DOOM Gameplay Demo (E3 2015)

I dunno. I'm getting DOOM 3 vibes. Do they not know what makes DOOM?

I feel the same. Reminded me of Doom 3. Didn't give me OG Doom vibes AT ALL. Similarly, I don't understand the hype that came out of Quakecon last year AT ALL. People really like gibs, I guess.

Answering both questions, something more like this

Now, i liked what they show but i needs me more speed, less corridors and more enemies.
Probably i'll wait until the final version for a final opinion, but so far i liked what has been shown.

needs to be more arena like(open) and far more enemies. On a plus side the gore seems to be bang on.

And I'm sure the speed and level design can be fixed as well. If you think about it, they showed corridors to make it more concentrated for an E3 demo/gameplay video. Even if they have the levels open to the point of Doom 3, then it should be fine. But yeah, they have time.

why does the second video look so much better than the first?

the gameplay in the first video looks like a shitty mix of doom 3 and halo but the action in the second video actually looks pretty fun and awesome.

those indoor areas look like early footage or something

From what we heard about Doom at Quakecon last year, they may be re-using the footage from last year (or at least going through the same areas).

In the post show interview they said the first demo was the second area of the game while the Hell footage was about halfway through the game.

Shooters really haven't seemed to progress in the last 15 years. Graphics have improved though...

They've gone backwards is the problem. As far as gameplay goes you are never going to get much better than CS 1.6 / Quake, and there's nothing wrong with that those are 2 phenomenal games, the problem comes with the developers thinking that press x to start an instakill cutscene is actually good gameplay.

Pretty sure that 4 player DM was a "mod" or custom gametype emulating original Doom, not standard gameplay. Because that MP trailer seemed to have slowish movement speed as well.
I may be wrong though.

Are you joking or is my sarcasmdar broken?

Just IMO, there hasn't been much innovation in single player. Linear/scripted levels, little AI improvement (if any?), emergence holes/monster closets/spawning enemies, etc.

I'll be pleased when I see someone playing and running at 70mph without having to lower their gun.

The first video is from a year ago, guess the second is more recent.

I want to see the receipts. I'm having a hard time believing that some of the movement in those demos wasn't faked/on rails.

While I have some issues with things, I overall really enjoyed both demos of Doom :D. The visuals look really good, mixing Doom 3 with elements from prior games (which is very smart, considering this is going back to the roots I assume).

The gameplay was interesting, as it seemingly is blending the modern with the old, kinds like how the PS4/X1 Wolfenstine worked; some modernized mechanics but still having that 'old soul' which made the original game such a classic. The weapon wheel, what seemed faster movement speed, the modding-esc support and the gore factor hearkens back to older shooters, and that is awesome to me :D. The map editior really impressed me, as this is going to work on PS4 and X1 in addition to the PC version; the closest thing to mods on home console....and that rocks :D!

My only issue is that the level design for the single player levels seems to be liniar and small, but this is only a demo that we saw, so that could be improved with time.

Considering what this game was originally going to be (another CoD-esc shooter if those rumors/reports are correct), I am very happy with what they presented today, leading me to have high hopes for this to be a fun summer game for PS4, X1 and PC owners :D.

the weirdest thing is that the movespeed in the MP clips were like nearly 2x as fast as what was demoed and a lot more "doom-y"

what the hell was up w/ that? i can't imagine that speed being designed for maps styled in the vein of those shown in the demo - it's way too fast for 'em

I don't know what it is, but something about this game in motion gives me weird like claymation rock video from the 90s vibe.

It looked like doom 3 which is ok but not worth all the hype we heard about it. Where are the scares? Brand new and unique enemy designs? Faster pace and new stuff?

Didn't feel the gameplay at all. I was fine with the double jumping and ledge climbing, but there were so many other things that bothered me. Enemies drop health and random ammo. During the hell demo, the first imp the player kills drops 6 rockets. What?

Weapon wise, I'm glad to see that there is no reloading. The super shotgun looked good. But the plasma rifle seemed a bit weak, and the machine gun with a scope was an atrocity. Also, not a fan of the limited carry ammo because of the enemy drops. And the chainsaw had 6 "ammo." Not sure if it was a bug, but it didn't decrease with use, so I'm hopeful that it's use is not limited.

