Xenoblade 3D |OT| Is that a Monado in your pocket or are you just really feeling it?

As to the bolded, I never really agree with this for any game, (it's just something apologists say to get people to keep playing a game they like imo) but I specifically don't agree with it regarding Xenoblade. If the opening of the game, up to and including Gaur Plains, doesn't drag you in, then you most likely will never, ever like it. Nothing particularly interesting happens 20 hours in to change things at all.

The first time I got to Gaur Plains the game had already secured 10/10 GOTY masterpiece status for me. If you're disliking it at that point, well I'm afraid it doesn't get any better.

I agree fully with this. Honestly, if you dont jump off the city first chance you get, or the second you realize this game doesnt have the invisible walls, the bait and switches, the interesting areas on the backdrops for looking only aspects of most other jrpgs, and just jump off the city into the lake and coasts and islands and caves of freedom, and you dont immediately just love the crap out of excersizing that freedom, by exploring this gigantic playground that just happens to be the first area in the game, and seeing enemies that are blocking access to areas, and maybe trying to sneak past them, or making mental notes in your head about how you are going to come back when you are ready. Then this game is not for you.

If you really like that, but feel the combat is lacking, keep playing you wont be dissapointed. This game has a wide variety of foes, including optional superbosses that will make very good use out of the games well varied combat system. But building those skills, empowering the party, does take some time, but it will get there, and it will regularly keep dropping yummies to keep you mentally engaged, while trying not to unload so much at once as to be overwhelming and immediately forgotten.

If you really like that, but want to know about the story as well, keep playing, you can pretty much advance the plot at will, as long as you traverse the distance, and most people enjoy the story, even if its just the surface layer of the story, and feel its pretty good, so you probably wont be dissapointed.

If you dont give a shit about that at all, and just want to b-line straight to where the arrow is pointing, to get to the next cutscene until you beat the game, why are you playing this game? (Why are playing games at all?) Watch the cutscenes on youtube. The huge draw of this game, is completely unappealing to you, and you really should look for something else before dropping money on this game.

Man, I haven't played the game yet but why do I get the feeling that you just gloriously spoiled a major plot twist? :/

Nah don't worry. Was just trying to make the case that the story isn't as generic as the first hours seem. Whatever you're thinking it's probably not what actually happens :) The game has plot twists all the way up to the very end.

Yeah, Gaur Plains and the sequence leading up to your first visit to it is the point where Xenoblade makes it's "case" to the player. Although I have heard a few people say that the
Eyrth Sea + Prison Island
arc is where they really fell in love with it.

I think I'd agree with both, just to be difficult. As I experienced it, the game world and mechanics make their case during the whole opening section and Gaur Plains. I remember being impressed with the size of the environments and charmed by what was an enjoyable if straight-forward story. Then there is a second phase at
Prison Island
and beyond in which the tea table is properly upended for the first time and the story really gets its hooks into you.

Playing in and around Colony 9 was enough to fill me with anticipation and I enjoyed every new area. I have to agree that if you get to Gaur Plains and you're not really feeling it then then the game probably isn't your thing. I spent hours just exploring the plains area.

Granted, I played the Wii version back in 2011 (?) so I don't know how much of a difference playing it in 2015 on a less powerful handheld would make. For me Xenoblade is one of those games that stick with me as an experience. I had to rip myself away from it sometimes. It was strangely nostalgic and fresh at the same time. I can look back and admit it wasn't perfect (some of the quest stuff could be polished) but it sure felt perfect when I was playing it.

Yea i meant arts not skills.
I'm a player who hates Messing up builds and such, it Stresses me out thinking i invest points into the wrong arts.
Will i be a able to max out all arts or do i have to make choices?

I just wanna reiterate that this is game's city-locations are basically Majora's Mask x10 in scale (though of course not as detailed and focused for that reason). You can spend a loooot of time just walking around town(s), getting to know all the named characters and then coming back around in a circle to the same spot at a different time of day/night and finding a whole new group of NPCs there with stuff to say, quests to give.

Don't ignore the people. You can pick up (and miss!) a TON of quests in Colony 9. The affinity/NPC sidequest system is deep.

edit: oh and also, I added a Beginner Guide to the OP last night.

thanks! this make things a lot more convenient!
One more timesaver you'll want to know about in advance: please note the "Area Maps" icon at the far left of the menu you get when you hit X. You can use that to pull up any map for an area you've been to and instantly warp to any of its Landmarks (unless they're unavailable for one reason or another).

