's a sequel I really hope they aim for bigger scope, co-op, and multi, I'm a sucker for this style of game.

Sony tends to get -2 review handicap because they don't strong arm publications and don't have the money to sweeten their relationships with them. Then there's the fact that they tend to be very hands off, and use their IPs as loss leaders. If they're not, all the better.

EA and Ubi have the deep pockets to market a mess of a game and find friendly eyes at the big sites. Not everyone does though. A better context would be they actually get a +2 handicap

When has sony used an IP for a loss leader at release? Is this game not 60 dollars? What are you talking about?

If they gave away this game for free, at launch, on like ps+ or something...sure. But this is a fully priced product. And "tends to get -2" handicap? What?

Idk what im even doing, this is gonna be like convincing a blind person they can actually see.

You ever play Planescape: Torment Amir0x? We really do need better writing in games, because a good narrative can prop up an entire title.

He was the writer most invested and familiar with the genre. The review was fine, and he justified his points well enough to justify them to an outsider. The game has quality problems, and hobbyists have expectations.

A company being excited for their new game is a huge slap in the face to all the fans that liked their old games.
Most impressions from GAFfers that I have read (including my own) who played it at various events were super bad.

I knew what was coming.

To be fair, I don't know where all the "drinking the koolaid" shit came from.

Now, onto The Order...

Not a good demo. Maybe I didn't "get it" because of the noise in the crowd and the feeling of being rushed as you stand in the demo station, but it all boils down to it being a game that doesn't demo well in those circumstances. It's also very cinematic heavy, with frequent pauses and on rails sections. This is one of those divisive games for sure. You're supposed to sit back and relax in the comfort of your home and take it in. But from what I played, I don't think there's much to take in, gameplay wise. It was very by the numbers and very constricted, although I can confirm the controls are tight and it plays well. For all the touting of soft body physics the game's graphics are not the centerpiece at all, since it's all so funneled and small scale, at least in the demo. So yeah, perhaps playing a different section in the game would change my mind, but from what I gather, it's a narrative heavy game. I'm hoping that aspect holds up and carries the tidy, albeit functionally familiar, rest of the game.

It was pretty clear this game was gonna get slated. That being said, I'm enjoying my time with it, but mostly from a cinematic and graphical point of view.

Titanfall isn't an exclusive and sunset overdrive got the exact same scores as Infamous.

Yes, but it isn't on Playstation. I have a PC and got to play it, but many console-only gamers did not. I think it counts.

Also, Gaf's adoration notwithstanding, both Forzas have wiped the floor with Dirveclub when it comes to metacritic.

I am not trying to start some console battle lol. Like I said, I don't own an Xbox One and do not regret my decision to buy a Ps4 as I believe within a year or two Sony will be crushing it. But right now I think Xbox edges it.

Right, I go to GB FOR the personalities. I want objective reviews because I like the guys a lot.

And how exactly does one write an objective review based on their opinion of something? Does not compute.

These scores are very disappointing. Lots of 5s and 6s. I'll wait for the price drop.

Welp, saved me $60. A shame it isn't as good as we were all hoping. Still, I want to give it a shot at some point and form my own opinion but do not want to risk it at full price. I'll be renting or buying at a sub $30 price instead.

Based on the reviews it seems like one of those situations where devs got so ampped up on graphics that somewhere along the way they forgot people actually have to play the game.

Again it proves my long held position Gameplay > graphics. I can forgive an ugly game that is fun to play, I cannot forgive an pretty game that is boring.

This shit should be bannable.

I was going to say, most film storyline are easily as eye rolling as the average video game. At least with games the consumer has more control over their experience.

Man, that's three in a row for Sony exclusives. The last good one (at launch) that they put out was Last of Us Remastered last summer and if you ignore that its Infamous Second Son from last March.

Question is how well this game performs and what Sony and RAD try to do to salvage. #DC has been pretty successfully turned around with constant patches, new features and new content (both free and paid). LBP3 is, well, its getting occasional patches and paid costumes (I want them to fix the half gig save file on PS4 but that might be a pipe dream). I don't know what Sony and RAD can do here. Free co-op horde mode? Maybe free single player content?

I hope Bloodborne is amazing. I got burnt with these three.

Lighten up, some of you. These are videogame reviews. Not the UN trial committee for war genocides.

Probably just as well for Burns then. Heard he had a season ticket at The Hague.

I started the game yesterday night, I played it for nearly 3 hours. I can't really understand the big drama ?

It's a cinematic action game. It's gorgeous (at least to my taste), the victorian setting is pretty cool (again my taste). Is it revolutionary ? No. Does it have sophisticated gameplay mechanics ? Nope.

It's a competent pop corn game. I say "competent" because it hooked me the right amount to play it again tonight. In fact, it's very much like going home after a solid work day and sprawl on the couch watching an action flick while eating a pepperoni pizza. Nothing more, nothing less.

Big difference between building off of someone else's greatness and coming up with your own.

True, but I don't know if world building is the issue here. The world of The Order seems super interesting. Feels like RAD decided to make an interactive movie instead of a game.

The Jeff Gerstmann review was eye opening.

Only two boss fights and they are basically the same. Forced stealth sections which are not fun. 6 hours with looking around...
This game is such a waste.

Enemy variety don't be a problem once the AI good and you get weapon variety to mix it up.
Seem this game has a problem with that..

I really wanted this game to be better than this, mostly because my girlfriend was looking forward to it. As it is, she's a seasonal gamer and would likely wait till near Halloween to play this anyway.

We just moved to a new city, so it'll be a while before things get boring/de-angsted enough to just chill at home and play some games.

Still, though...we were really hoping this would turn out better than it looks like it did.

To be fair, what was driveclub and what is now is like sun and moon. The game really needs to be reviewed, because its a solid 8.5/9 now.

It's a really surprise that RaD screwed so hard with this game. They even had help from Santa Monica Studios, so literally 2 devs worked in this game, what the hell happened?

And yeah, Sony needs to stop being so soft with their 1st party and funded thirds.

This has definitely slipped from day one to rent later. Disappointing.

Reviews don't dictate how well a game will sell. In this day and age they are only hate/fanboy fuel on message boards.
See destiny, watch dogs, ...
watchdogs had good reviews..

.

Seems to be a trend with Ps4 exclusives.
Killzone and Infamous felt the same way (though not quite as bad as the Order in terms of value)