The enemy design is also hit or miss. The original mancubus looked like an obese man with hooved feet. It was an awesome design. The new mancubus looks like a random alien from outer space, not an abomination from hell. Revenant looked a little goofy, but overall it looks fine. I like the new hell knights, but I'm still not a fan of the new imps.

I'm surprised that the reaction was so positive at the Quakecon reveal. It was pretty disappointing personally.

Rewatching the Hell video, there are a lot of routes the player didn't take. Definitely not a single corridor, and actually pretty damn good-looking. It's just not that noticeable because the majority of the time is spent in the pit area at the bottom.

demo player was probably showing everything off, he aint gonna fly 100% showing a game off for the first time like this

The shotguns could've used a lot more oomph, in my opnion. Lacked a certain 'punch'. And mandatory cutscenes when killing with a chainsaw? Come oooon. Has to be just for the demo.

Still pretty excited about it though. Loving the explosions and environment graphics. And I'm sure the game will feel a lot faster with keyboard and mouse. And we'll also be able to just press 1-9 for our weapons - no need for that weapon wheel!

I don't get what's so hard in making Cacodemons RED and not brownish. Is it the lighting or what?
Seriously! The only enemy whose looks I care about and they never get it right. It's iconic. It's not that hard. Red with green and blue fireballs and blue blood. And don't make them explode and disintegrate when they die.

Yoshichan

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?

AI has improvement tremendously really. It is very difficult to see, and not many developers focus on it but if you know what to play and what to look for, you see it.
It isn't better at killing the player though. That is actually easy to achieve (play UT with most difficult bots...) but it is not fun, as a computer will beat a human player every single time, if allowed.
Modern AIs are, in the best examples, far more life-like than ever before.
(Emulating how humans play is probably incredibly difficult, kind of FPS-Turing-test...)

Otherwise, there are tons of small things that old shooters don't have. Consider something like ARMA3...

How does this chainsawing work gameplay wise, press B for awesome?

I don't really like the enemy design and exploding gore, it's over the top....bad, like a bloody Ratchet and Clank, with health popping and ammo popping up. Eh.

This isn't the game I was waiting for 11 years. Bethesda, was Fallout not enough for you? Is it necessary to kill both of my beloved franchises?

Wow! I'm surprised that this thread is filled with a lot of disappointment. Looked like Doom to me. Pretty happy with what I saw, will be there day one.

I don't how some people are saying it looks to slow. Looked fast enough, especially the portion in hell.

Call me cynical but this looks like Bethesda's second attempt to get a cut from paid mods. Why else would the game editor be so comprehensive?

Absolutely disgusted.

Gun design: Did the ppl in charge play alot of Advanced Warfare? All ugly plastic looking hunks of no fun. The shotgun looked fucking useless. Chainsaw was all gore animations. The plasma Rifle from the original Doom was super loud, the new plasma rifle I couldn't even hear. Super shotgun at least had some unf to it.

Enemy design: Why do they all look the same? All bald, grey and super tiny (except mr fatty Mancubus who actually looked normal sized). They also all seem to like to stand there and roar while Doomguy just fucks there shit. There was 0 color on any of those enemies beyond their nipples. I also hate how demons burst into health and ammo treats. Devs nowadays can't do health/ammo/enemy placement nowadays, and that was especially made apparent when Doomguy now is Ratchet/Clank magnetic.

Level design: Doom 3 redux. Boring corridors, all metal shitfests. Hell designwise looks like boring wasteland shit, but at least the gameplay looked a bit better. But there was no exploration, it was almost like Serious Sam/Painkiller where u went into a room, enemies spawned, kill them, move on. I was wondering if the first lvl was just a tech demo, but then they showed that map maker thing and it all looked the same.

One thing I don't like about the visuals is the muddy, low resolution look of the textures. All idTech5 games had it, I thought they were scrapping that shitty megatexture technology for idTech6.

The section where they are in hell looks A LOT better than the first section in the building. Hope it's more of that in the game.

I feel like DOOM as a franchise needs to just get this game out so it can eventually find its identify. To be honest I can see us getting something like the leaked Doom reboot trailer after this game in an attempt to further find what a modern Doom should look like and play like (I'm sure we have differing ideas). We'll see how this ends up but any way you slice it, revitalizing a legendary series like this will be painful. I have no doubt DOOM will at the very least be solid if not a bit uninspired at times. But it may lead to the kind of rediscovery we got with Wolfenstein TNO.
