The Order 1886 Review Thread

they should look into reviving Eight Days or the Getaway. i thought they cancelled ED because it lacked online capabilities so how was The Order given the green light? its been a year+ of mediocre exclusives from Sony and its time that they go back to the drawing board.

Well this year is off to a bad start for them, but they have many more coming down the line. They still have Rime, Ratchet and Clank, Bloodborne, Uncharted 4, No Man's Sky, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture and a bunch of others. Will see what the rest of the year brings. 2015 seems really stacked for them.

Definitely triggered Poe's Law for me. Good work.

Absolutely not. At least that's not what I am reading.

Critics don't like big AAA linear story-focused games (Ryse, The Order, ...), and they usually like multi-centric arena games (TitanFall, Evolve, ...) and love collect-a-thon open world fedex games (SoM,AC,DA,...).

This really is a trend that I have seen more and more clearly, in the press and among players alike. Like a trend there are exception of course, but it's still a definite trend. I fear this may actually sign the slow decay of those kind of games, especially if reviews end up reflecting on sales.

How The Order will chart will be quite interesting to see, and may have huge consequences on the kind of AAA games will get in the future.

And yet in spite of this wrongly assumed bias The Last of Us reviewed exceptionnally well. That alone throws a wrench in your theory, I'd hazard the guess that the game didn't review as it did without its fair share of good reasons but you will naturally conclude otherwise. It's telling you are trying hard to rationalize The Order's dismal reviews to avoid conceive that it may be not nearly as good as you want it to.

TBH I "trust" reviews way more than I trust user impressions. We already have GAFFERS declaring this game their GOTY while waiting for their copy to ship...

I'm with you there. I've never understood the argument of "screw professional reviewers, I trust the opinions of amateur anonymous people on the internet way more."

Can't say I'm surprised, people expected this to review well just because it's pretty. But a game's most important factor is replay-ability. Unless the Order was basically the best interactive movie you had ever watched it was never going to be an average over 7. Gamers have a certain expectations - devs who want to make an interactive movie should try to price it correctly and provide it to a wider audience via netflix/amazon.

I'm certain there are people who will still enjoy it, but next time don't kill the messenger

I don't get it....

Why spend so much time and money on cutscenes when you can probably make a few more levels in the same time with less people.

With regular map you have no need for new voice overs, one time use animations, new effects and camera proof visuals.

Such an odd decision.

So it would have been better off to rip out all gameplay and just have QTE do you(or anyone) think and make it more of a Quantic Dream type experience?

I got no idea, I haven't played it yet myself. I heard the gunplay had some meat to it, so the Telltale/Quantic Dream comparisons never really made since to me. It sounds like gameplay is in there. Till I see for myself I can't really judge whether it would have been better served to remove the gameplay, my initial assumption however would be no. I like Telltale/Quantic Dream's games as well, but I don't think that would have improved people's opinion on this game. Hell might have made the reception even worse.

Whats that got to do with reading impressions from people who played the game? I've got a backlog at the minute which looks like it won't be getting any bigger but I will keep an eye on user impressions for the future.

I struggle to trust reviewers anymore, some are completely jaded or looking just to compare stuff with their favorite thing instead of looking at something objectively in isolation. I had had believed reviewers I never would have got Driveclub and wouldn't have spent hours playing it,

My GOTY is Destiny BTW.

Major new game, retail release console exclusive Metacritic scores since launch scoring at least 80/100

MS = 86, 86, 81

S= 83, 80

Not a lot to choose from...but if one wants to argue tiny details, he's right.

Now with personal preferences we all may agree or disagree. That's not an argument based on #s though.

There's already a list and as I said again, it's equal to me. Having one more game does not mean that they are so much different. It's still personal preference at the end of the day but it's still equal. We aren't counting numbers of games.

I would hope this means we see more "AAA" console games that launch at the $40 price point, but I fear this means we are only going to get more $100 games ($60 + $40 DLC/Season Pass) even if they launch completely broken or are built around future DLC. It seems like very few points are deducted in review scores if your game is broken or literally unplayable for weeks or even months after launch. The Order looks average (aside from the gfx) all day every day, but the range of review scores should only further highlight how meaningless and arbitrary they are. I hope to see us as gamers and journalists break free from the shackles of review scores this generation. You can read any of those reviews in the OP, whether they are a 9 or a 5, and anyone with half a brain can deduce, "rental or much lower price point" is the verdict on this thing. Why do we need a number associated with that?

Damn, I didn't expect it to do this bad.

As I said in the impressions thread, I am so freaking glad I finished it before the reviews hit.

Based on what?

I own a PS4, and I'd be lying if I said that XBone hasn't had the better exclusives- By a country mile.

As a PS4 owner myself, I concur (though maybe ot "by a country mile"), neither outputs are stellar really.
This wasn't necessarily true before FH2 and Sunset Overdrive, but the XBO has those.

Imho:

Good or better PS4 AAA exclusives: Infamous 2nd Son (+ First Light), Driveclub (now), TLOU (remaster), MLB 14 (with some online issues I read)
Average PS4 AAA exclusives: Killzone SF, Little Big Planet 3
Mediocre at best PS4 AAA exclusives: Knack, The Order 1886 (or so it seems, might be average when all is said and done)

Good or better XB1 AAA exclusives: Forza Horizon 2, Sunset Overdrive, Titanfall (also on PC)
Average XB1 AAA Exclusives: Halo MCC (remaster - should definitely be "good" once all fixed or so I read), Dead Rising 3 (also on PC), Fantasia Music Evovled
Mediocre at best XB1 AAA Exclusives: Ryse (also on PC), Kinect Sports Rivals

The saving grace of the PS4 imo (for now, the future looks quite a bit brighter) are the indies like Transistor, the F2Ps like War Thunder (and MMO with FF XIV), and ironically that its exclusives are not "also on PC" for many.

Now about The Order, it looks like fears are mostly confirmed and that it is the "Ryse of the PS4". I honestly don't care "when" it releases (whether it's 15 months late or whatever), I just think that both RAD and Sony should have had more ambition than that for the title.

Might buy later at a discounted price, as the audiovisual presentation and atmosphere look to be pretty amazing.

Add Uncharted to that list as well

Neither output is that good, but lets not act like one of them is doing much better than the other

Both consoles only have 7 games? What a shit gen.

Not picking on The Order specifically, but how can any game be your GOTY without even playing it?

I'll probably wait to pick this up, can't quite justify full price. I am interested to see the visuals though.

This thread has entertained me and saved me money.

I know this may sound strange but works of art which are universally praised kinda rubs me up the wrong way I mean pleasing everyone is a bit weird right!I Know I'm grasping at straws here but respect to RAD for creating a piece of art That's so polarizing and maybe that's how it should be done

God damn it, sometimes I hate being right when it comes to predictions.

*sigh*

That said, Shu really needs to reevaluate the games that they greenlight. Even during the PS3 era, a good chunk of their first party lineup mainly consisted of shallow, but pretty experiences which don't quite fly in this day and age.

Looks like we have a new Shadow of the Beast.

Loved for the graphics, badly reviewed for the gameplay.

Will still get it because I love cinematic, atmospheric stuff.