I didn't know this when I first played the game. I knew I could warp to Landmarks on the map I was currently on by pressing the Minus button (presumably Select on a 3DS), and thus instead warped to the Landmark at the border of the current area, so I could manually walk into the next area, and repeat that process for every area in between where I am and where I want to be. I didn't learn about the jump-straight-to-the-Landmark-you-want feature until Eryth Sea, which doesn't have any exits of that nature for me to walk through, necessitating its use. I wasted a lot of time up to that point.

Nah don't worry. Was just trying to make the case that the story isn't as generic as the first hours seem. Whatever you're thinking it's probably not what actually happens :) The game has plot twists all the way up to the very end.
Seriously. The game has plot twists falling out of every orifice.
There's even a decently-sized one in the ending.

On the Wii version, I played up to
Prison Island
, which took maybe 40 hours. I assume I was halfway through the game?

I think I will start over on 3DS, since it's been a while and I now know that most of the side quests are not worth doing.

yeah you can max out all arts eventually, don't worry about that

although you still shouldn't throw all your AP towards stuff that you don't plan on using

Jump off the city?

Jump off of everything.

If there is water below you so you dont die, or you think you can jump far enough to reach water, it is your duty, honor, and privelege to jump off every damn thing you can.

Besides, you can just telport back up to the always nearby landmark to do it again, or move on.

Advice:

Accept every sidequest you come across. Don't go out of your way to complete any of them. Just complete whatever comes naturally through exploration and the main story. That's enough EXP and rewards to keep you ahead of the curve.

Gaf I need help:

I just redeemed my code for the game on the eshop (UK here) and got the free theme. It came up with the code and said to redeem now, so I just pressed that rather than writing it down. It then said the software needs an update, I hit OK and it then said there was an error and to try restarting my system before trying again.

But the theme isn't in my available software to redownload. Also checked purchased themes in the theme shop and it's not in that list either. What's going on? How do I try redownload it?! Console is currently in sleep mode downloading the game itself...

Did they mail you the code? I don't even know where to find mine!

This is the most important advice. Otherwise it becomes "why are there so many fetch quests" the game.

Crosspost from my other thread. Is my PS3 with a bunch of games I don't care about a worthy sacrifice to get that extra bit of money towards a New 3DS for this game?

I mean, normally I'd wait for an eShop release of the Wii game on WiiU to happen, but I don't see that happening because of this port. And I'd rather not buy a scalped copy on eBay for $100.

Don't sell a PS3 just to get a New 3DS. Just wait until you have the money to buy the system without selling stuff.

I totally did not spend 15+ minutes just jumping
and dying
around the colony areas and exploring everywhere.

I love how I can just explore around and put the story on hold.

Hah, I was with that mentality when Xenoblade Wii came out and I was short on dosh at the time and inbetween jobs.

Then the copies became rare and the price jumped to around $120 IF you could find a copy for sale. Not falling for THAT again.

On my regular 3ds in the eShop. Got Dayum, the music it is playing, what is this!? Amazing music, just listening to it on a loop right now. Reminds me slightly / strongly of panzer saga music.

Read the OP now too. Ok Xenoblade... you have my attention.

The game is available digitally. It can't run out. And if physical is that important to you, just buy the game sooner and the system later.

No digital version drove those prices up though.

Selling your PS3 lets your explore an entirely new library. So if you feel that's worth it then I'd say sell it. That is if you don't already have a regular 3DS though.

Keep us updated! There's nothing I love more than seeing people's reactions to various story scenes.

Oh and to add to your earlier question. There's pretty much no way you can screw up in this game other than missing out on certain quests, locations, and uniques and the game even goes as far as to mark those quests for you. So in other words... Experiment!

Will do. But i'm a lazy poster so don't expect too much.

Gotta say, this game is like a weird child between jRPGs and wRPGs. Love it. And since it was on unimpressive Hardware like the WII they said "Let's make it as big and impressive as possible because fuck the haters."

Can't wait to play more tomorrow.

It's OK. They actually spoilered that one in Japanese commercials for the Wii version. It's also in Smash Bros haha. Just stay away from wikis from now on! And YouTube comments. And fanart.

Yeah, Chuggaaconroy's playthrough is 49 hours.
Things get really interesting around the 20 hour mark from what I hear.

My favorite modern RPG so far has been Ni No Kuni, so I cannot comment on Persona 4 much, ha ha.
Chugga did pretty much almost every side quest that doesn't have to do with post game (that Will be in later videos), he's playthrough had no choice but to be in the hundreds, the difference chugga cuts out alot of unnecessary fat, he has great pacing for his LPs.

Don't ever check wiki on a series you haven't completed.

I really need this game to stop zooming into the faces. The detail isn't there.

Completely takes me out of the wonderful music and game when I'm forced to look at the zoomed in faces with their soulless eyes.

I do that laugh where I slightly exhale everytime it happens.

Other than that, I'm loving it so far.
